There's actually an excellent reason to buy it, especially right now:

XL300 engine: 4.9 millions
LBX-10: 800k

CN-9D on sale: 5.3 millions, and it comes with Endo and Artemis already upgraded

Specifically sitting in its own robotic faeces. It's an avoid at all costs mech unless you want full handicap mode.

I guess the catapults are more relegated to pop-tarting and medium range combat huh?

drat, I'm going to try and make use of the sale catapults anyways, so I guess with the splatapult I'll have to hover near a scarier assault at all times, and with the K2 I'll go for a hill humper LPL sort of mech?

Looking over the Nova nerfs, I'm not too hung up on them. You are squishier now, but they didn't touch its firepower which for me is the main draw about the Nova for me.

And the jumpjets. I have a suspicion that I wouldn't warm up to the Stormcrow now that I'm so used to being able to jump over most obstacles.

Shenanigans!
This event has been very interesting. With all the people out there playing random mediums, I'm suddenly doing very well by comparison. It's been a lot of fun surviving matches and racking up a ton of kills but it's caused my pilot skill rank to increase rapidly. We've been talking in mumble about ways to tank your SPR on purpose. I found this article: link: http://forums.mwohack.com/forum_threads/2210509 and have been experimenting with new ways to suck during pub drops. I started doing this last night after some very frustrating games and had a lot of fun. It's interesting trying to sabotage your own team of pubs in ways that make you seem like you're just as bad as them instead of intentionally trying to stab them in the back. Bonus points if you can get people to try and offer you actual constructive criticism in chat.

Since it's based on your overall performance during the match, it's important to do nothing that helps you get xp or your team win. If you do God awful during a match and the pubbies still win, you don't take a big hit at all. Don't let them prevail.

You get points for things like doing damage to the enemy and destroying components. Don't do that. Miss as much as you like. You get points for protecting a light/medium/heavy/rear end. Stand well behind their already not advancing line. If you see a team mate trying to peek around a corner, go help out. Preferably when the team mate steps right in front of your shots. Sorry, bro. You get points for hitting R and giving satisfaction to anyone with an LRM. Bonus points if you're the first person to target them. Pop that R key right off your keyboard.

I've had a couple games now where I've managed to do more damage to team mates than they did to the enemy. Next time I get into the mood I might try playing a Locust and just NARCing my own team whenever they pick one of those open snow maps. Even after all that, I still can't tell if my SPR has dropped any. It's still right there threatening to go up a level. drat.

The astounding thing is, even in T2 people have not grasped "standing still is dying".
9/10 games the team moves to the front, balls up and gets shot to pieces by the actually advancing enemy.
Kinda proves pilot rating is just for giggles.

In no way do i see myself belonging in the top 40% of the game, yet here i am, and rising.

Pilot Rating isn't what people think it is and the only reason people tend to be better at higher pilot ranking is by virtue of playing long enough to get that ranking. It's a weirdly abstract and overcomplicated 'games played' counter.

4s are also faster on their 3 second cooldown, while 6s are on a 4s timer.
While theyre cooler, you shoot them more often, resulting in roughly the same problems with heat management. Mechlab will show heat efficiency as basically ignorable, but soon that bar will threaten to hit the top. Especially in brawls.

Means in 12 seconds you shoot your 4s 3 times and your 6s 2 times.
If we do some math-wank, lets assume you fit 4 launchers, thats 4x4x2x3= 96 damage from the srm4s vs. 6x4x2x2 = 96 from the srm6s.
Means after the 12 second mark of launching with no downtimes, the 4s pick up the lead in dealing sustained damage.
On top of that you can probably fit a 5th srm4 for the weight you saved by not taking 6s provided you have the ports and slots to do so.

If you expect to not fire as soon as they come off cooldown, 6s will deal more damage. If you can spam them to no end, srms will be superior after a short time.

Rule of thumb is
srm6 = higher alpha
srm4 = higher dps

Another point worth considering, srm4 doesnt spread as much as 6s, so less of your damage is "wasted" on locations you didnt actually want to shoot.
If youre going for CT, everything that lands on ST is just excess heat generation. Ive quite come to love the srm 4s while doing the scouting event in the Griffins.

I dont think your maths is right on DPS.

In 12 seconds you have 4 firings of CSRM4 and 3 Firings of CSRM6, they nicely sync up at the end so those two units of damage are exactly comporable.

Hence with 12 damage for SRM6 and 8 Damage for CSRM4 over that period of time, per launcher, the SRM6 does 36 damage for a DPS of 3 per launcher and the CSRM4 does 32 damage for a DPS of 2.67 per launcher (IS SRM4s being a damage of 8.6 and DPS of 2.87, IS SRM6 being a damage of 12.9 with a DPS of 3.23).

The SRM6 will allways do more raw DPS but the SRM4 gets other tradeoffs.

Ack youre right, i didnt consider the 1st shot to start off the timer.
The 6s does the dps is larger chunks, the 4s in smaller bits with less heat/weight/space.

The Atlas' price for being the Daddest of Dad's is that it really wants triple basics. You need to torso twist in an Atlas. Also while the D-DC is a great surprise/umbrella thanks to it's ECM it can still get focus fired down surprisingly quickly.

The 4SP is pretty tanky but still runs into the brawler problem, so I've also been having good luck with the 4P simply because 6 ML's do a surprising amount of work. The 4G is the premier 'AC20 on a sturdy chassis' that I had some frustration with until the event when everyone seems to have got dumb enough for me to really get some work out of it.

The 4J Hunchy is a trap though, it's set up to be an LRM platform, it can't do SRM's better than the 4sp.

And in general, Crabs are pretty solid. Moreso than any other IS medium at the moment.
