I found SA through GameSpy Arcade, which iirc Lowtax worked for before SA. imo SA has never been better than it is atm. It is a different community, but it has largely changed for the better, and I enjoyed it to begin with.

I honestly don't remember. I think it was a chess related joke or something, because I was really into chess when I was a kid.
