My girlfriend works in Ambler, and she kept telling me there was a brewpub in Ambler but I had never seen it before. I'm going to have to go hit it up this weekend now! Usually when we're in town for dinner we go down to Saffron, I loves me some indian food.

You know dude, I've tried hard to discourage the dogpiles that happen when you post wrong opinions - something you do with disturbing regularity. This time you've jumped squarely into my pet sociocultural study zone, though, so if you don't mind I'm going to show you why your opinion is in this case both wrong and damaging. First, let's continue with your post.

quote:

I love food, but to me food is mainly a vessel for sustenance.
So what's a good meal to you? Oh, you mentioned that.

quote:

Call me unsophisticated but I'll take a burger medium rare with some blue cheese and light bbq sauce over an expensive platter that's done in 2 bites.
Meat, specifically beef. It's tasty, yeah, and a lot of "foodies" are rediscovering the hamburger lately. There's nothing wrong with liking them. However, you're conflating two phenomena in a way that, while not uniquely American, has become central to American food culture and therefore American food dysfunction.

quote:

I eat rather healthy and I'm not fat but I like my meals to fill me up and I just don't see that happening with places that tend to make "art" of their plates. I don't mean that condescendingly, forgive me if it came off that way to begin with, but I can't help but be upset when I order a piece of chicken marinaded in wine, stuffed with an aged mozzarella and surrounded by spinach that was cooked in the same wine (I forget which wine it was) and it's a 4-6 ounce piece of chicken and no more than $1 worth of spinach and they charge me $15. Yeah it tasted great, but now I'm still hungry.
This is psychological. You have been conditioned by American post-War consumerism and the food industry (not the restaurant industry, the processed food and fast-food industries) to regard smaller portions as inferior. You (and 90% of Americans) are broken, have been intentionally broken by a combination of post-War overcompensation and clever marketing to unquestioningly believe the larger portion is always better. Small portions (regardless of quality) mean less food, and less food means less prosperity.

This is why we, as a nation, are fat. We've been conditioned to ignore satiation, stuff ourselves silly, and not be satisfied with food that would be both more nourishing and less likely to make us fat. We pack tons of sugar and fat into stuff that doesn't need it - check out how much sugar is added to Prego some time if you want a shock. Then we're not satisfied unless we get a pound of spaghetti swimming in that overly-sugary poo poo with a half pound of Kraft "parmesan" nuggets for our $5.99. Because the biggest plate is always the best, showing we're successful enough to feed ourselves more than the other guy.

Midorka posted:

So how much did it cost for the two raviolis placed onto a platter by an art student? I'm sure it was good, but I'm not for paying for the presentation of something.
On some level you are. Would you like that burger if the cook came out, smacked a half pound of raw ground beef on your table, then threw the toppings all over the place? Maybe got some in your hair, dropped the ketchup in your drink? You wouldn't like that, would you? Whether food can be "art" is as debatable as what "art" is, but the fact is presentation matters regardless of what you're eating.

quote:

Call me unsophisticated
You're unsophisticated. You are so in a way that is more common among Americans than any other country, and it's killing us - not you specifically or me specifically, but us in aggregate. It's a bad attitude, and one we need to train ourselves out of.

Okay, I'll climb off my soapbox now. Everybody have a beer on me.

I think most people in this thread probably treat good food the way they treat good beer, as an opportunity to experience something. This thread isn't about how many Keystones you funnelled, so it shouldn't be that surprising that many of us would be willing to drop money on well-prepared, well-presented smaller portions that present us with interesting flavors, etc. Is it that different from paying $6 for a bottle of KBS (after standing in line, some of us), or buying tickets and driving for hours to go to a release day for a unicorn beer just to try out the stuff that other people bring? Beer geeks and foodies are after the same thing: they collect flavors and tastes.

Good question, and it's one I think about for threads with this much longevity. In general shorter threads are less intimidating. At this point, I'm becoming of the opinion that a new thread is necessary when the posters think it's a good idea, and occasionally if something dumb happens that needs a reset. Do you guys want to start a new thread? Maybe aim the OP more at the wiki now that it's up and running?

As to the previous title, it may reappear after I get over my amusement at the concept of foodies being in a food forum.

