that's what i heard, which probably is the result of it not actually being by the original Postal developer but HyperStrange (Blood West, Elderborn) instead

Seeing this post reminds me that Alpha Protocol, which is not an early FPS game but is loving cool, got a rerelease at GOG this week including the full soundtrack!

I think that’s the most obvious “haha what is this poo poo, DAD?!” cut off point. Halo is a very obvious Dad game as well but I think 2001-2007 falls into a weird “just an old shooter” limbo between boomer games and COD4.

I picked up a CRT a couple of weeks ago. My son saw me playing UT99 on it and looked at me like I’d just waltzed in from 1734. Just a look of total disgust.

I played the demo and it was a LITTLE better but not enough to sway haters of the first one.

I liked the first one even though it was flawed so I’ll play the second one too. The big change in 2 is adding REGULAR SAVING, thank gently caress. No more physical save points like a final fantasy game. Now they need to not go overboard on too many samey levels in the campaign.

I don't need nor really want Crusader turned into an FPS. Like I guess if that's what it takes to bring it back, fine, but the essence of those games is shooting up pixelated isometric 80s office decor.

Edit: Upsetting that the first developer that springs to mind that would be up to the task is a pair of shitfuck nazis.

They brought the explicitly nazi brother right back onto development after keeping their heads down for six months. Which according to the math means you have two nazis.

crusader was an origin game that saw you playing a boba-fett knockoff who isometrically murdered a ton of corporate mooks in an 80s vision of the future with an absolutely hilarious amount of destructible poo poo

it would rule as an fps but correctly an isometric game would be cooler

the closest thing to that game made recently was the EA strike-series knockoff Brigador, which despite being a espousing a fairly pat socialist bent was made by a company primarily comprised of two brothers, one who was found making a long list of fairly insane anti-sjw/anti-woke/nazi missives who *somehow* realized the folly of his viewpoint a week after last trashing a transgender person and six months later appears to have been fully rehabilitated

I believe the next version of GZDoom adds functionality for isometric, orthographic cameras, providing the tools for aspiring indie devs to rip off an entirely different game you played when you were 12 mine a whole new genre for inspiration. Hopefully without also imitating the controls schemes of that genre.

this has reminded me that at some point I gotta see whether there’s a way to inject map data dynamically into gzdoom or eternity or whatever, because boy I really want to do a teleglitch-in-doom mod

More than a decade later and it still holds the procedural game, action division title

Yea, teleglitch is so good, real lightning in a bottle. One interesting thing about teleglitch is how it predates the 'everything must be a roguelike' mentality, which means once you've completed the game a few times you realize you've seen all it has to offer, as while the RNG was cunningly shuffling things around in the first few playthroughs, the item placement meanwhile was very meticulously curated and didn't have much variation. Some cheap knockoffs have since tried to remedy that, but where totally forgettable.

What's on your mind, Axa?
Do you have any advice for Teleglitch? I keep on trying but I have never been able to make it to level 5 (or whatever one it is that lets you start past the first level). I've gotten close before but getting to level 4 I get ripped apart by enemies basically immediately upon stepping out of the teleportal room, so I must be doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what.

It's been a very long time, but I'll try:

-First few levels are survival horror. Optimally, learn to use your knife on everything.
-I think the first guy with a gun shows up around level 2 or 3? Once he does, the tension is more about having a good gun drawn as you round every corner. Shooting first is imperative, you really don't have the resources to take many hits. You can swap back to the knife or lovely guns once you know that they're melee enemies.
-The nailgun is personal preference, I learnt to skip it and save that first tube to get a quicker SMG from the starting pistol. Means more knifing, but also means I'm better at gunning down the armed enemies asap. Other tubes can be used for the power legs (?) thingie.
-I used the nails for nailbombs instead. Honestly they're a little dangerous so I don't use many and end up with surplus nails, which is fine.
-I think sometime around where you are is when you'll find patrols of multiple armed dudes, which is why its important to have shifted your mentality from survival-horror-knifing to shoot-at-all-movment. They can kill you fast.
-When really dangerous stuff shows, give zero fucks about being efficient and hose that motherfucker down with the biggest gun you have. You'll know when you see them.

Its mostly about being super efficient in the early levels to build a surplus of stuff, then not taking hits from the armed dudes, as surprise surprise guns hurt. The back half of the game shifts gears again, it's super tense and fun and I hope you get to see it!
