How convertible VWs were made: I was reminded of beetles since there's a beetle looking brand spanking new and polished parked next to my workplace.

So, some old family books have ended up in my possession. Among them, some family Bibles, one I believe from the late 1800s, but I would have to double check. It's in pretty poor condition and is falling apart though. However, one of the books is from 1916 called Library Of Health, by Frank Scholl. It is a list of diseases and how to prevent/cure them. I have not read its advice in full but I imagine a lot of it will kill you. As far as my googling has shown, this is a legit edition from 1916. There are later copyrights and editions from the 20s however this does not feature any of that I can see, only the 1916 copyright. From the start it lets you know you're getting 20 books in one volume, and as I can see the page count is over 1700. It features a lot of writing, and some drawn pictures of organs and such, but BOOK XIX is a written section concerning the art of Jiu-jitsu and using it to defend yourself. With pictures.

If you don't open a thread and give the Jiu Jitsu a proper scanning so people can photoshop then by god I will hunt you down.

We've got a Brother scan/fax/printer, I can see if it'll capture the pages. The book is old (obviously) but in pretty ok condition, but because it's so thick it's a bit hard to open haha.

I made a thread in GBS, I've scanned about half of the martial arts pages, gonna work on the rest tomorrow, plus some reading of the rest of the book to see what ol' Frankie has to say about other things. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?noseen=0&threadid=4059531 Also here's the rest of Frank's description of Jiu-Jitsu

Picture of miners working in Sulitjelma, a norwegian mining society also known "Lapland's Hell" because of the poor working conditions. It was also said that the the norwegain constitution did not apply there. In 1907 the miner's were forced to wear plate with numbers on. The reason given was that it was a security measure as it would show that all the miners were accounted for at the end of the day, but in reality it was a way of making sure that everyone showed up at work. The miners called them "slave tags" and refuse to wear them. It endend with all the miners meeting at a frozen lake, which was the only place that the mining company didn't own, to vote about weather or not to organize themselves. Those that wanted to organize should step to the left, those against should step to the right. Everyone took a step to the left and a swedish miner exclaimed that anyone that broke with the union should be drowned in melted lead.

This reminds me of the scene very early on in Game of Thrones, doesn't the guy who gets molten gold poured on him just have his skull cave in? I mean you'd die horribly and it'd hurt like hell, so that Swedish person was being metal as gently caress, but could anyone physically drown in a liquid as hot as that without something else killing them first?

Lead's melting point is much lower than gold's but it's still 327°C loving degrees, your hypothetical scab is dead before the metal gets to their lungs.

Not necessarily connected, but I was somehow reminded of those pictures of the Cologne Cathedral at the end of WWII, surrounded by ruins and rubble, itself only slightly damaged. If you've ever been to Cologne, you'll know that this cathedral is impressive even today, even slightly intimidating with its blackened exterior. It must have been outright eerie in 1945. A couple turn of the century views from the tower of Vor Frelser (Our Saviour) Church in Copenhagen. Click links for deep zoom. North-east https://kbhbilleder.dk/kbh-museum/65953 — the cupola of the Marble Church is visible in the distance, it began construction in 1749 but was abandoned by 1770 (without cupola). In 1874, construction resumed and was finished in 1894. The smaller house by the canal in the foreground was torn down before 1920, and the small houses on the other side of the canal were built around 1900. North https://kbhbilleder.dk/kbh-museum/65952 — the ruins of the second Christiansborg palace (burned in 1884) are visible mid left, behind the Bourse with its slim spiral tower (burned in 2024). The current/third Christiansborg began construction in 1906. The big tower behind to its left is part of City Hall, constructed 1892–1905. The cupola to the right is Magasin du Nord (contructed 1890s). And one looking south to Amager, from the 1860s: https://kbhbilleder.dk/kbh-museum/25853 — the canal is the old moat, still extant. The street beyond the bridge and toll house is Amagerbrogade. Carthag Tuek has a new favorite as of 15:55 on May 23, 2024 |
