I hope they rerelease Tokyo Olympiad, because it owns and I'd rather not buy movies by Leni Riefenstahl

Also, Riefenstahl's Olympia is her one film I will go to bat for as being truly great and enjoyable and one of the most vivid celebrations of the human body in film history. Still a Nazi, but that movie's good.

TrixRabbi posted:Tokyo Olympiad is in there. To be fair, she has spoken on the subject, and I recommend hearing what she has to say. What makes Nazism so scary is the sheer mundanity of the forces that gave them power. Humans, like you and me, supported Hitler and made a grave mistake we can never repay. But I think we should be careful, less we forget we too could make the same mistakes. It can't happen here, until it does. Also, it's not like the money will go to support Nazis, and it is a historical document.

Olympia was commissioned by the Olympics Committee, not the Nazis. She didn’t make anything for the Nazis after 1935.

She did make Tiefland, which is interesting and very watchable, but many of the extras in it were sent to the concentration camps after filming and most almost certainly died. However, she denied it for years. There's a reason the documentary about her is called "The Wonderful, Horrible Life."

Hulot's Holiday has the taffy scene, which is undoubtedly the funniest thing that's ever been in any movie ever.

Yeah House is a goddamn blast and is real fun to have during Halloween time. Repo Man is really fun too.

Jacques Tati's Playtime is really fun too. Not in a shock horror / comedy sense but in a timeless physical comedy way. Kind of like a more modern version of Charlie Chaplin films and characters (which are also super fun Criterions like Modern Times).

House, City Lights and Repo Man are probably the most fun ones I have. I gotta check out that Tati collection some time.

Also, the Lubitsch Musicals set (Eclipse) is great. The Love Parade is wonderful from start to finish. Lubitsch has so much fun with sound, even as far to cutting from a bedroom closing to cannons firing outside.

Scanners tho e: like, it's definitely not for the squeamish, but I've always thought of Scanners as a rad goofy 80s B-movie, and it honestly came as a bit of a surprise to me that it got a Criterion.
