Pretty sure the French Republic was the first modern nation by a wide margin to declare everyone (with a dick) born in its territory, regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion, to be “a Frenchman” guaranteed all rights and duties of citizenship. That credo of universal frenchness is still pretty integral to french nationalism even when it’s applied in bigoted ways (why won’t they assimilate when we told them they can be french??) It’s more like american nationalism than to “you must be from here night unto twenty generations.” France is like the dumbest euro country to apply an ethnic standard to. There were more tolerant countries but they were tolerant in the sense of “we will not ethnically cleanse or forcibly convert you weird foreigners” whereas France pioneered the idea of a nationality transcending race entirely.

To my understanding, an ethno state isn't focused on nationality, but rather race and skin color. Wasn't the whole point of manifest destiny justifying that God made America for white men and that they should expand and seize it from indigenous inhabitants? A colony that then goes above and beyond to not only dominate the original indigenous people but to displace them into reserves so white people from all over the world can live on the newly "discovered" free land sounds very ethnostate to me. But I dunno, I'm not American so I might just have a flawed image of things.

And what made America different from all the other countries in the world which were basically formalized tribal holdings. E: And manifest destiny is poo poo, I'm not denying that, but iirc it was a post hoc justification for expansion in the 1820s+ when America wanted to flex its muscles as an industrial power, it wasn't part of the original brief

The whole lot of them were pretty loving reactionary by modern standards but unless you're talking about one specific person* then you can't really define what "revolutionaries" especially in this period thought their new system should be. You can definitely find exceptions who still sound progressive for today. *for example Thomas Jefferson did a lot of public handwringing about slavery while happily being a slaving rapist monster. Toussaint Louverture was an anti-slavery firebrand who immediately promulgated laws tying newly-freed people to work their plantations and maintain sugar quotas as "free men." Simon Bolivar preached pan-americanism and abolished slavery and the racial caste system but never took anyone but white criollo aristocrats into his inner circle or army command.. We can take the good ideas about their revolutions without having to do exactly what these assholes thought.
