Is my impression that Telegram is a favored online haven of American chuds, qmanoids and rightwing dipshits of various types correct? If so, why? Because it’s encrypted and doesn’t get moderated?

My datapoints are two. One is an old family friend of my wife’s who has come out as an angry right wing crank since the Trump years but doesn’t seem to watch TV, listen to hate radio that we know of etc. His wife says he doesn’t use social media but did discover he has a Telegram account. Also of note, as a realtor dealing in pretty expensive property in SoCal a major part of his clientele are Russians with a lot of money.

Second data point, I was just on a domestic flight, seat mate was a pleasant seeming older lady, a housewife from Wyoming, who showed me nice pics of her puppies, then spent the rest of the flight going over every single Q conspiracy belief with the poor Asian lady sitting on the other side of her. Military tribunals, clones, people long dead who have been replaced by imposters wearing masks of them, Trump being the secret king of the universe, the whole drat bit. Of course at the end she asks the Asian lady if she’s on Telegram.

Can someone explain this to me?

Kiwifarms is still around as a regular website you can go to and visit. I don't doubt some fled to Telegram to have a more private clubhouse, but while I've not bothered to check if they are less active than they once were, the original website is still around.

Had a nice dinner last night with the exception of the loud guy at the next table. Most of their conversations (six people at that table) were typical edge of hearing what was going on. Then, a guy in his 50s started going on about the "corrupt state department" and "corrupt government." He was loud enough not to ignore, sadly. Also came out with a lot of "Why don't you hear about this from the CNN, NBC, etc?" .... Because they verify stories before running them? And he naturally uttered the phrase, "I don't think I'm smarter than everyone else." A quick glance showed a super smug look on his face. Yeah, ya do, buddy.

One of the women at the table was from Brazil, and she had the most aghast expression when he talked. I apologize for my nation, Brazilian lady!

Telegram is used by a wide range of people; it's like trying to paint Discord similarly. Has it hosted alt-right fuckos? Both of them, absolutely. Does that make it a alt-right fucko hangout? Debatable.

A lot of people use Telegram because it's an instant messenger that happens to exist, and one that isn't tied to FB like Whatsapp is. It's a little easier to use than Signal. It has a working desktop and mobile client and works across platforms unlike, say, iMessage.

That said I don't think it's end-to-end encrypted outside of special features and I also don't think they do much moderation, but idk. It's not just for shitheads. I've never encountered one in my usage, though they absolutely do exist.

I'm having trouble processing just how off the deep end people on the Right are getting thanks to Fox News and the like. One of my coworkers is constantly going off with utterly crazy stuff and accusing me of being in an echo chamber for saying otherwise.

Stuff he says:

Republicans don't want to ban gay marriage, abortion, contraceptives, Muslim immigration, trans rights, and on and on.
Democrats are more worried about pronouns than the fact that the planet is on fire.
Systemic racism doesn't exist.
Democrats are too far left. Republicans haven't moved.
Democrats are violent and oppress Conservatives.

Sadly, this stuff is highly effective. Doesn't sound like there's much you can do with this particular guy.

FWIW, I use humor whenever possible and do the thing where simply use silence and let the person talk themselves into a corner. A lot of times, they're looking for a reaction or a confrontation and are kind of lost when they don't get it. Like those types that wear those edgy t-shirts about "IF YOU ARE OFFENDED BY THIS FLAG" or whatever.

They're basically immune to accusations of hypocrisy, so that's out. On occasion, I've poo poo a few people up or at least gotten them to stop short by reminding them that most people want the same things and we're not as divided as THEY want us to be.

I'll point out every once in a while that everyone wants: quality education, a living wage, clean air, safe food, a functioning infrastructure, affordable healthcare, world peace, respect, retirement, freedom, opportunity, free time, drinking water, safety and security, etc. When one looks at that, they can realize that we have more in common than not.

The word "They" can carry some water and do some heavy lifting on occasion as a talking point/buzz word because everyone knows who THEY are - or thinks they do. Everyone has a they. Problem is though that for a lot of people like your coworker, "they" = the Jews, the Muslims, the Gays, the blacks or anyone not like them. And then we start to have problems and poo poo gets ugly.

