Also, https://vimeo.com/. Go through their "staff picks." It's very well curated. Then follow animators you like, and when they "heart" other animations it will show up on your feed. The main downfall of vimeo in is the search function.

I just finished studying in a 2D/3D animation program and I've been lurking this thread for a good while. I thought I'd post my final project that I worked on with 3 other students. I normally do 2D stuff so on this I did the storyboards, concept art and all the textures. We realized while doing this that our main animator was a total idiot as he started seriously working on the animation about 2 months before the date it was due, instead of 5 months before. I'm still pleased with it despite that!

Spooky cat. Nice.

So...the months up next week. How'd you guys do with that 11 second club thing?

I'm nearly done, I'll post my work in prog later today. Unfortunately I'm gonna be in Toronto next week away from my computer, so I won't be able to do as much polish as I wanted.

Edit: Here it is. I still need to clean curves, push the up and down motion on the old guy, and add more breakdowns to the girl in the foreground. Also work more on the lipsynch. Not sure how much of that I'll manage to get done before it's due.

That's a shame (not the dribble thing - that's good), was hoping to see what you guys were doing. Still, glad you got something out of it though.

Yeah you're definitely right on that. The leg movement is modeled on an elephant, but the timing is about twice the timing of an actual elephant walk. I was liking the idea of having him look a bit more speedy to reflect the shark bits but the slower pacing might suit it better, actually.

I haven't yet but keep meaning to. It's definitely at the top of my list along with loopdeloop of things I should be doing with my time after work.

mareep
Dec 26, 2009

Urgh yes. Loopdeloop, I always come up with some idea or another and then never have time to execute it. Case in point, I'm a bit unhappy with how this turned out but my evenings are all booked up and I just wanted to make sure I got it done actually in time for the Unwork deadline! I wanted to tweak his pace even more but I just knew I'd never get it done in time... the next time I do a quad walk cycle though, I have learned so much from this, so that's cool.

Goddamn it, I got the dates mixed up and planned to render out my 11 second entry today, not realizing today is June 1st.

Sigh.

Oh well. I'll post it here later asking for critique. I still want to use it in my demo reel if I can make it good enough.

^^^ yesss do it, I love seeing 11 seconds. I've always wanted to do one and never came close to completing it, it definitely is tough to pull off even without a lot of other things going on.

So here's this thing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcY8Tlx9qrc

I think it drags a bit but that seems to be a minority view from non-animator feedback. I also find it to be visually shallow, and while I have some ideas on how to fix that I needed to get it out the door.

My wife made the art and I handled it from there, this is our first collaboration and we have another one lined up with the same musician. It will be the same style so feedback would be great for improving the next one.

This is super charming and pleasant. I don't think it drags, it matches very well with the pace of the music. Any faster and it would be too frenetic IMO. Maybe the octopus could have used a little more eye movement. But overall, extremely attractive, organic and non-computery-looking. :3:

Thanks, that was a goal. Hopefully the next one will be better than "pretty good" :D

Now, something else for your auspicious judgement:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwQ7Zwn1lzo

Is the TV channel thing played-out? It's a solution making the hard cuts flow more than anything else.

At 0:53 I have that composite shot of logo animations, and it's a solution to none of those things deserving full screen real estate but still wanting to show that kind of motion graphics work. Industry wise I don't know how I should feel about that sequence. The elevator music gives it some context but maybe it should have a "live feed" news ticker on it or a public access logo?

I know I have to do it, but I hate looking at other peoples reels. I always feel like my material is sub-par. I get closer to "looking real" with every pass, but the goal post always seems to be half a field away.

Did I just use a sports analogy? poo poo.

Disclaimer: I am not in the industry, nor do I have much animation experience.

1. The work you show is so diverse that I'm not sure what you want to do more of. If the point of this reel is to get you hired, or get you freelance work, it seems pretty unfocused.

2. The scene at 1:00 with the guy in the warehouse is by far the lowest quality clip. It looks like a bad local TV commercial. The perspective is way off (the guy looks huge). It's jarring compared to everything else, I'd say drop it.

3. After watching it once, I could recall the evil snowmen/yeti, the underwater song, the TV logos, the swedish fish, the guy getting crushed (stood out as bad). I completely forgot that the puppet stop motion was in there. Not sure what that says. I also forgot about the software feature demo clip.

Overall not bad, but there are some big quality swings - the Swedish fish looked like a real commercial (is it?), the puppets look out of focus, poorly lit, and generally like an intro animation class project. Ending on the fire is pretty weak. Then again the yeti looks great. And the underwater jingle is well done too.

Funny story; I got more money from that gig that anything else I've done. It was an IFC pilot that had big names for voice acting/writing/direction, a considerable budget, and questionable execution. It went nowhere. The Swedish Fish thing, on the other hand, was a school thing (Snowman thing too).

As for the rest it's good to know what stuck and what didn't. Thanks.

The movements seem pretty good - though I think the might slow down in a few places after the big dude parry's (not the whoosh kick though, since I'm assuming its supposed to be in slow motion).

Also, I'm guessing you've been using pre-made rigs but have you ever given thought about trying to modify the little guy so he has something of a face?
People tend to get angry when they're in death combat. Though at this point it might be a bit late for that since I can't remember if you can put in a blend shape node if the guys already bound to a skeleton. Probably not since that locks the vertices in place.

Of course that might be counter productive if your just practicing movements.
