One of my favorites in recent memory was "The Art of Atari". Tons of great old school 70's and 80's art, and a lot of insight by the artists on creating vivid artwork to represent games with 10 pixels in them. Pretty cheap right now too.

I’m into chapter two and it’s really good. I also now understand how hard it is to properly describe the game past “you walk around and talk to people” without spoiling the plot or half-describing what makes it so special. It’s covering a ton of different themes simultaneously.

The Simon games came out when I was in my teens so this was right up my alley. I was, and still is, a big fan of Red Dwarf so having Chris Barrie playing Simon made it even better.

Unfortunately, I was living in Germany when they were released and I could only get hold of Simon 2 in English. I managed to find a copy of Simon 1 after a while though.

They're decent adventure games in their own rights. Some of the humour really hasn't aged well though.

Just catching up with the thread - I'm also playing Hobs Barrow right now and it is good. Also I am incredibly happy that I can play my (purchased from steam!) copy on scummvm on the train. Appreciate the argument that devs don't want to be open to piracy but it's so good for this sort of thing.

Also the bit about Chris Barrie not remembering Simon brought to mind David Warner commenting that he had been asked a fair few times about his experiences of BG2, but it was really just a day's work among many that he never paid much mind to.

Beat Hob's Barrow this week. It was quite good and some animations were just great the story was unfortunately quite predictable from the beginning and the only question was if there would be a slightly happy ending, or if it would be full Lovecraft

Overall I'd put it in the middle tier of Wadjet Eye published games.

That's my feeling on it too, it was really well executed from a design standpoint and I thought it was a really solid P&C in general, but the story was just fine.

I think I played the first two like 4-5 years after they came out, and while I really liked them quite a bit, even at that time they felt a little slow/dated/obtuse compared to what else was coming out at the time. They're not bad, but they'd be hard to recommend today given how many great adventure games have come out even in just the last handful of years.

What is this kid's DEAL?!

I'm about halfway through The Rewinder, which I picked up when it was 50% off a few months back. I really like it!

Disclaimers:
1. The translation is a bit dry.
2. The puzzles are a little more hardcore than I was expecting. I found that keeping a web tab open and looking up what to do if I felt stuck made for a better experience.
3. It's gonna be confusing if you don't have at least a tenuous understanding of chinese fantasy tropes. Daoist wizardry, grudge-corrupted ghosts, and underworld bureaucracy abound.

Positives:
1. A really pretty pixel art game.
2. Cool spirits! They do a great job of evoking wonder and/or terror, depending on how Bad News the latest thing you've encountered is.
3. Feels like it was written with a lot of compassion. You're using your time travel magic to avert calamity and make people's lives better, which means digging into the details of who these villagers were/are. It's really nice seeing how the main character's actions keep improving things for everyone.

Hmm... I'm not sure if I'd directly compare it to Ghost Trick, but I think The Rewinder they both hit a couple of the same notes. A pretty good time, though I'm a little concerned about the sequel. Seems like they might be aiming for a genre shift with Rewinder 2.

I LP'd it a few years ago and spoke extensively about how the developers were forced into a 3D engine at their own expense and ended up bankrupting themselves getting the game released.

They had effectively completed a third game in 2D but no one was interested in publishing it so they had to go back to the drawing board to start all over again as well as learning new tools on the fly.

By the time the game was completed they were behind other 3D adventures of the time, but then their publisher went bankrupt and it went stagnant for over 2 years before the developers published it themselves. The fact that it was released at all is a miracle but it ruined the company.

It's not a terrible game as there are enjoyable moments in it. But it's not a particularly good game either. I had fun with it but there are a lot of issues.

It has been a fairly long time since I did a playthrough of Monkey Island, and I finished up with Return for the second time last night.

Tales I had only ever finished once or twice, close to release, so that was a nice refreshing bit to go through. As far as I can tell, GOG is the only outlet that has Earl Boen as LeChuck, but the cost is that the last two episodes are broken unless you delete some files from the installation directory for some reason.

I'd planned to run through Broken Sword but now I gotta wait for those remasters. Well, "gotta".

I only played this because it was part of a humble bundle with Victoria 3 on it, but it made me remember how much I enjoy adventure games. The last section of the game was a bit too Broken Sword-y for me, but I really liked the atmosphere. I feel like the predictability was part of the horror, you knew what was coming, and yet you still had to continue...

What was with the cats? Were they real? Were they Abrax? Why cats?

What's a good adventure game that involves exploring and finding creative uses for objects? That's always my favourite part, and I felt that was lacking in Hobb's Barrow, even if the story was good.

The best summary of Ripper I’ve seen came out today. He mostly talks about the inconsistent story, technical issues, and anticlimactic ending. I was a little surprised there were no complaints about the crystal bird puzzle at least.

Edit: The game came out in ‘96, a year before Burgess Meredith died. Grumpier Old Men came out in ‘95 and supposedly his Alzheimer’s had gotten pretty bad at that point so he had to be coached through it a lot. So making his scenes must have been…..interesting.

I don’t think there’s another FMV game that has anywhere close to the amount of acting talent they got for Ripper, and they do a pretty good job making it feel it’s a movie. But the rest of the game is a mess.

Honestly, I don't remember. It had good voice actors, but beyond that I don't really know.
It's pretty up there when it comes to the Telltale games but it's not Tales from the Borderlands. That game runs laps around anything else Telltale has created in style, characters, worldbuilding, humor and music.

(Like the original. The recent new one is apparebtly not that.)

Tales from the Borderlands might be the top of the mountain for Telltale, at least for their later cinematic stuff. I will always be partial to Sam & Max The Devils Playhouse which I still enjoy playing even though I worked on it, and personally rate it at the top of their point and clicks. But Borderlands takes the post-Walking Desd formula and actually has fun with it, both in that the content of the game is actually funny, and the formal structure is played with and subverted in fun and surprising ways across the season.

I’ve read that. I knew I’d read this delightful anecdote somewhere but couldn’t remember where.

quote:

Catherine Heald, then Catherine Winchester, whose company InterOptica, and the high profile shareholders it had attracted, was acquired by Take Two in 1994, became Take Two’s first president. She remembers the phones at the company’s 575 Broadway office ringing all day long. “They were always bill collectors,” she says. She tells me she will never forget sharing an elevator with an angry Grace Jones, who did voiceover work on an earlier Take Two game called Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller. Jones had come into the office to get paid and was leaving empty-handed. As the singer-actor rode the elevator down with Heald, she screamed, “gently caress you, Ryan!” over and over again.

That's the one that stands out to me. That's from page 461. It's such a lo-rez lovely picture and I don't remember Clementine ever looking like that. The PDF they sent me looks the exact same way. There are a bunch of other images in the book that looks compressed and blurry too. Like capturing the pixelated look of an old game is one thing, but turning a modern game into a pixelated mess takes talent.