Sometimes I'll ask them what "The Gay Agenda" is, "who runs Antifa" or something like that and maybe ask them to explain what socialism is and which Democrats/States/Cities do that. The I'll segue into what they think of our socialist military, police and fire departments or something but it's usually a lost cause and the the best I can generally hope for is asking them enough poo poo to get them to shut the gently caress up and think while also demonstrating to them that, even as a liberal, I'm a human being that wants the same things that they do.

At least ultimately ot at their core.

Eh. A lot of the shittier democrats pay lipservice to social progress to avoid tackling other issues, but there's no reason they can't do both. With dems at least their attitudes towards LGBTQ people trends towards apathy or "how do I exploit for donations, votes, and most importantly: donations!"

That guy is lying to you dude, there is no way he believes the GOP isn't trying to ban abortion, that is impossible.

As for why he would do that, most likely because he doesn't want to admit his real reasons for voting Republican so rather than having to say "yeah their abortion stuff is bad, BUT x y and z are more important so I have to support them anyway" and defend that, he can just 'win' the conversation by insisting Republicans would never do that. The bills they're passing to ban it? Fake news. Videos of them saying they're banning it? Fake news. Fake news. Fake news.

I had one tell me the us border patrol had been ordered to help 100,000 immigrants sneak into the US every month, who were then put on secret airplanes and flown into major cities. A lot of immigrants are put on planes and flown to major cities, because they're being flown to stay with family members or people that they know who live in the US already. The RWM is just telling multiple lies, that these are undocumented immigrants, that the flights are being done in secret, or that the purpose of the flights is to overrun small towns to replace white people and commit crimes.

This is why I just don't engage with chuds and people brainwashed by them anymore. I can walk them through why their perspective makes no sense step by step, but because it challenges their worldview, even in the most amicable situation they'll say "we'll agree to disagree".

It's just better to save your breath and refuse to indulge them. I had to do it to my own mom. When she goes on her RWM-fueled rants I just go "mmm. Mmmhmm. I see" until she's done. There have been a few times where I've told her to knock it off because she's let herself become so deluded (I think the last time was the whole "Dr. Seuss/Potato Head" issues "eroding family values" or something and I could not stop myself from telling her how asinine that was). My dad is similar, but he's more receptive to counterpoints and other perspectives-- I can get him to fully agree with some of my socialist views if I just don't say they're socialist.

But when it comes to randos in the workplace/in public, it's always better to just not engage and save your patience for more important things than lost causes.

I mean if so many immigrants were flooding into the country, then the good pay and benefits from 'the trades' would implode overnight. Not to mention that the costs of landscaping, restaurant service, hotels, and home renovations would suddenly get really cheap as there would be enormous competition for labor.

Conservative arguments are often just intended to insult, invalidate, and mock their opponents vs pushing a genuine concept. That's why they are often nonsensical or contradictory. They want to make the left look petty, hypersensitive, naive, and simultaneously controlling, evil, and out to get them.

One of my chud coworkers is CONVINCED liberals hate that he is a happy freedom loving gun owning conservative that they're deliberately making crime go out of control and make him wear a face diaper to drag him down a peg. Right, but then that would get absurdly expensive (how do you ensure that that many people get split up roughly evenly around the country?), and the more people who you involve in anything like this, the harder it is to keep it secret.

It's the same issue with the voter fraud bullshit about bussing loads of immigrants from polling place to polling place in California. It gets super expensive, and the more you do it, the more likely it is that someone who is in on it or approached to be in on it blabs about the whole thing. And if you try to do it enough to get millions of extra votes, it's just not plausible for it to remain secret.

That logic doesn't always help, as there's a lot of magical thinking about how the "deep state" is supremely powerful and also incredibly weak, but it does convince some people who are still capable of thinking things through.

The US population could be growing by over one million immigrants per year and you'd absolutely not notice or care, because that would mean roughly, for every 300 people you see, there'd be one additional person. You wouldn't notice, and you couldn't notice, and it wouldn't make a single whit of difference to anyone.
Remember that uniformly distributing a million immigrants per year throughout the country was the revised claim after it was pointed out that you'd notice if they were all showing up in a few major cities
