Here's the thing about their over indulgent spending--they recognize that it looks bad but also desperately want to show it off to everyone. So the solution, I guess, is to show it off and then try to make it sound better than it actually is. At this point their best bet would be to shut the hell up. I can say that, secure in the knowledge that they won't actually take the advice, because too many people there have egos too large to contemplate the idea of keeping quiet.
