I was going to PM you to ask if you were being sarcastic about the relevance of my post but you don't have plat, so...

Some time back I owned a record store for several years. I closed the place almost a decade ago, but I can still remember seeing people come in with their friends and buy the music that didn't embarrass them around their friends, then come back solo and buy the stuff that their friends hated. More than one kid whose friends thought he solely loved the most hardcore of hardcore was secretly listening to super poppy radio rock. One obviously closeted gay kid worried me with how frequently he'd do that; I remember thinking that you can only keep so many secrets.

To contribute something I love that most people who know me wouldn't expect:

I've always loved mashups, the cornier the better. I used to put entire Super Mash Bros and Titus Jones albums on a playlist for parties and never heard any complaints.

I was, although I apologize for sounding overly bitter. You honestly nailed it with that anecdote however. My girlfriend and I love each other to death but she's a hardcore music lover and although there's music I can't listen to without wanting to tear my ears out, I'm definitely more of a "I don't know music but I know what I like" kind of guy. On the flip side though, she still has nostalgia for old N'sync and Backstreet Boys and Britney. The point is that we all have songs we love even though we wouldn't even necessarily share with our closest (as I think of the sour look she gave me upon playing another Sonic mashup), and this is the place to share that.

No worries friend, we cool.

My most recent "guilty pleasure" has been the Hamilton soundtrack. While seeing people lose their minds over a Broadway show is a bit much, I can't deny that the show as a whole is well written. Particularly the song "it's quiet uptown", which comes as Alexander Hamilton and his wife, somewhat estranged because of him publicly admitting to repeatedly cheating on her, are reconciling in the wake of their son being killed in a duel - a duel he was fighting to protect his father's honor.

I like the three Limp Bizkit albums that started with the one with "Nookie" and I don't really understand the hate Fred Durst gets. There is a ton of it so maybe there is a reason, but I missed it.

Or maybe the majority of people are idiots like people always say. I don't know. Either/or.

He brought rap-rock into the mainstream. I'm sure he's a perfectly friendly guy, but I feel like I'm ethically obligated to call him a poo poo if I see him on the street.

Is that bad? Rock has to change somewhat, or it gets stale. The main reason to dislike rap is, at least for me, that I prefer actual musicians. I appreciate the beats and tunes they can make with their computers and drum machines, but I prefer people with talent on instruments, playing together to put together a good tune. LB had the best of both.

Not that I really care about defending LB or FD. Just having a conversation, here.

but not today
Last night I was listening to my regular Saturday New Wave Eurotrash block which, for some reason, included a long set of Hall & Oates — not even deep cuts, just the usual hits — and I found myself nodding along, thinking "hey, this stuff actually isn't too bad" and now I don't know what anything means anymore.
