Hey have you guys heard this sludge metal band from India called Dirge? They're loving incredible. The lead singer was also in a hardcore band called Death by Fungi which sounded like straight up Richmond/Northern Virginia-type hardcore. My favorite song is La Malinche. The vocals absolutely blow me away.

Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. is also in repose.
That album is pretty good. I think I ran into because of a front page thing on Bandcamp, or some metal blog thing. They do some good sludgy doom (doomy sludge?). Looking forward to whatever they put out next.

Ran into these folks yesterday. They aren't doing anything really new, but I liked this EP. Their other EP is alright, but I prefer the heaviness of this one.
https://potionband.bandcamp.com/

And I ran into them because of this Two Minutes to Late Night cover of a Danzig song.

I havn't. I've been listening to a lot of Devil's Witches, Mephestofeles, Alastor, 1782, Blood Ceremony and Magnakammar. Almost anything that is outright satanic catches my ear but those bands seem to be the have a reverence for their pornographic, violent, psychedelic roots. it feels good to listen to music that sounds really dark. Eyehategod and Cough are also among my playlists.

Wormphlegm were a finnish band who played basically a type of funeral doom but they called their style 'torture doom': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FJa-B8UUS4
Mordor are a really unusual band that has more to do with black metal than doom ideologically but they played very slowly and just generally had an unusual lofi sound, not unlike the much more famous Thergothon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT2PbUbF1V0

New Elder has some great instrumental parts, but I feel like the vocals sound less and less suited to their music with each successive album.

I wasn't a fan of Nick's vocals on their self-titled. Then from Dead Roots up until Reflections it sounded like he was doing sort of an Ozzy thing. Which was fine, but it kind of didn't matter because there'd be like 1 minute of singing in a 15 minute song, especially on stuff like Lore. I like the synthy prog stuff on Omens, but for lack of a better term, Nick's vocal delivery sounds... "jowly" I guess?

If there's one gripe I have about Elder it's that they often save some of their best riffs for outros. They could have whole songs based around the riffs introduced in the last 1-2 minutes of songs like Lore, Sanctuary, or Halcyon, but they don't even start until like 10-12 minutes into the song and then they just fade out. Sometimes the songs even seems like they end before those riffs kick in, so it's like a teaser for a totally separate song they'll never actually write.

I mostly feel like Elder songs would work just as well as instrumentals.

I really wish they had constructed a full song around the climax riff of “III”, it’s so good.

Yeah that's a good way of putting it. When I saw them live I felt like a bunch of their songs were too long- like they came to a natural sounding ending, but then just kept going.

Pretty sure most Japanese bands don’t do any drugs either. Even all the crazy psych bands, it’s just so stigmatized there.

And yeah Sweden is also super weird about drugs, even weed. My family there acts like they’re in a paranoid after school special.

Once they move to nyc though, look out here comes the drug fueled chaos.

I just heard stories about Acid mothers temple or someone like that having never tripped and it blew my mind.

Like this interview with Kikagaku Moyo says, they got even trippier because they had to make up for it

quote:

Being a music genre deeply-associated with psychedelic drugs, it’s quite interesting that while there has been a big psychedelic music scene in Japan, there’s never really been a drug culture that would support this. What are your thoughts regarding this issue?

“Psychedelic music in Japan is not really connected with drugs, because as you said, there’s not much drug culture compared to the US or Europe. So I think when psychedelic rock came to Japan in 70s, people didn’t know. For us, without having drugs we could make more druggy music because if you don’t know, you could imagine, right? If you see psychedelic music or art, you’d be like, “How does it feel like if you take acid?” without actually experiencing it. So it’d become more extreme and more focused on sound, not more on the feeling. So I think that’s one characteristic of the Japanese psychedelic scene, if there is a scene. I think it could also happen anywhere. When you don’t know, you could make up something more extreme than the feeling itself.”

I got this Japanese dude tripping for the first time on dmt once and as wild as it is for anyone to take, he was so wildly thrilled about it afterwards, it was amazing to see :3:

I don't know their roots or anything, but if they manipulated the whole stoner imagery boilerplate like that, I gotta say it's a pretty cool move

Kind of like Type O Negative being a parody of the goth metal genre, with lots of seemingly sincere tunes sprinkled in so as to confuse the hell out of and/or mock everybody listening (disclaimer I love TON)
