HatfulOfHollow posted:The store was Roger Wilco in Deptford. They seriously need a beer manager. Organization was cray cray. Stop in sometime for a laugh. They have decent beer but wow, does it take some work to find things. I'm talking pulling bottles off of shelves to see what is behind them. Or moving cases to see what's sitting on the lower shelves. It's like a beer flea market. I guarantee you there are old as random bottles of Cantillon or old limited releases hiding in there. I just didn't have the energy to work through it all. Oh that place is an unorganized poo poo hole. The only good thing about it is that they order a poo poo ton of Firestone Walker and no one who shops there buys it. That was the store I regularly found 2011 Abacus, Parabola and XIV at when it was mid to late 2012. This years stock went quicker though. I do agree though it's like a flea market. Do they still have broken bottles at the end of their bomber rack? As soon as you enter into the beer section you go right to the bombers. Along the outside on the wall are Belgians and such, then the rack in the middle has American stuff and such. At the end of it, near the wall, I would always find broken bottles sitting on the shelf. That place really needs new management. I was given a Sam Smith's Organic Apricot ale and this is delicious. It is the apricot version of Duchess de Bourgogne. The tart is very slight and there's even a hint of vinegar on the finish.

From what I know, Mikkel has an entourage that follows him around and does most of the work for him, whereas he personally rarely touches the brewing equipment himself. His brother, Jeppe/Evil Twin, doesn't have the entourage but also doesn't do much brewing himself. They're both good marketers and recipe creators (Evil Twin moreso than Mikkeller, if you ask me), but I still dislike calling them "brewers" when they don't actually operate or work in the brewhouse. It's especially galling to me when the name of the brewery that actually brewed the beer is on the back of the bottle and smaller than the goddamn bottle deposit information.

The barrel gave it a nice coconut/vanilla flavor that's really similar to White Oak Jai Alai at the end. Didn't work for me or the three others I shared it with. I thought the floral and barrel conflicted too much.

Nothing particularly hard to find, but the prices were pretty good. Actually their prices on everything seemed pretty good. I noticed that Saison de Lente and Mischief were only $8.99, which is the cheapest I've ever seen any Bruery offerings. And the only reason I'm convinced that there are hidden treasures buried on those shelves was the sheer number of random one-offs I was finding when I started digging. deedee megadoodoo fucked around with this message at 20:27 on May 5, 2013 |

I was in Portland ME this weekend and hit up Allagash, Shipyard, and Sebago. I hadn't tried much of Allagash outside of their White, and I was really impressed with them. I also went to Novare Res and had some really nice Tripels. Does anyone have other Portland suggestions for the next time I go?

I honestly love aged WWS. It has huge port wine notes with cocoa and roasted malt backing. I have truly always loved this beer, no joke. I'm not trolling at all. I sincerely think that it's one of the best non-barrel aged Imperial Stouts I've ever had. I have 2 more 2010 and 2 more 2012 and I'm anxious to see how it ends up. I mean tastebuds and all and I know I'm usually the Dogfish apologetic in this thread, but this is the one beer I think they brew that is world class. Edit: Anyone in the area I'd gladly invite over to do a 2010/2012 tasting. Just make sure it's Saturday night or Sunday so I can drink a bit without worrying about getting up early. Opened a bomber of Mother Earth's Peach, out of their Windowpane series, at a Cinco de Mayo party last night. Tastes like a glass of homemade peach brandy, the chardonnay barrel comes through extremely strong. I wasn't the biggest fan, but a couple of my friends liked it. Also got to try a few beers Saturday from a brewery that's just opening up in Winston, Small Batch Brew Co. They had 3 on tap - amber, IPA and coffee stout. Nothing mind-blowing, but I think they have some talent. The coffee stout especially was interesting - they called it an espresso stout, and it lived up to the name. Extremely heavy coffee, to the point where it was almost like drinking an iced coffee. I think they could stand to let some more of the malt show through to balance it, but there were also a lot of people raving about it at the tasting, so maybe they hit their target.

I just saw a cellar list that showed 64 bottles of Cantillon ranging in vintage from present back to 2003. I wanted to be cordial but seriously all I could think was WTF? At this point you've crossed the line from cellaring to hoarding. These are the people who find something rare in a store and buy the whole shelf. It makes me sick. You're no longer a "beer advocate", you're just a beer snob with a lot of disposable income and a big cellar. Am I the only one who is put off by this type of thing? I mean, I buy stuff to cellar, but I don't go crazy. And my cellar is relatively small because I genuinely enjoy sharing bottles. I don't hesitate to pop an old or rare bottle to share whenever I have guests. Which is probably why I don't really have many old or rare bottles. They just don't last very long in my house. Hell, there are things that I buy that never even make it onto my cellar list because they go straight to the upstairs fridge for immediate consumption. Does this get to anyone else or is it just me? deedee megadoodoo fucked around with this message at 17:47 on May 6, 2013 |

I understand your sentiment and while my "cellar" is modest, about 2 cases or so of various beer, I can't say that I wouldn't have substantially more if I had more money. My cellar happened by accident and I know if I had more money to spend on booze then the cellar would grow even more accidentally.

It doesn't bother me, especially if he's just cellaring Cantillon - a type of beer that is well known to hold up for decades even. I don't think it's fair to assume that he just bought the whole shelf out, either. It does bother me when people hoard beer that is well-known to be over the hill yet they still refuse to drink it - King Henry (still drinking great, opened my last bottle a month ago, but Laffler stated last November that he thinks it's fallen off and you should drink it sooner rather than later), and Wooden Hell come to mind. It's actually a shitload easier to just order it from Belgium than try to find any of the regular lineup on a shelf. There are at least three different websites that I can think of off the top of my head that will ship you Cantillon. You won't get older vintages and some of the rarer/more desireable stuff (Fou Foune, Lou Pepe, etc.) is harder to come by, but you can get it.

However, about a quarter of the cellar was Cantillon. There was a lot of other rare stuff. I just don't understand how you get to that point without thinking "gee, I should drink some of this stuff"
