^^ related: The human digestive tract was not designed to eat half a packet of old dried apricots from the back of the pantry in one go. Unrelated: I know the floral taxonomy of a few small scattered patches of desert better than anyone else on the planet. That's not really basic poo poo, but being proud of that is basic bitch poo poo so it counts.

They're made of chitin, not keratin, and aren't produced by special hair follicles, and instead, like all parts of the exoskeleton are produced during a moult in a nasty gooey form that hardens after shaping. They don't fall out after a set amount of time or growth, they don't continue to grow after being made. They really don't have much in common with hair at all. Your hair has more in common with a Rhino's horn than a fly's hair.

I evidently know what I can change when baking so as not to ruin it. I keep hearing baking is harder than cooking, but loving up a batch of muffins seems way harder than loving up a roast.

Just don't touch it. No matter how clean you are all human skin has mold spores on it, which are harmless to us but death to cheese. Any piece of cheese you touch will grow mold after a week or so. You need to pour just the right amount of grated cheese out of the bag without touching it, and you're good.

What if I touch it really quick, so the spores don't have a chance to jump onto the cheese?

I know a lot of the basics of forensic science, thanks to a teaching job. I even got myself into a huge forensic scientist conference and was surprised at how much of what I taught myself was correct. What I was not prepared for was one of the talks. I went to the wrong one and it was examples of what happens to a body after frozen, with lots of pictures. The real aftermath of a shotgun blast (then storing body in freezer) is pretty pretty bad. It messed with me for a few days.

Don't worry, most forensic science is on thin ice and basically magic thinking that people don't bother to challenge and just assume must be right. For basic stuff I understand, stuff like rainbows, why clouds are white and the sky is blue but red at sunset.
