As great as that trailer is, the best part is easily Russel Crowe's glorious hair. Maybe that's why flat, limp-haired Zod is so pissed at the El's. Their superior follicle genes.

Trailer for R.I.P.D. http://cms.springboard.gorillanation.com/previews/37/video/706579/0/0/1 Looks fun, like MIB for the dead (ok, exactly like it). Still, looks perfect for Reynolds and Bridges.

CaptainHollywood posted:It actually looks really fun. And very MiB. It's really not. I saw it a couple months ago at a test screening in Burbank. It had some funny moments, but it's entirely forgettable and really leaves you not caring what happens to anyone you see. The great part about MIB is that you genuinely care about J and K's relationship throughout the film. The same cannot be said of RIPD, and even though both Reynolds and Bridges put up swell performances, the writing basically has them playing stereotypes and caricatures rather than real people. There's no build or tension, it's incredibly predictable, and the people you meet at the beginning of the film are pretty much the same people at the end. It had some good action in it, I guess, but that's because it moves so fast that it really rushes to get to each set-piece. A few of the jokes were really funny, but not enough to carry the film as a whole. I wanted to like it with Reynolds, Bridges, and Bacon all in it, but it fell flat and needs some work beefing up the characters. My girlfriend came out going "That was poo poo. It was way too cartoonish" and not in the good way that, say, The Avengers or MIB were cartoonish. There just isn't anything deeper than what might be enjoyed by a 10-year-old in it. I guess if you're a big fan of the comics it's worth a rental (I've never read them so don't know how close the story and all were), but it's really not worth paying full-price when there are so many other huge films coming out this Summer that deserve the money instead. If you shortened it to 30-60 seconds, it'd be a fantastic TV spot: layer a few lines of the Zod speech over some shots of Domestic Superman and Peril, then break into that drum beat with a montage of battle and cool shots, end with the voice over guy saying MAN OF STEEL COMING JUNE 14.

It's funny, I never get tired of seeing the initial Fast 6 trailer but by now I want to stab someone if I have to see another trailer for that Vince Vaughan Google movie or After Earth. And I don't think After Earth even looks that bad, though the Vince Vaughan one looks painfully generic: slap together an 80s joke, add racial stereotypes, mix in a recent popular film reference, all backed up by "wacky" inappropriate behavior in the work place set to a beloved song while Vaughan mugs for the camera = movie. Something about Fast 6 I can watch again and again before a film without minding. Same with the Man of Steel one. timeandtide fucked around with this message at 03:59 on Apr 29, 2013 |
