FEMA sent me an iPhone 12 to replace my agency issued iPhone XR, vaguely wondering if I’ll get a 14 in another year or something. Maybe the budget version of the 14 if one exists by that point.

XR was 2018, 12 is from 2020, i onboarded Q1 2021…

I already had to send back my original Dell laptop for another (worse, non touchscreen, larger, slower - but newer production) Dell laptop earlier this year..

e: I vaguely recall in a big component meeting maybe a year ago that getting iPads was a possibility. I really hope we don’t. Charging cord management is terrible.

My work phone is an iPhone 7 lmao

My last computer was a desktop with a spinning disc, but I complained at the start of lockdown when everyone was using VDI and it was slow and terrible, so they gave me a loaner laptop with an SSD and it was so much faster than either the desktop or the VDI connection it was incredible. I then got a refresh and a laptop a couple months later.

I don't have a work phone.

How do positions with promotion potential work? They’re not ladders - so what are the chances of stagnation at a certain gs level?

Not the other one, couldn't stand the other one. Nope nope nope. Here, enjoy this bird.
Do you mean the max GS level in an announcement? Usually it's automatic to that grade. Then you top out and do steps only.

Like I was hired at GS 7 with journeyman to GS 13. Then I had to apply for GS 14 and 15. When I hit 13, I kept getting steps until I got 14.

Got it thanks. The announcement’s “pay scale & grade” just has one GS level, and then a few lines below that it lists “Promotion Potential” with a grade that’s two higher.

From some googling, "Promotion Potential" and "Ladder" seem to be synonymous. It means eligible for non-competitive promotion after 1 year of good service where you're operating at the next level up

I think they're not quite synonymous in that a ladder position can be hired at any grade on the ladder while promotion potential means they're only hiring at the bottom grade.

FYI the promotion part is entirely dependent on the agency norms - a promotion is available without competition but almost always requires a process initiated by the supervisor of record to go through.

Thank you both that’s super helpful. Good to know it’s not guaranteed. I might ask around to see how the agency usually handles it.

I have what may be a dumb question for US Gov Goons in the thread.

I’m starting to look for jobs on USAjobs, and based on what I’ve read, tailoring the resume to the specific job posting requirements is key.

I see I can upload five documents/resumes to my profile. So, my question is after editing a resume for a job posting and adding it to your profile, do you remove non-conforming resumes from your profile? Or just keep ~5 different versions that are all searchable?

When you actually go to apply for a posting, the system will prompt you to choose which documents from your profile to submit to the agency (and you'll have the chance to upload new ones if needed). So if you've got a few different versions of your resume for different types of job postings, you can keep them all attached to your profile and only use the one you need.

In 13 years I have gotten exactly one unsolicited email based on my resumes being searchable.

It was for Space Force and, based on the wording, they did a mass email to everyone with “IT Specialist” listed on their resume.

I declined to respond.

Hey goons, I just received a tentative offer for GS-11 step 1. I'm not a current federal employee but will be buying back military time. Is it possible to negotiate a higher step or should I just be happy I got the offer. Thanks!

Very agency dependent, but if you have relevant experience to the job and have past experience at the same or higher salary (especially if it's in the same field or related), it sure doesn't hurt to make a case to the HR rep, the worst they can say is no.

If they won't do a step (very possible that since it's the end of the FFY they have a hard limit on that) you could try getting your past service time credited towards leave accumulation (to start at like 6 hours per pay period instead of 4).

You can negotiate steps at the risk of losing your EOD date.

We're facing a shutdown end of month. I'd normally say go for it, but not at the end of a fiscal year when who the gently caress knows when Congress will pass an actual budget.

Usually your experience is baked into your GS level. I've seen steps where someone had unique skills not covered in a specific GS grade, and we tried to pay match.

Edit: ^^ previous mil time is automatically added to your SCD for leave accurral. You have to buy it back to count for retirement. That's how I got my ten year certificate at my first office meeting.

Is it on a ladder? If you’re looking at a 12 promotion next year, the step isn’t hugely important. You need to be a step 5 before it would affect your GS-12 pay.

Yes, it would be less money in year one, but I’d it is an auto 12, I’d take it without pushing just to make sure you get in ASAP.

Moving from military to GS you have a strong argument for a higher step if you were an officer. O-3 is GS-12 equivalent and O-4 is GS-13 equivalent. I don't know what your service history is but if you were O-3 I would argue that they should bring you in at step 7 as that is equivalent to GS-12 step 1 and that is what you would be given if you transfered in from another agency as a GS12 step 1. Similar "pay retention" for a GS-13 would start you out at GS-11 step 10 if you moved to the lower grade and should apply to O-4.

If you were enlisted, I would try to use civilian salary to get an equivalent grade. Either way you need to present a logical numerical argument that they have assigned you the wrong step based on past experience. Qualitative or pleading requests aren't going to get far. You need to hand them the verbage to write in their forms if at all possible.

Those equivalencies are for housing allowances and some protocol and not directly correlated as a "rank" between officer and GS.

GS levels are based on education and specialized experience. Unless your military job was the specialized experience, it doesn't count.

I hadn't thought about that, need to be hired just in time to be told to work for free.

That depends a lot on exactly what your job is and what part of fedgov you're working for. The one we're looking at now is probably going to be more like 2013 than 2018 so I expect a lot more people will get sent.

I'm setting the over/under at 4 days (96 hours) for duration of this one. Place your bets.

With a shutdown, there is a very real risk of no new hiring until a full budget which could be March 2024. So if you can onboard this month, I'd go for it rather than haggle over a few thousand versus the very real possibility of a delayed or cancelled hiring.

Rakeris
Jul 20, 2014

Yeah I had not thought of the shutdown, definitely going to echo the other peeps who recommended onboarding ASAP. Even if it happens to be an agency that is not entirely funded by Congress, I don't think I would risk it. Like the agency I work for is 95% working capital but some peeps like HR are under appropriated funds.

HR is aware of the shutdown like everyone else, and if their boss gives them a mandate (and lets them cut corners) they can get it done quickly.

I had some very important leave related questions posed to me only a few weeks after my three months of paid parental leave was over.

IRS will be using money from its eighty sixty billion dollars of IRA money to keep it running and for payroll if a shutdown happens.

I imagine they'll tell us no overtime if it comes to that, and that extra cash is what keeps me going.

TheMadMilkman
Dec 10, 2007

I’m actually kind of bummed about that. I’m completely nonessential right now and have more than enough set aside to ride out a long shutdown.

I get that my situation isn’t the norm at all, but I’m really burned out this year and was looking forward to some time off.

If your agency doesn't work from appropriated funds then yeah you're potentially shielded from it entirely but who knows what the bossmasters are thinking. Check this thread from exactly 10 years ago to see what we thought about it then.

My EOD date's been locked in at October 8th (I'm transferring from another location in the same agency and doing it sooner wouldn't have worked out due to a detail I was on when I got the news), so... Well, here's hoping everything will work out! I have a ton of money saved up, but I have no idea how things will work out if it stretches on, I don't have that much admin leave banked. It is USCIS and fee funded, so I am anxiously hopeful.

My partner worked for an agency that was *mostly* shut down, except their group was among a few that was funded independently. Even though they kept working, they had a mandate from management not to "make waves" while everyone else was shut down, so they had a very chill shutdown even though they were still working.

I realize it is a low bar to cross but the onboarding system that prefills out a bunch of forms that you then can digitally sign is nice. I figured I was going to have to fill each one out and wet sign it all.
