Kay

Still doing his best to look nonchalant, Kay loosens his seatbelt and silently obeys the order, looking the dude straight in the eye. At least while he gets looked at, the cop is not investigating the stash instead.

"Sure, officer". He fidgets with his wallet for a while. "There you go. International passport, and this here..." he fiddles some more and produces a battered piece of paper from inside a inner wallet pocket "... is a copy of my student visa. I am a exchange law student at Brightdale University. Anything else you may need?"

I honestly don't know the kinda papers an international student needs to carry around in the USA, so hopefully I haven't written my way into a deportation lol

Part of the cash is in the wallet, yeah. Not all, he's not that stupid, but definitely enough for it to be noticeable - let's say he has like $200 there, enough bills to make it look stuffy? You wanna look the part, after all.

Kay can actually be somewhat civil when his rear end is on the line huh? I would find it funny if I weren't nervous as hell. I watch from the side mirror as Officer Kilgore inspects Kay's ID. I mull over what he said about "decayed line"... what did that mean, was it just some backwoods phrase or local lingo kinda thing? Kay thinks all his problems can be solved with money...I don't know if Two Face here will be interested or use that against us. Mac just listens and waits.

Was trying to save italics for just OOC text but italics just looks better than asterisks for internal thoughts, think it will be clear enough. Also you've been making it very clear Kilgore doesn't give a gently caress about proper police procedure, lol

yep, didn't think he'd pack it all in one place ;)

The Sheriff sorts through your documents for a bit before thumping the pile back into your chest.

Kay: you see him clock your cash.

you wanna know why i pulled your friend over? because this road is a 25, and your friend was going 45. twenty over, well, if she wasn't one of Wilma's i'd toss her rear end in jail for that kind of recklessness. now because she's one of Wilma's, i'm just going to give her a fine today.

further, because she's one of Wilma's, i've decided i'm not going to stomp the life outta you in front of your friends, despite your disrespect

He covers the distance between himself and Kay in a quick step and puts a hand on Kay's chest, not-so-gently shoving him back into the SUV. Kay, you fall awkwardly but manage to catch yourself on the frame.

The cop leaves your door open and walks back up to Mac's window.

He writes quickly before snapping off a carbon and handing it over.

ms. harris, your fine is four hundred fifty. you seem to have rich friends, so i expect you won't have any trouble paying it. you can pay at the station. i want it paid before you leave lodestone, and don't think i won't know if you try to dodge it.

"Okay, will do." I take the ticket from his outstretched hand, the "thanks" wavering on the tip of my tongue wanting to escape but keeping it contained. I'm not thanking him for poo poo...$450?!?

Knowing I should just not say anything further, the words blurt out before I can swallow them. "What did you mean by decayed line? About my grandmother..." I trail off, unsure of why I'm even asking when I should just be taking the ticket and leaving the Phantom far behind us.

Casey is zombified in the front seat, absolute horror on his face as the cop strides away from the car. "gently caress that," he mumbles finally, once he regains the ability to speak. "Thanks, Kay, I'll repay you later. In booze or cash; take your pick."
He may not look the part, but he's got wealthy doctor parents and he can afford to pay his share of the fine that the cop probably spontaneously shitted out of his rear end as he thought of it. Good grief.

His hands are shaking visibly, and he has the strong urge to smoke and drink until he forgets that scarred face that will in all likelihood haunt his dreams tonight, but he is obedient enough to heed Mac's car rules and stay out of trouble. "Let's just go," he whispers to Mac, eyes glued to the road straight ahead as if it will somehow make their journey faster.

Despite Grace's best efforts to pacify the mood remains tense as Mac elects to crawl through town.

A sign greets you as you enter town: "LODESTONE POP. 9,750". There are no quippy mottos anywhere in sight. As you pull through, you can see the town itself is split into two parts. The western part is old, like old old. The road into town from the south sweeps through this area first, and you see the courthouse (LODESTONE HALL), the jail (with cruisers out front, it must double as the police station), the saloon (now converted into a microbrewery and distillery, "THE BARREL TAP") and finally what looks like a museum or something built right up against the side of the mountain. Everything looks like it is straight out of an old western.

Adjacent to the museum there is a sign anchored into the solid rock proclaiming

"PORTSHEAD SEAM EST 1871
THE RICHEST MINE IN NORTHERN COLORADO"

You continue on, passing a single manor house that caps the end of the main street that leads off toward the mine. It is large and ostentatious, with a variety of architectural trappings, and it looms high above the rest of the buildings nearby.

As you curve around and begin heading east, the town becomes more modern. You see a gas station, a small King Soopers grocery store, a bookstore along with other strip-mall-esque components, an outdoor equipment rental place, and eventually modern housing.

You all loosen up a bit on the outskirts of town to the east. The woods are beautiful, and as the road follows the spring the sunlight dances on the water. You pass a few cabins tucked up against the water, but after a while it's just woods.

Eventually you reach Wilma's cabin and all but Mac are surprised by how nice it is. It is large, as large as a suburban two-story. You all begin to unpack while Mac looks for the key.

Mac: your grandmother normally leaves the key under a fake rock in the small planter next to the door, but it's not there. You check the door, and finding it open, go in.

Your grandmother is home. You were expecting the cabin to be empty; in fact your grandmother explicitly told you it would be. Instead you hear her sashaying in the kitchen, singing with the ancient white radio she keeps next to the sink.

The rest of you are right behind Mac as she goes inside.

Getting down to business, Casey makes a beeline for the back of the SUV and rummages around for his belongings. Frank and Kay must've crammed their bags in last, and Casey opts to hoist their stuff out and onto the ground instead of making a fuss about his own luggage being blocked. Quickly, he heaves his backpack onto his shoulders and grabs his duffel bag, before hanging back as Mac proceeds inside. He wasn't expecting the cabin to be occupied, and he's sure Mac's grandma is probably nice, but he's not exactly keen on being the first to introduce himself, considering he's still a bit uneasy after their earlier encounter with Kilgore. Instead, he breathes in the fresh mountain air and starts to relax again as he takes in the charming surroundings.
