Civ 3 was objectively the worst game so far but the retarded smashing giant stacks combat system they used was reasonably well refined into what they used for 4 which loving ruled so I'll allow it

yeah to be honest I was always a pretty casual player so I don't know how the more advanced features hold up but I know I already like it more than civ 5 and I liked civ 5

My main question is whether or not the AI is any better at combat this time around because if it's not then the whole enterprise was pointless and they may as well have let the series lie fallow.

Classic civ is good
Civ2 is real good too
Civ 3 is garbage, civ5 is ok and has a lot of good ideas but lacks something.

I liked civ 3 and I think TNG is the best star trek. These newer civ games are too hard to get into unless its a genre you play on a regular basis.

The AI is never going to get good at combat. It never has been, not once, throughout the entire series, and it never will. Somehow the game is still good, though

I don't mean that it has to be "good" in a non-relative sense, just not totally embarrassing. It wasn't "good" in Civ4 but it was good enough that you couldn't defeat an AI force 3x your strength just on the back of it's sheer stupidity like in Civ5. You can't tell me there wasn't a big difference downward in AI combat competency between Civ4 and Civ5.

It's not expected to be as good as player, that's why we have difficulty settings. But it needs to at least have a baseline competency that prevents a player from just going full WONDER BUILD mode with nothing but three Ancient units in the Renaissance era and feeling safe about it.

Ah, well, they have made a lot of improvements, from what I understand. I'd be more worried about them being unable to handle the micromanagement of cities now that it's more complicated than handling the military. They all have hidden "objectives" now, which, once you figure out, you can probably exploit. Too early to tell, but we'll see.

What are you even talking about? Civ 4 was good because it was essentially a pretty reskin of 90% of what Civ 3 did right. And 3 still had one of the best o.g. aesthetics after Master of Orion and Alpha Centauri

I liked Civ 5 the most, but I spent like a billion years playing that Fall From Heaven II Civ 4 mod, and really haven't noticed anything halfway similar in Civ 5. So I guess I agree, yeah.

You should play hearts of iron 4. I couldn't get the united stated to flip communist if i played as the united states, but it's trivial if you start as canada, flip it communist, and start broadcasting propaganda to the US.

I started in the 30s and this was my pet project for most of what was historically WW2. I flipped the US communist in late 1945 as we were both invading the nazis because i figured i should get around to invading france because the AI wasn't doing too well. By the time hitler died the United States Of America was the Communist States Of America & it was really loving funny for a bit.

Civ is very very easy to get into, every release other than like civ 1 and 2 has pretty good in-game tutorials/tips the whole way through to help you out.

I haven't much of or played 6 but I'm guessing it will be the same.

I haven't bought Civ 6 yet because the vanilla always sucks.

That said, the correct order of Civ games are:

1) Civ 2
2) Civ 4
3) Civ
4) Civ 5
5) Civ 3

CtP's civic works thing was pretty neat for one thing.

Call To Power was my introduction to the series. I bought smac soon after for $5 at ealmart and it was a good purchase. CtP was fun in its time and the mechanics were simplified enough that 10 year old me was willing to sit down and learn iti like that it had a z layer and future epochs
