honestly, it seems to me that psychoanalytic-oriented psychotherapy (which is different from that classic notion of psychoanalysis of Freud sitting behind the patient while they lay on a couch) is a fundamentally different approach that can be very worthwhile, especially if you feel incapacity of establishing a connection with the professional (what psychoanalytic theory calls transference). It's an approach that starts from a fundamental dialectical principle - which is large part of why Marxism and psychoanalysis started to work with each other in the 50s - it recognizes an inherent legitimacy of the suffering presented by the patient regardless of what it is and is adamant about aiding the patient in relation to their own subjective responsibility, i.e. "poo poo sucks terribly; what do you want to do about it?"

this isn't like a provocation or a challenge, but rather about discovering at least a measure of truth (or Truth if you prefer) about themselves to become themselves, to realize (again at least to some degree) that the subject justifies itself, that there is no quintessential "explanation" for who you are and what you do. Funnily enough, this ties coincidentally too well with the purpose of Marxism-as-philosophy for individuals: to realize themselves as historical subjects independent of the countless factors of circumstance, to become people who can locate themselves in their time, place and conditions and are able to make history. This can be anything from helping your immediate loved ones and friends in their everyday affairs to incarnating into the next Lenin as a living red star into a new age of World Revolution. Or anything else!

(also if you are in the USA, because of this alliance between the two disciplines, psychoanalytic based approach has been villainized extensively in many different fields, with behaviorism getting deliberately promoted as a political act in opposition to it, with a large side offering of anticommunism to help. that also immensely helped to contribute with those opinions of "therapy is lib" etc)

It's pretty widely accepted by now, yes. There was even a small controversy a while back when the IDF was contemplating promoting a senior officer who admitted in an interview that he ordered soldiers to shell a house with Israeli hostages in it (the promotion was canceled in the end). It's an undeniable truth at this point that the IDF killed at least some Israelis that day, the only thing that's still in dispute is the scale on which it happened.

There are times where his political perspective limits the book. His family worked at the UN and I think he gives too much weight to individual political maneuvers. It becomes glaring when he goes on an extended denouncement of the PLO trying to mediate Iraq's invasion of Kuwait instead of opposing it. He doesn't go into any of the background or broader issues, just has an unexamined line that the Arab states wanted to preserve colonial borders, and notes the collapse of funding from the gulf monarchies afterwards.

Like anyone, just read it with an eye open to who he is and why he might focus so much on high level negotiations at the UN or between intelligence agencies. There's a wealth of good information there.

The court has ruled that there is a plausible case, they have stated concerns about all sorts of things. I understand that the enemy is a fascist death cult, but arguing against the facts already established by the court just seems like it will antagonize the court

On the topic of book recommendations, I got a lot out of Palestine and the Arab-Israeli Conflict: A History With Documents.

It's a textbook and it's ostensibly "neutral" (nothing really is but I do think it's an OK approximation). It's pretty boring in that the chapters more or less contextualize the documents, but it gives you a *ton* of original documents and that's where the real value lies.

I have a few friends who aren't ardent zionists or anything but generally viewed Israel as good/trustworthy/whatever and I've found that showing them the source documents (letters between British diplomats conspiring to gently caress over the Palestinians, Ben-Gurion's private notes where he admits that they never had any intention of allowing the Palestinians to have sovereignty, etc) is the most effective way to convince them that they've been mislead by US media. It's pretty hard for someone to maintain the position that (e.g.) "the Palestinians never took any of the great peace offers Israel proposed" when you're reading the loving notes by everyone involved acknowledging that the Israelis/US were never serious at all.

It's probably not great if you're looking for an account of what-it's-like-to-be-a-Palestinian but it's a great resource if you're trying to convince someone that their assumptions about Israel/Palestine are built upon a mountain of lies and deception.
