Either can be bought new for under $50k, as can a used ZL1 or GT350. C7 Vettes are also in this price range, all of which are world-class sports cars often under warranty, generally reliable, and will run rings around a Miata.

I think the c7 is the most compelling car there for sure. How bulletproof are those? I'm interested in how the C8 does, it seems like it addresses the problem of corvettes feeling cheap to sit in, and a mid engine 450hp or however much for 60k new is real good. I wonder if they will get big dealer markups

For context a ~$40k C7 Grand Sport is 30 seconds faster a lap around VIR versus a 2019 RF Club, 2:47.1 vs 3:17.2. That difference is measured on a geologic scale it’s so huge. For similar money, if you want a serious sports car and not a weekender pretendomobile, any of the above cars fits the bill. Also: both Camaros and Mustangs have arguably been world-class sports cars, not muscle cars, for this entire past generation. They’re better M3s than the M3 is. Also Caymans are a flat 4 or 6 pal

There's not really a fun sports car in that high 30's low 50's range that isn't either: Apparently people have been dropping 2UR-GSEs from Lexus IS-Fs into Toyota 86es. Though I guess that falls into the category of "insurance nightmare". Alternately you could probably import an early NSX from Canada for about 55-60k USD -- they're about 70k CAD and a lot of them were imported from the US in the first place so they tend to have MPH speedos.

Okay, I knew Fry's was going downhill, but... the last time I went in there, 6 months ago, they had a reasonable amount of stock, and several employees on hand. I need a power supply. This is the power supply aisle. It had one mini ATX PSU, and three 250W no-name ATX PSUs. The PC case aisle looks similar - the only cases on hand are the ones that don't come with a power supply. The rest of the store looks pretty much the same, even the vendor-owned displays have been yanked out, and the 3 theater testing rooms are bare (1 has nothing at all, the other have a TV, but no speakers, TV isn't on). Car audio is stripped. The only vendor display I saw was for the Nintendo Switch. I asked about PSUs. Someone who seemed to act like they were in charge said "oh, we'll have more arriving in about 2-3 weeks, please check back then!". The guy behind him whispered to me "Go to Altex if you need one now". I'd heard of them, but never been there. Also, anytime I tried to take more than 1 or 2 pics in Fry's in the past, I'd get yelled at. Nobody gave a poo poo today. I spent an hour walking around taking pictures. Then I went to the restroom, where 2 out of 3 urinals were broken, 1 out of 3 toilets broken. They didn't have a single desktop PC available for purchase or on display. They had a couple of Surface knockoffs on display, but when I asked, none for sale. I even waltzed into the warehouse portion, and... nothing. Not even a forklift to be found. $60 later at Altex.. probably a little spendy, but seeing as my PC is powering off whenever the gently caress it wants, and this is exactly the same issue I've had with other PSUs when they were dying, figured it's the cheapest parts canon part from a brand I trust. Finally realized that I have "resume power on after power failure" enabled, which is probably why it's trying to restart several times after it shuts off. I got 9 years out of a CX 500. If I get half of that out of another CX I'll be happy. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 21:46 on Jan 25, 2020 |

That's what I figured. There's no way vendors would rip out vendor-owned product otherwise, and ESPECIALLY vendor displays. You have to really screw the pooch for a vendor to yank their display models. The vendor stuff is usually supplied to the store on consignment - the store provides shelf space, but doesn't pay for it until it's either sold or unaccounted for. The newest phone shown on hand was an unlocked Galaxy S9, but when I asked, they didn't actually have any. The only carrier display was AT&T with dummy phones, but they were all long-depreciated Sony Xperia phones.

I agree with all of this but will add an M3 can be had with four doors. Speaking of things with four doors why not a CTS-V? Seriously in the range of 30-50 there is SO MUCH you can buy. Upkeep is nothing crazy, but I did a fair amount of maintenance after I bought it to get back where it should be. If you can't work on it yourself or have a local indy that is reasonable that knows them and trust, they will be very expensive for dealer repairs/maintenance. I would never recommend one to a normal guy that has to plan on a dealer to service.. although to be fair that goes with any near 20 year old car. OEM parts can be quite costly. If you're seriously interested, do some homework. While you should absolutely not be scared of one that isn't fully documented (Porsche-philes seem to turn their nose up at a car that doesn't have a receipt for the air freshener from the local Porsche dealership) an overly cheap beater 911 can quickly become a very expensive one.