I would suggest refrigeration, and then recommend to your friends that they drink it slowly so they can see how the flavor changes as it warms up. At minimum serve it at "cellar temp" - 50 degrees F or somewhere thereabouts.

For actual content, I'm headed to Earth Bread & Brewery tonight. Why is that place not more prominent in the discussion here? Is it just because they only do growler fills and don't really distribute outside of their own bar? They make some great beer that deserves to be talked about.

Attended a bottle share this weekend:

-Game of Thrones Blonde
-Saison Rue
-Saison Brett (2011)
-Folklore
-A Saison Darkly
-Monk's Cafe
-Duchesse De Bourgogne
-Cuvee Freddy (2010)
-Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien (2007)
-Supplication
-Home Brew Quad
-Monk's Brew (Bourbon Barrel Edition)
-Responsibly
-Bigfoot ('11/'12/'13)
-Ola Dubh Special Reserve 12
-Home Brew Vanilla Bean Stout
-Home Brew Imperial Stout
-Speedway Stout
-Barrel-Aged Wake Up Dead
-Parabola (2012)

The Bon-Chien was definitely the highlight for most of us. Very rarely do you encounter a beer with that much depth. Interestingly, the Parabola still tasted incredibly hot.

Long story short, and thanks to ShaneB, Daisy Cutter is one of those beers that 100% lives up to the hype and deserves all the accolades it gets. I would keep an unreasonable amount of this on hand were it readily available. The only thing I would compare it to in the APA category is Alpine's Hoppy Birthday, brilliant in its own right, and when the time comes each beer deserves a taste test against the other, as I'm not sure which I'd take if I could only pick one.

Just got back from Earth Bread + Brewery. It's still as good as I remember from when I lived in the neighborhood. They only have four taps and one beer on cask but it's still totally worth the drive.

I started with Ziskey, described as a traditional polish smoked wheat beer. It definitely delivered. Hops, wood, wheat and smoke with a really nice subtle sweetness. The smoke was well balanced against the other flavors. One of the better smoked beers I've had.

I followed that up with Myrcene, an IPA. Ths was beyond my expectations. It was well balanced. Hoppy, herbal and crisp. Citrus pulp and pine with a nice sweetness. Totally drinkable. Not very bitter at all. Awesome beer.

My girlfriend ordered the highlight of the trip though. Ambree was their biere de garde and it was good drat delicious. Wood, molasses and malt. So smooth. So good.

I tried to get a growler of Ambree ($10 growler fills on Mondays!) but the keg kicked as they were filling me up. So I took Myrcene instead.

Worth the trip for Ambree. Seriously go get that beer if they have it again.

"Batman, Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne, Batman. Or have you met?"
So, I'm turning 21 on Thursday and am wondering if this thread has any suggestions on which beer I should try (that I haven't had already). So far I've had:

-Arrogant Bastard Ale
-Stone's IPA
-Stone's Ruination IPA
-Stone's (I think) Smoked Oaked Old Guardian
-Stone's Vertical Epic '12

-Dogfish Head 60, 90 min
-Dogfish Head Etruscia (the ancient beer, kind of wheaty with what seemed to be Belgian yeast)
-New Holland Dragon's Milk
-Big Muddy Galaxy IPA
-Sierra Nevada, Torpedo and Celebration
-Tripel Karmeliet
-Duvel
-Ommegang Three Philosophers
-Victory Hop Devil
-Chimay white label, Red label
-Southern tier Pumpking
-Leffe Blond Ale
-Le Chouffe (or whatever the spelling is) Christmas ale
-St. Bernardus Noel
-Wild Blue Lager (the only lager I've EVER liked)
-Golden Carouls noel (the only beer that's made me pause and go "What the hell am I drinking?")

I work in a liquor store in Central NJ so I have pretty decent access to anything on the east coast (with a discount) and so far the bottles of Lost Abbey Serpent Stout have been catching my eye. Anything you guys could suggest/recommend would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! :guinness:

Their beer is really good though. I actually really enjoyed their Watermelon Wit and Pumpkin beer/Oktoberfest mash up. I also went to Whistler Brewery which kind of sucked. Wasn't a big fan of Granville Island either. Have you been to the Alibi Room in Vancouver? That has gotta be one of my favorite beer bars ever.
