also, while i'm being a bitch about judge races, the republicans understand very well that political power in this state starts at the local level. here in denton county, the republicans were out at the polling places with signs for judge and justice of the peace races -- not cruz. the democrats were all in for beto and packed into craft breweries for watch parties tonight with their aspirations tied up in his messianic campaign. but the GOP is sharper and knows how power is exercised.

they'll vote for cruz but they're turning out to vote for the county judge. and they do that because they want to call the shots in their communities. it's as straightforward as that

edit: these results from collin county are wild too. we are rapidly nearing swing state turf

How he got elected isn't nearly as important as the fact that a little over half of the people who voted for him as an expression of their identity rather than as support for any policy position he may have espoused.

Well I'm glad we all learned the lesson that what we need to do is track towards the right in order to appeal to the only semi-racist republican winemom demographic. Truly the responsible pragmatic right wing adults in the room have won the day; Those who know things like UHC, drug decriminalization, and not spending $700bn a year to bomb poor brown people and/or overthrow their governments are just pie in the sky utopian ideals. Hopefully with this historic win for the neoliberal order we can finally reach across the aisle and work with our quasi-fascist republican brothers who go on national TV and scream that Mexicans are bringing back smallpox.

Ideally, Beto doesn't pull an Obama and dismantle his GOTV operation. This night is proof that Texas is pushing left and part of that is that his campaign worked their asses off getting people to the polls. I'm not certain what should be next for Beto the candidate but his campaign needs to become the new backbone for Texas Dems.

A friend asked me if I regretted canvasing for Kopser, given that he didn't win. I gave him an unequivocal no, I don't regret it. The fact that the race was as close as it was tells me I was right to volunteer for that one. I can also move forward with a clean conscience, that I did everything I could with my free time to advance better beliefs. Those of us with the luxury of free time really should make the most of it in election years.

I have no confidence in the TDP doing anything good in 2020, but picking up a bunch of seats in the state house and a couple state senate seats this cycle is a good sign. Democrats need more control in 2020 for redistricting, local control leads to national control. How can I get involved with the statewide party early?

This is a respectable reason to vote in times when we're building concentration camps out in the desert and legally non-personing transpeople. I mean, sure there's Nazis shooting up synagogues because Trump told them the immigrants were going to kill all white people, but Democratic enthusiasm CAN be slightly grating, you know?
