Your Gay Uncle posted:Is the Japanese remake of Unforgiven any good? If you've seen Unforgiven before and you want to watch it again, you might as well go with the Japanese version. It's pretty much the exact same story, just not quite as good. But it gets a bunch of extra points for the uniqueness of the setting. And it actually has spoken Ainu in it, which must be super rare.

Speaking of rarely recorded languages, anyone know if that Inuit movie "The Fast Runner" was any good?

I remember that the version I saw seemed to be transferred directly from the DV original and not from 35mm print, which gave it kind of a weird look.

Skwirl posted:I don't mind the Bale voice at all. It's a different interpretation from other performances, but I think it's an equally valid one. I don't mind the voice so much, but as someone else mentioned, it suffers the longer he has to put it on. In short bursts then it works fine, but the more he has to say or the more emotion he has to put into it then it falters.

What are some good sites for film analysis? Beyond just simple reviews. Criterion puts up their essays which are nice, but is obviously limited to their selection; in this case, I'm looking for Eyes Wide Shut, but I don't really know where to begin Looking for stuff that focuses on individual films, rather than trends or themes or whatever. Also a bonus question: is Goodbye to Language worth watching in 2D? (Personal opinions on the film itself aside.) It hits Netflix next month but I'm pretty skeptical about seeing it in not-3D, given it was filmed in and intended for that, iirc. Seems weird to watch something that goes specifically against the director's stated intention.

It got a standing ovation from a lot of people at the theatre I saw it in. Wasn't a festival screening or anything. I do not understand. Some of 3D rule breaking was cool.

it was my favorite film critic's #1 movie of 2014 but given the utter hostility i had for Alphaville i don't think i can take that mode of Godard, even though i loved Week-End.

Dr_Amazing posted:Seriously! I've never even heard of it. What's so bad about it? It's a really hard movie to describe because it has no plot and almost all the lines which make up the film are quotes from various famous writers seemingly chosen at random. One of the main problems with it is that it's frankly just kind of dull. A whole chunk of it is just camera phone footage of a dog walking around and people sat watching a Boris Barnet film on a TV. It's like Godard tried to make the film as uninteresting as he possibly could.

He had his powerhouse run in the 60s, and then decided he'd spend the rest of his career being the filmmaker version of Andy Kaufman.

So when do we get a biopic of Godard starring Jim Carrey? I am down for that.

I don't remember much of the movie besides this, (other than the slaughter of an obviously actual live pig) but I'm a fan of the insanely long shot of an endless traffic jam. It's like a Spike Jonze music video 30 years early but without music. And it must've taken a lot of work to set up, especially in those days.

The latter is a genuinely great and fun watch, the complete opposite of the stuff he's made in the last thirty years.

So, Hobo with a Shotgun is like my favorite movie of all time, and I was bummed to find out the official soundtrack was missing most of the film's great original score as well as some of the licensed tracks. I've been slowly making my own soundtrack, but I'm missing a track. So my question is: what is the name of the track that plays during the montage of people hunting down the homeless?

I think IMDB often has a good soundtrack listing as well. Sometimes I've found that searching playlists on Spotify/Google Music will often have ones where people have compiled the songs for easy listening if they're available.

I just watched Looper for the first time. At the end of the movie, when Joe has to decide whether to sacrifice himself to save the kid, why doesn't he just shoot off his own finger or even his hand? It seemed like such an obvious solution, the movie had even hinted at such a scenario earlier on with that Seth guy.

Yes. The story of First Contact is pretty self-contained, and any necessary backstory gets explained within the film.

I'm interested in catching up on the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. I've only seen Iron Man 1, Avengers 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy, and I enjoyed them all, even though Avengers had me confused sometimes with references back to earlier movies and characters I have no idea about. I'm interested in finding out more about Thor and Cpt America but I give zero of a gently caress about the Hulk. Can I skip his standalone movie and still follow everything? Is there any other movie worth skipping? edit: I also reeaaallly don't care about Agents of Shield.

I never saw Incredible Hulk and could follow everything fine. There's also literally no reason whatsoever to watch Agents of SHIELD. If you dig Peggy Carter in the first Captain America movie, her show is pretty decent, and is only 8 episodes, it also doesn't connect to the other tv show in any meaningful way.
