6 can definitely feel very open-ended and confusing wrt where you're supposed to be going, but in reality that's greatly mitigated by the overworld design limiting where you can actually go. There's usually only one, maybe two places you can go at any given time, and the answer of which you're supposed to go when there is two typically ends up being "both".

Dragon quest 11 is good as heck. I'm 30 hours in and just getting to lonalulu which I understand means I'm playing slow as hell. I just have so much fun running around the maps and checking out new areas before I'm supposed to and trying to forge new poo poo and fighting cool monsters to get cool new abilities and playing the loving casino that I've managed to take probably twice as long as a normal human being to reach this point. Usually I play games way faster than the average so it's kind of thrilling to me that for once I'm on the slow end of the spectrum!

I am really enjoying Dragon Quest Heroes now that they finally have quests and the grind is smartly handled, with enemies spawning at certain points I can linger around and nuke until I hit kill X enemy or gather hard to get ingredients. Wouldn't mind an AI that does more. Had to fight two Sabrecats by myself from killing the tree root or the mimic murdering everyone when that was happening.

DQXI is killing me. It took like 5 hours to have a full party, it takes years to grind a single level and I have no money. Even better, I'm suddenly forced to use the 5th character who I have 0 money for. I usually like traditional RPGs but this is so slow I'm losing all will to continue. Why do nearly all my spells suck? Why do melee attacks (with the best weapons available) do like 10 damage? Why do I need to hit like lvl 30 before I can do anything with skill points?

Dragon Quest games will always have an assortment of new equipment at each town, and you'll only be able to afford a few pieces at best. This is normal, and the game is balanced around that. Don't try to buy everything, and for the love of god, don't grind until you start running into metal slimes. Just advance the plot. Dying in battle doesn't result in lost progress, you just get booted to the last place you saved at, at the cost of half your money, but with all of your experience, levels, and items intact. It's a slap on the wrist, and you should take advantage of that to attempt the next dungeon instead of spending joyless hours grinding weaklings. e: skill point gain per level starts out pretty anemic, but it does eventually increase. Some characters start getting like 15 points per level U-DO Burger fucked around with this message at 19:16 on Mar 4, 2019 |

Also, it kinda sounds like the pace itself may be part of the problem for you. Have you played many DQ games? It's pretty common for them to be slower-paced, with a gentler power curve and more relaxed accumulation of characters, gear, and abilities than some other JRPGs. It's not really a good thing or a bad thing, it's just how they're made; some people love it, and others can't stand it.

Been thinking about just replaying DQ5 which is a shame since I've never gotten much into any of the other SNES/DS ones, they feel like more unfocused, less character-centric stories which for some reason is a real roadblock for me

Are there physical attacks in DQH that inflict instant death? I don't hear the casting noise and people suddenly drop dead.

Scalding Coffee posted:Are there physical attacks in DQH that inflict instant death? I don't hear the casting noise and people suddenly drop dead. If it's your party members they're probably getting crit by enemies or dogpiled and you didn't notice the half dozen hits in half a second that killed them, maybe? I don't recall enemies using Beat or Defeat.

It is pretty much instant kill. One from the Troll boss with Cosmic Chimerae, which was likely a crit since he hits so hard. Another from hopping statue, the Yggdrasil stage where they mention the Sylivasgar(whatever his name) appears, and two died seconds from each other from the lion boss. I try to bring Kiryl for the Kabuff. I guess crits from bosses do 150% of your health if it actually procs. edit: I think mimics are the ones who cast death spells and I unlocked an item that counters enemy crits. Something new to make for boss fights. Scalding Coffee fucked around with this message at 09:49 on Mar 5, 2019 |

Srice posted:Crafting is your best friend, especially early on when you can't afford everything. Always be crafting. Yeah, crafting is superb. Each character's starting weapon can be reforged with Pearls of Perfection, and at +3 have better stats than the next weapon or two above them, even if you reforge those to +3 as well. If you have Flame Slash on the MC and Half-Inch on Erik you can use the Itemized Kill pep power to potentially swipe rare drops from monsters, and you can check what monsters drop in the bestiary after you kill one of them (for example, you can steal Poison Moth Knives off of the Garuda birds that you encounter by the gateway). After the next time your party gets more people you get the ability to do some serious poo poo with two pep powers that basically eliminate the need to grind for XP ever (or just get loads of rare drops). Between crafting, theft and loot from chests and quests I almost never bought anything in the game until I felt like being a completionist.

My favorite thing about the beginning of DQ XI Act 3 is your precog self-insert loving knows the King is the big bad in disguise but that doesn't stop him from actively trying to end the world again, first by letting him finger the sword and second by getting hammered and going to sleep in big bad's castle. Jesus man, maybe fill your buddies in while schlepping through the first forest. "Look, this is Luminary privileged poo poo but King Carnitas is possessed by an evil wizard but he can be saved. Jasper's a gently caress, Hendrik is cool, but in the dark. If you see them,, conduct yourself accordingly." But nah, better to keep them in the dark for reasons. I did get a kick out of toying with Jasper and his subsequent befuddlement. I wish there was more of that.

Re: start of act three I loved how silly and surreal it was, like the part where you're way stronger than the rest of your party and having your mom be oblivious and it all not mattering because there's a bigger bad. Y'all aren't wrong in that it's weird that he doesn't say anything but it's perfect as is.

All that said, I do kinda love (Act 3 spoilers) super evil wizard villain setting up his whole plan to cast aside the husk of one of the more powerful kings, rip the Luminary's power from his body, dramatically steal the sword of legend, completely destroy the world tree from which all life springs, and murder anyone who stands in his path. But then the Luminary shows up, ruins his plan before he can even do his big reveal, and he's reduced to getting the Luminary drunk and tiptoeing into his room to quietly steal the sword instead. Sure the hero was a dumbass, but I would unironically love a whole act devoted to Mordegon effectively becoming a Hannah Barbara villain while the hero (acts like he?) has no idea what's going on, deftly keeping the sword juuuuust out of reach at every turn.

Yeah give me more of that. Like when you revisit dear dead dad's tomb. I really wanted a line like "Trebek finishes the monster's monologue." followed by the dream manticore or whatever questioning the nature of his reality. The localization is, by and large, amazing. I'm still giggling at encountering an Otter Shambles.

Act 3 would have been better if the MC's first mission on getting to the new timeline was killing his alt-self and exploring the implications of that. Sorry, other me, but this poo poo's important and I'm like 20 levels better and won't gently caress it up like you will.

Better option: You decide to team up, and both agree that the best way to do so is to have one hero sit on the other's shoulders. Naturally, this just adds your two levels together and the rest of the team wonders when you had time to buy a gaudy sword and get a weird haircut or whatever.

Act 3: killing the Alt-MC would probably be a bit heavy for Dragon Quest, but it would have been a fun gag to have him timewarp and help out alt-him and team Racer X style or dumping alt-him off with the monks to train as a backup luminary.

Personally I wish they'd done something different with everyone's characterization in the third part. Second part brought in everyone's character development like Erik's sister and building the sword of light and confronting Jasper at the end for Hendrik but it felt like they started doing that but at 8 times the speed for everyone. I would've liked something else so it doesn't seem like running through the same beats but compressed for them.

I'm just starting Dragon Quest 11 and now I wish every game would give a recap of the story thus far when you continue your game. I've got a terrible memory and often RPGs lose my engagement because I'll forget what the hell is going on in plot over the course of however long it takes to finish.
