God drat it, I went and remembered that Cranston vanishes 20 minutes into Godzilla 2014 and the entire movie becomes a boring piece of poo poo, and now I'm annoyed again.

Counterpoint: Godzilla 2014 rules.

But yeah, it would have been way better if the son had died instead of the father. Then Cranston would be consumed by rage, that the Muto's had taken first his wife, then his kid, until the end when Godzilla avenges his family and he finds peace in Godzilla and is absolved.

I just can't believe there are all these scenes of the son just being a soldier with other soldiers and nothing at all is happening other than proper military procedures. It felt like I was watching something made for internal use by the Marine Corps.

Yeah, that's kinda what I meant. Like, I don't think they brought the movie down that much, but Cranston is in a whole 'nother tier of actors from Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Cranston and Watanabe were the highlights of the film, aside from the big G himself.

It'd be fine if it was a joke, like Shin with all the bureaucracy stuff, but instead we just sort of watch the military do things militarily and that is all

So Brett Ratner came out swinging against the pervasive effect RottenTomatoes can have with audiences, basically a weird emphasis on performance rather than critique, and putting that out there is good.. but on the other hand, it's Brett Ratner.

An old man who had a successful and happy family life taken from him has no animus against the MUTO nuclear family. It's just a very broad revenge concept. It's hard to imagine Godzilla as a stand in for Cranston's son, so the movie's whole concept has to be reworked.

Tuxedo Catfish posted:

Nah. That's the joke. Since this is from a US and not Japanese perspective, the military is seen as competent and brave and resourceful - but it's irrelevant, they can't win anyway

I'm imagining it right now and it would be amazing.

But seriously all you'd need to rework for the story to work with Cranston instead of boring soldier man is to have Cranston misplace the blame of the loss of his family onto Godzilla for a good part of the film, and then when he realizes the Mutos were actually to blame and that Godzilla has something like a conscience, he shifts his mad scientist efforts to the right side of the conflict.

Correction: the Army is always competent and prepared, they are just useless.

And the Army is a total joke in Godzilla' 14. Even Brody can't to disarm the bomb that he's specifically there to disarm.

So he blames his...son? For his wife's death and his own retreat into work? And the movie is about Godzilla destroying the MUTO family because he's jealous of their cuddles?

Shin Godzilla also had snappy dialogue and editing, while Godzilla 14 mumbles to itself while kickin dirt. Shin Godzilla also delivers the goods, while Godzilla 14 skips over a loving fight scene it spends 10 minutes building up.

Well, in the existing film, Godzilla is in a thematic surrogate father role. In this suggested change, just because we're swapping the father's and son's deaths, doesn't mean we're swapping Godzilla into a surrogate son role. No, the father would blame God.

You wrote me a letter,
and this is how it went:

That reminds me, a little earlier I uploaded a photo to Imgur and was recommended a picture in the sidebar of what was clearly a dead baby. The story attached was of a man whose baby was born 5 months premature. The entire thing was this weird capsule of internet 'culture' where we have someone sharing something way too goddamn personal with the internet for likes, people telling him it's hosed up to post those pictures, people saying the people saying it's hosed up should shut up, people posting image memes of Loki and members of the Avengers saying 'Farewell', and people saying how beautiful this 4 month-year-old fetus looks.

It's the weirdest goddamn thing.
