Wanna know what else is getting worse? Our literal democracy! They're probably going to turn over Moore v. Harper when they meet again in October. quote:Issue: Whether a state’s judicial branch may nullify the regulations governing the “Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives ... prescribed ... by the Legislature thereof,” and replace them with regulations of the state courts’ own devising, based on vague state constitutional provisions purportedly vesting the state judiciary with power to prescribe whatever rules it deems appropriate to ensure a “fair” or “free” election. Here's a rundown from NPR. How the Supreme Court could radically reshape elections for president and Congress quote:In their appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, however, the Republican lawmakers argue that the U.S. Constitution's Elections Clause gives state legislatures the power to determine how congressional elections are conducted without any checks and balances from state constitutions or state courts. quote:The high court declined in March to weigh in on an emergency request for this case, but in a dissenting opinion, three of the court's conservatives – Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas – signaled they would likely side with the Republican lawmakers' embrace of this theory. quote:Vikram Amar, dean of the University of Illinois College of Law, notes that a "hyper-charged" version of the theory pointing to the Electors Clause of the U.S. Constitution served as the backdrop for the "fake electors" scheme that is a focus of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. quote:States with Republican-controlled legislatures could see it as an invitation to set new election rules that take power away from voters when picking electors for the Electoral College or to make state lawmakers, not courts, the judges in disputes after the election. quote:"It is really a grave danger to American democracy to say that state legislatures are free from state constitutions to do whatever they want," says Amar, who co-wrote an article for the Supreme Court Review at the University of Chicago about how the theory goes against an originalist understanding of the U.S. Constitution. "State constitutions are an important source of American democracy, limits and rights. And I think it would be terrible if the U.S. Supreme Court distorted federalism to reject that very important premise."

Almost everything is objectively better than it has ever been in the last 5000+ years of written history. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't fight to make things better but constantly crying about how everything is awful, bad and hosed is a waste of time and tears. Either do something or don't but enjoy the time you have on the planet either way if you can.

Either do something or don't but enjoy the time you have on the planet either way if you can. This is a flawed statement. Objectively better as a whole in human existence, sure, only in terms of less death. But better as an individual born into a certain family/city/ethnicity/religion etc. it all depends on where you are born with who, if you survive, what your status is, if you are female/male, etc. etc.. We can easily sit here and type out that the world is better. But if you are born into Yemen or some other terrible place right now, objectively you are _fucked_ Objectively if the population increases in the world and climate change continues to impact humans without mitigation of these issues, objectively we are hosed

I've had this conversation before with Mrs. Brooks Her (watching news for the first time in months) "I can't believe how bad it's getting. Has it ever been this awful?" Me (thinking about the really bad times in history) "Well, um..." Having said that, I expect it will get worse.
