Sorry, but the two parties that are in power don't feel like doing anything that would let other people muscle in on their scene.

Why it's almost as if electoral politics is a dead end and direct action and organization in other spheres is a better strategy for building grassroots power.

It's like what Howard Zinn said: "What matters most is not who is sitting in the White House, but "who is sitting in" -- and who is marching outside the White House, pushing for change.".

The times the biggest progressive reforms were won in the US were not times when we happened to elect the nicest presidents, but when people were regularly striking and marching in the streets. It's also worth considering that it was socialists and anarchists and so on who were leading those charges in those eras, not loving Democrats or anyone seeking office.

The same applies to Chavez - the Bolivarian Revolution (under either Maduro or Chavez) is of course not above criticism by any means, but the attacks seem to take a very disingenuous line that societal problems only arose as a result of socialism, not that there were deep problems with the economy, law and order and political corruption for decades before Chavez ever took power. That's without even going into the US's role in meddling in South American affairs for its own benefits.

Of course its frustrated to see leftists uncritically go to bat for left-wing regimes and turn a blind eye to abuses, but lets not pretend (like some people are keen to suggest) that Venezuelan politics began on the 6th December 1998 and that everything that occurred before can be conveniently forgotten.

1. If you are in power for almost two decades, eventually you own the problems, fairly or unfairly.

2. Politics didn't begin in 1998, but they didn't end there either. There's other leftist governments in South America since then, with varying degrees of success, applying varying types of politics, some more left-wing than others. For the most part, they've all fared better than Venezuela, and for the most part, they don't get anywhere near the same level of fascination among new leftists. If we are honest with ourselves, we can admit that a big part of that is just image. Chavismo is a great image: strident, aggressive leaders talking about a Bolivarian revolution. Other leftist governments: not anywhere near as much. To what extent does that image reflect reality?

3. I think it goes beyond 'frustrating'. I think most people who get into leftist thought do so because of leftist critique of mainstream politics/history. This critique often comes across as very principled, because there is not the sense that leftists are attached to some benefactor or clinging to something for ideological purposes, unlike the people they're criticizing. One of the most successful leftist critiques of western right-wingers is tying 'harmless' U.S. commentators to awful right-wing extremists in, say, South American countries, because they tacitly support or downplay their actions, or call them a necessity. If people on the left engage in the same arguments, but for 'their own', if they just come across as if they defend things because of how they're labelled, it undermines their appeal in a really fundamental way. Because you can't make things about supporting a team, people will just abandon you for a more successful team.

now this is an incredibly good point about how regardless of direct US involvement in either, we still very overtly support authoritarian right wing thugs while condemning left wing ones.

it's a much more dire situation yea but if the standard is 'we don't accept crony politics protecting a corrupt leader from justice' then we should at least be throwing some stupid and pointless sanctions on Temer's money too or whatever.

Brazil has far, far more deep connections with the US given the CIA Military coup and all. Heck, I recall the US making some sort of "We must respect the recent changes in the Brazilian Government" statement!

Yeah Brazil has been in the pockets of the US for years.

It really is hilarious how opposed the US is to any leftist government while talking about "funding moderate Al Qaeda" and poo poo like that. Truly an evil empire.

Revolutionary Russia by Orlando Figes is a great read and covers the macro history from 1891-1991. Strongly recommend.

Trotsky's History of the Russian Revolution is also very good. It lays out the pre revolution politics in great detail and is an analytical account of the events going forward that is also very decent prose. You don't have to be a Trotskyist to appreciate it, it's considered one of the definitive accounts of those events for a reason.

Edit: included a link to Haymarket Books, who is currently publishing it

One of the big reasons Greenwald has been a bit of a skeptic on the Russia story is because the Obama people (especially Ben Rhodes) openly accused the intercept of being part of a Russian plot when they published that Dilma had been wiretapped by the American government, and that people who had led the impeachment in Brazil already had a bunch of meeting with the US government scheduled for the week of the impeachment vote.
