My $1 Goodwill find of the day:

So as expected, the Goodwill vinyl selection was lacking, to say the least. The only exception is the the above 10" record. For me anyways, it stood out amongst the Linda Rondstadt and 1950s Christmas albums: it looked old as poo poo, was absolutely filthy (the above pics are AFTER I cleaned it, it probably could stand about 2 or 3 more trips through the Spin Clean) and felt really heavy in my hands. For a buck I figured I had little to lose.

It's actually... really, really good. No idea how old it is; my guess is somewhere between 1940 and 1945 (Edit: this would indicate ~1947). Muchachita sounds like it came straight off my Fallout soundtrack, while Los Timbales has a bit more Latin flair. It's also 78rpm shellac, my very first.

Probably not worth much more than the buck I paid for it (unsurprisingly, it's not listed on discogs), but for me at least, it's a neat little addition to the collection.

Shellac records are fun to look through as there are such a variety of group names. Out of the handful of records I have, my favorite artist name is Deacon Utley And The Smile A While Quartet which is, unsurprisingly, gospel. I also have an Arthur Godfrey one. On one side, he's accompanied by the Too Fat Trio, who had to be inspired by the Too Fat Polka, which Godfrey covered.

Yep, Discogs has few shellac records. I think all except perhaps two of the ones I cataloged were new additions.

The moog/korg/synth/idgaf in this soundtrack are unbelievable. The movie is complete utter poo poo but drat that soundtrack is amazing.

also got all my imports from redeye in. they sound amazing on my headphones listening setup. can't wait to slap them on my sound system and mixer. plus i really need to head down to the record stores in my area and start hunting for 90s/early 2000s electronic vinyls. I've found a couple that have been real peng sound with no entries on discogs and the only info i could find was a post from 2002 on a dead form asking where a random DJ could find said record. It's amazing how much music is lost in vinyl. I should probably rip those records and put them on youtube at least.

They are pretty neat, and I hit up a couple of random thrift stores today and saw pretty large piles of them that I never paid any notice to before. I even saw one 78 that was blue! I guess gimmick colors has always been a thing, even before the advent of vinyl.

I didn't pick up any more, because my wife would probably kill me if I started filling up our collection with random 70-year-old granny records, but I was really tempted of grabbing a pair of Ink Spots and Bing Crosby 78s I spied. Maybe I'll just keep them hidden away somewhere. :ninja:

Can you play shellac records on a "modern" turntable? Mine doesn't even have a 78 speed setting, so it's somewhat moot, but I always assumed you would need a different stylus or something.

Assuming the turntable can do 78rpm you should be able to play it fine. I believe it's even recommended to play them on modern equipment, because old-timey phonographs had heavier styluses that can wear out the grooves much more quickly.

To play 78s, you'll need some different equipment. As far as the turntable goes, if it can go to 78, you're fine. You will need a different stylus, since the stylus you have is designed to play on vinyl records, and you'll need something that's better suited for how 78s were cut. Finally, you might want to see if there are different equalizer settings. Basically, your phono-preamp is designed for the RIAA equalization curve, which will make the records not sound exact. But there's a bunch of different curves, and you may get good results by playing with your receiver's EQ settings.

I was able to play mine with a regular stylus... granted the sound quality was pretty poo poo, but I'm not sure how improved it would be with a different stylus. I don't have a very special setup as-is, and the turntable -- despite the ability to handle 78rpm -- is pretty low grade (I have a Numark in storage that I've been meaning to swap it out with, but it needs a new cartridge... and it doesn't do 78rpm).

Yes, you can play it with a regular stylus, but this video show-cases how different the sound can be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLVyePWXmYk

So, for the first play through, he used a regular stylus. And there's a lot more noise, there's less bass, and overall, things just sound worse. The second playthrough, there's still plenty of noise, but it sounds pretty good, and the noise isn't overwhelming the music like it's doing for the first play. So it's something to check out.

This burrito is delicious, but it is filling.
Essentially with a microgroove stylus you will ride in the bottom of the groove and just be dragging through poo poo the whole time. Dust, dirt, fragments of steel needle and record. A regular groove stylus is like night and day.

Some of the later 78s sound downright amazing with a regular stylus. Here's one I prepared earlier. This turntable is a really amazing performer on 78s.

You know, it's really impressive to hear this stuff and realize how fast and how good technology got. This stuff sounds great, and if it wasn't for some stylistic choices and the fact that it was in mono, it sounds just as good as something recorded today. It's like the stereo remix of Pet Sounds. You hear the detail on those tapes, and you realize that we had a lot of impressive technology for a long time.

I wish anything in my pile of 78s was half as awesome as that. My Panasonic setup from the early 1970s does have a setting for 78s, but almost everything I have is religious and almost always a single voice against perhaps two or three instruments. Gospel Boogie was pretty decent, though I expected better out of the Lawrence Welk. Bubbles in the Wine had one instrument sound like a low buzzing sound instead of whatever it was supposed to be. Of course, it doesn't help that all of the albums need to be cleaned.

Thanks for the 78 stylus comparisons, it definitely showcases the difference. In my case, I probably can't do much without getting a third turntable... like I said earlier while one of my current turntables can play 78 rpm speed, it's also really low grade and doesn't seem to have a way of replacing the stylus. What you see is what you get with it, which I didn't realize until after I purchased it.

I should've known better. I... got it at FYE. :shepicide:

I don't know what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is.
Here's my haul from a local record fair yesterday:

Miles Davis - "Sketches of Spain" (OG six-eye mono)
Shangri-Las - "Leader of the Pack" (OG on Red Bird)
Shangri-Las - "Golden Hits of..." (OG US)
Sonny Clark - "Cool Struttin'" (reissue)
Smiths - "The Queen Is Dead" (OG US)
Smiths - "Strangeways..." (OG US)
The Jam - "In the City" (OG US)
Dusty Springfield - "Dusty in Memphis" (OG US)
Modern Lovers - "Rock 'n' Roll with the Modern Lovers" (OG US)
Mothers of Invention - "Freak Out" (OG US stereo)
Big Black - "Atomizer" (OG on Homestead)

I already had six of these, but I bought them anyway because the prices were right. It all added up to a little over $100, which I considered to be a very solid deal.
