ASMR is a vestigial grooming response. It's what you would have been feeling hundreds of thousands of years ago when one of your fellow primates was grooming you. It feels good because it was nature's way of getting you to sit still for long periods of time while someone else pulled all the lice and ticks and twigs and crap out of your fur. When humans lost their fur, the grooming response atrophied, to the point where most people don't have it at all, and those who do are having it triggered accidentally by things which are somewhat like grooming.
