Honsu is by far the most interesting character in the series and read with Storm of Iron it makes for a compelling trilogy. The rest of the books are just standard bolter porn - the mighty Ultramarines versus $insert_xenos_here. Of these, I liked Courage and Honor the best because it has the Tau (which are pretty rare in 40K fiction). Honsou isn't from that series, doesn't count

Question about Pariah on a relatively major plot device appearing about...a third of the way in? How likely is it that the glass shard that's used on several occasions, a flect? I know flects appeared in the Ravenor book series (as opposed to Eisenhorn, if we choose to believe the theory that he's the Yellow King and therefore likely supplier of the glass shard along with all the other chaos going-ons), but it seems very similar.

So I finished Fear to Tread, is the main take away suppose to be that Horus essentially makes his own plans thus ruining the Ruinous Power's plans, which results him losing in the long run?

Yeah, my bad. When I first read it I thought Pyrolocutus mistook another important object for a glass shard (I don't recall if what he's talking about could be described as such, whereas the object I thought he spoke of possibly could). Finally dawned on me what he's referring to but I don't think they had that ability. Plausible though.

I'm about a quarter way through Path of the Renegade and I'm honestly not all that impressed. The Dark Eldar really don't seem all that 'alien'. So far it basically feels like a Malus Darkblade book, except in space and not as well-written.

I've finally finished Ian Watson's Space Marine and oh man, it really is great. His writing style does actually read like something a posh historian in the 40k world would compose. It has been recommended in the thread before, but I have to reiterate that all 40k fans should read it because it has: - Squats! Zoats! - Perhaps the only gay romance in all the BL books, complete with a love confession on a Tyranid Hive ship! - Lots of fluff on how batshit insane Space Marines are. Most newer GW books just treat them like honourable warriors who are a bit detached from reality. SM's Imperial Fists do behave like someone who has been brainwashed into killing cosmic horrors for their entire lives. Now to read Inquisition War (even though the reviews for it seem to be a bit more negative). quote:If you want a picture of the future, imagine a fist branded on a human bum - forever. I'd say that since the latest half of the HH series, there's been a push back into "dehumanizing" astartes (while keeping them relatable), though only ADB gets it very right.

Just finished Blood Reaver and it further reinforced my belief that ADB is the best author Black Library has. I enjoyed Soul Hunter more however because it just seemed to feel more epic and The part where Talos tells off Abaddon is one of my favorite scenes.

The SoB books are fine. Swallow does an acceptable job of writing the Sisters but it isn't spectacular like ADB's Black Templars or whatever.

Just finished Pariah in two days, sweet jesus how could anyone have anything negative to say about that book. I also picked up priests of mars by McNeil, The emperor's might (art book, lots of John Blanche and other early artists, depicting imperial architecture, and "agents of the imperium", rather poor); and the emperor's might (same again but much more marine/war focused, some wonderfully detailed glossy prints in it).

Finished the Iron Warriors Omnibus. It reads like an evolution of McNeill's writing, as he puts less Space Marine wankery and run-on sentences the farther you read in. I enjoyed them for the most part, but the whole thing reads like a side story. It's practically begging me to read Honsou's parts in the Ultramarines books to fill in the blanks. And man, M'kar is the sorriest punching bag in the fluff ever. I might buy The Siege of Castellax next.

I am so very, very happy that ADB is writing a Kharn Heresy book. I'm glad he's writing Chaos Marine stuff - he does a good job of keeping them monstrous but sympathetic.

ChrisAsmadi posted:I too just finished Pariah, and I wonder if Eisenhorn has THE Alpharius in his warband or just AN Alpharius. I highly doubt it's Alpharius. The Primarchs tend to stay away from current 40k fiction because goddamn they're overpowered in a small scale novel about sneaky people. Angron in Emperor's Gift is pretty much the only 'on-screen' Primarch in non-Heresy fluff, and I think it'll stay that way.

In addition to what the others said, the Horus Heresy novels are still a work in progress. We don't know if THE Alpharius survives the heresy or if Omegon replaces him. It's probably a legionnaire in Pariah just because of that unknown variable. That's still pretty badass though.

You may be surprised by how that develops in Void Stalker. Blood Reaver is an immensely fun book, and the whole part with the jacking a ship from the Red Corsairs was golden. I wasn't aware of a Kharn book by the same author. That sounds really interesting, especially since I use him a lot on Tabletop. Soon he'll get to chop loyalist Land Raiders apart in a more fleshed-out, context-rich manner!

Finished Angel Exterminatus a few days ago. It was okay, but it seemed like Mcneill was trying to do for the Iron Warriors what ADB has done for the Night Lords, and it kinda fell flat. When he goes back to explain their motivations for joining the heresy, it seems like the only real thing is resentment for not having been recognized in the same way that the Fists and Smurfs were. I haven't read Storm of Iron for years, but it seemed like a lot of this book was making callouts to characters from that one. All of the Emperor's Children stuff in it was as gently caress though. I found it far more amusing than I should have when they tried to Slaanesh-hotbox one of the Iron Warriors emissaries.
