That guy who does the overdub youtube videos of Star Wars characters saying/singing weird poo poo did a version of the throne room scene from the end of A New Hope without music. It’s taking the piss obviously but it’s also very instructive of the way Williams’ score props up the movies. And the way they wrote the LOTR movies, they were right to do the same thing. Yeah, but I can remember points in Star Wars where there isn't music playing. Lotr just doesn't give you a break there. It leans on that from start to finish. The score is very good but it would land better imo if they actually gave it a rest once in a while.

Jackson does not use music at the beginning of battle scenes For example the famous fight with the cave troll in Moria The music doesn’t pick up until halfway though iirc

You know what bit of the soundtrack is really good? The bit where Bilbo gives the farewell speech and then disappears at the party and sneaks away while they’re all freaking out and then reappears laughing at how smart and funny he is. Absolutely perfectly conveyed through the music

Saruman in the movies is an evil wizard having the best time of his life. Like, you can't watch the Caradhras scene and not smile at how much fun Saruman is having doing evil poo poo. I also like little thing like Saurman clearly being shooked after talking to Sauron on the palantir.

Other it is more constant, notably the aragorn/eowyn scene. Yeah I haven't watched it in years so there might be more places where it lets a scene breathe than I remember. I just remember the last time I did watch feeling a but smothered by it after a while.

Every time they lift dialogue from the books we get a taste of what the movies (as good as they are) could have been. It's probably almost impossible for them to be improved upon in another iteration, though, despite that what we got is flawed, because some parts of them are so astoundingly good like the score. Everyone working on them seems to have made it a labor of love and threw themselves wholly into it, and even if they had some ideas I disagreed with I can't fault the ambition or effort.

Yep, we've done it to death and ive posted about it enough times that i could just repost them if need be, but this sums it up. most of the time the changes at least had logic and the intent was to make it more palatable or easier to communicate to audiences that have no idea what a hobbit is, and given this is pre-GOT, whose only other knowledge of fantasy was Willow and the lesser 80's trash.

I just read the main section of Lord of the Rings for the first time since high school. I was surprised to find that the long denouement was my favorite part. It’s just such a relief after seeing Frodo and Sam hopeless and struggling for so long. And I really like the way it shows the effects of war on people. Some go home greater, stronger, and more mature, and problems that would have seemed enormous before prove simple in comparison to the experience of the war. Some go home wiser and more tired but fundamentally the same. And some take wounds of war home that will never really heal. It’s good stuff!

People who think the movies have too much music: I feel like its important to know, do you actually like music? There are a lot of people who don't and think its just random noise I've heard. Like Jeff Bezos for example. Apparently he thinks its a waste of time and that's actually why Amazon was so late in selling it. Some people just don't Get music.

I also love Merry and Pippin's relationships to Denethor and Theoden more every time I read the books, especially contrasting the reasons they offer their service and the ceremonies with which it is accepted.

When you're done, watch 'Tolkien' the movie: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolkien_(film) It puts this stuff in perspective and I liked how it went into Tolkien's war experiences as well as how it effected the people around him. If they increase everything else, surely Rings of Power increase sexual potency? Do the Three extend how long you last in bed like they extend the beauty of forest realms? Does the One allow Sauron to control the lesser rings owners junk? Is Sauron’s control over the Nazgûl just the control a Viagra salesman has over nine very old men?

I also like little thing like Saurman clearly being shooked after talking to Sauron on the palantir. I appreciate an actor having fun with their role as much as anybody but Saruman is such a fascinating and tragic character in the books, especially if you read all of Tolkien's history. Saruman spent forever trying to stop Sauron but he rightly concluded it was impossible. There was no hope for Middle-earth besides a literal act of divine intervention. All of Saruman's knowledge and efforts really meant nothing. So he logically concluded if Sauron's power could not possibly be resisted, the only option was to seize that power for himself. He's fallen down the rabbit hole by the time of LOTR due to his own flaws and the Palantir but we still see some vestiges of the noble soul he once was and how he's torn between guilt, shame, and fear. Saruman vs Gandalf is possibly the best example of Tolkien's religiosity in the books. Saruman despaired of their weakness but Gandalf never faltered in his faith in God. From this angle, I find Saruman very relatable.
