I think the real problem was that there were perfectly good arguments against augmentation. There was the addiction to the anti-rejection drugs, the fact that CEOs literally owned parts of their workers' bodies, all that cyberpunk poo poo. But nobody actually champions that cause in a prominent way - instead we're meant to see something remotely sympathetic in 'But you aren't really human, contact lenses and pacemakers steal your soul, it's purer to poo poo in the woods' etc.
