I was panicking the moment polls had them neck and neck. Le Pen's poll ceiling only gets there on the first round.

Le Pen's polling is still significantly worse than Trump's nationally. But regardless, it's a straight vote, no electoral college - Clinton would've beat Trump under the French system.

Erdogan is a huge piece of poo poo and I think it's fair to say he's become an enemy of Europe at least as dangerous as Putin, maybe more. This is just appalling, the man is deliberately stoking religious hatred in the continent for propaganda purposes. He'd love if Turks started getting attacked, how is this any different (politically) from the IS attempts to blame the refugees for their attacks?

Interesting how Schulz deals in alternative facts to make his case by playing with the fears of the population - which is exactly what LePen, Trump and Farrage are doing.

I wonder if there are some studies or statistics about the number of people that really had to liquidate most of their assets because they lost their jobs and now have to rely on ALG II - probably not that many.

there's a shitload of communes in france, plus workers' struggle has been at every presidential election since the seventies, lots of communist officials still.

edit: apparently there are over 36 000 communes (cities, towns, villages, hamlets), plus all the people from the various assemblies who can give their signatures as well.

For perspective on that number, the US, normally king of decentralized governments, only has ~37,000 municipal governments and an additional ~3000 county governments. With nearly 5x the population and a ton more land.

The French love to make local governments.

You're joking right?

Putin would invade Europe if given the chance. Look at what happened in Ukraine and Crimea. That's just the tip of the iceberg of Putin's ambitions.

Erdogan, in contrast, cares only about himself. The only reason he's fanning the flames is to boost his own approval ratings.

Russia couldn't remotely handle absorbing Europe. Even the incursion in Ukraine is pretty limited, despite everyone more or less agreeing not to challenge it with external force. Maybe Russia would like to take a swipe at the Baltics, but even if the US disappeared tomorrow, Russia wouldn't be likely to invade Poland. Unless you think Russia would go nuclear and dare France or the UK to respond? They certainly don't have the conventional forces to take on a united Europe.
