Just found out a physical copy of Flashback, the quest for identity is coming out for the switch so I preordered it. Supposedly the definitive version of the game

I love that game but only beat it once. My favorite stages are the game show stage and the stage with the subway trains

i don't like the new graphics filters but they're optional. definitely one of my fondest rentals. the SNES Cart case is really cool looking:

I think we rented Flashback 4 or 5 times. It was definitely one of my fondest remembered SNES games, although we weren't very good at it at all and I think we only ever got like 3/4 of the way through the 2nd level (where you had to do weird contracts in order to get enough credits to unlock a secret area or something) but drat those graphics and music were badass.

I got to the very end of flashback but for some reason couldn't get the last elevator to work in the final sequence. Fail.

Reading about it, it seems very similar to Out of This World, which we rented a bunch of times, but I don't think ever beat until years later on an emulator.

Same devs (Delphine Software), though different people designed them

yeah, it looks visually very similar and a lot of the gameplay elements are similar, but Flashback seems crazier and a little more puzzle focused

Yeah I felt like it was very much a puzzle game in the sense where you're presented with a new situation and you have to figure out how to tackle it. Options 1-7 result in death, option 8 is success. You then retain this information for your next play through. Kinda like a cool futuristic Dragon's Quest but you also have a gun.

I played this at a "Virtual Reality Expo" on this big, weird machine you had to look down into. I remember there was a wizard who would yell at you for being an idiot every time you got killed, which was like every two seconds.
