Yeah remember when those seven Dallas officers got straight up murdered on purpose and the GOP used it as an opportunity to.....pass $25m in grants for high-caliber resistant body armor for local PDs.

Well, the holy grail for the GOP would be a bloc of thousands of illegal votes, because they've been spending the last, oh, 15 years or so insisting that non citizens vote regularly and that's why we need draconian election security measures. They've never come close to coming up with anything more than a handful of in-person voter fraud cases (because that's the stupidest goddamn way to try to swing an election you could try) so if the state of Texas suddenly discovered 60k+ non citizen voters, every GOP statehouse would be pounding their shoes on the podium declaring we must have cast iron Voter ID laws. So, they popped a mega huge boner over this, you saw state officials and other GOP pols nationwide start to use this as messaging and the President tweeted about it even. So yeah, this, to my memory, was the largest claim of in-person voter fraud in US history, certainly the largest from a state agency, and that it's bullshit is huge. If it turned out that 58k non-citizens voted in Texas, that'd be the game.

On a funnier note the Houston police union loser that, for no reason, started just screaming about how he was gonna punish all the mean people who said cops do bad things sometime is now making the national circuit on Fox to keep crying like a bitch about how cops are the real victims. Meanwhile they apparently found no drugs in the raid that got those cops shot and no one can confirm there was even a tip.

Biggest county has biggest percentage of statewide number. Okay? I mean, the number is still a fraction of a fraction of a percentage and this is such a non-headline story it's silly, but sure. Yes, look into it. No, it's not really worth reporting about especially not at this volume.

Yeah that's correct but the initial story (even if the inflated numbers were true) was basically a non-story to begin with that it's unfortunate that now we have to correct it down from "already stupidly low incidence rate" to "even more obscenely low incidence rate"

Conservatives know how the media operates, they knew that if they just threw that number out there the press would, without investigating, report in the "official said, but critics say" style that let people pick their own reality. The Tribune, at least, looked at it, immediately saw it was spurious , and had a response tweet that was like "hold on a sec here guys," that got widely shared among the left-of-center on-line set. Then they put a reporter on it, and like within a day she had unraveled the whole loving thing. But the damage has been done and now the brain-worm'd elderly Fox News grandpas of Texas will believe that some tens of thousands of non-citizens voted illegally and it'll be an enduring myth that your racist aunt will still bring up at Thanksgiving 10 years from now.
