The problem here is that GW2 is a casual MMO, so any concept that doesn't immediately come across to the player can be considered a failure of design, since stopping to evaluate something beyond a first impression is an undue demand on a person's time.

Well you gotta zoom in on the hologram that appears for 1-2 seconds, google a guide, copy-paste the waypoint code, and hope you got into a map that hasn't spawned the crazy mob. Good luck at figuring out if it has spawned, how much time is left in the window, and successfully tagging it before it's burned down.

If you're looking for a specific mob, it's gonna be 2 hours before the next 1 hour window, and you better not leave your computer because God knows that's when it will be spawned.

Enjoying this game as a casual MMO thing, but have a few questions here. Currently I have a level 19 ranger that I enjoy leveling with. If I want to try out some pvp, what options are available now? I'm not a huge fan of pvp in general in MMO's, but it would be nice to experiment a little.

Secondly, is there some site like wowhead for GW2? Sometimes I get items that I have no idea what do, if I should try to sell them on the market, stash them in my bank, or sell them to vendors.

And lastly, are there any items I get while leveling or from login bonuses or something that I shouldn't open right away?

you can jump into spvp or wvw any time. spvp will pop you up to 80 and let you try out all your abilities and traits and stuff. wvw keeps you at your level and gear.

and nah just open all that poo poo, no reason to save it unopened.

GW2efficiency or GW2shinies are both good for looking up what to do with things. That said, the majority of the time you're going to want to salvage everything that you aren't actually using for yourself and sell the materials. You could keep them I guess in case you want to craft later, but I'd recommend selling them because it's an excellent source of money, especially when you're starting out.

So, there's a few different PvP modes, you can hop into any of them anytime and everyone gets scaled to the same level and such. Regular PvP is team based, and you can go for straight up deathmatch, capturing points on a map or defending an npc in a stronghold while trying to kill the other team's npc.

Then you have World vs. World, where huge swarms of players fight for control of a map. Your "team" is your server, and this gets really, really large scale. You'll be rolling around with an army of literally dozens of other people doing objectives and fighting and stuff. It's pretty easy to jump into and just find the mob and try not to die, maybe drop some buffs and stuff.

There's a lot more depth to WvW if you want to really get into it, too. You can build siege towers and assault golems, or go solo roaming around the map and assassinate stragglers or escort supply caravans and stuff. You get gear rewards pretty easily just by playing, and there are different "reward tracks" that you can select that let you get, say, dungeon specific gear or certain rare crafting mats without ever playing PvE content.

As far as websites, metabattle.com is a good place to go for endgame builds and wiki.guildwars2.com for gear, map and event info. You can even type /wiki [search term] in game and it'll auto pull up the appropriate wiki page!

e: actually, if you're on a free account I think WvW is locked until a certain level but I;m not entirely sure, I've had the core game since p. much release.

Xun
Apr 25, 2010

Unfortunately I think Gw2 just doesn't have the population of spergs to keep a comprehensive website of everything alive, but on the other hand guild wars needs it a lot less. Item "priority" is basically

can I salvage? No -> can I sell it on the AH? No -> can I merch it? No -> trash.

This remains true basically for the rest of the game unless you're saving up materials for crafting, but at your level you reaaaallly don't want to bother since it's just a gold sink.

Dulfy is good for guides to new events and the HoT zone content, along with some other things I'm sure. The wiki is good for.....maybe lore things? Most times if I'm having trouble finding a specific point or doing a specific puzzle I have to watch annoying videos on YouTube since the wiki will be useless.

Idk what are you looking for from a "wowhead" type website? I always use it to find transmogs and see drop tables and locations of dungeons/raids and stuff, but that kind of thing is basically nonexistent in gw2.

Waci
May 30, 2011

A boy and his dog.
Like someone said, Dulfy has dungeon/achievement/whatever event scavenger hunt guides and Metabattle has good but not necessarily best builds, and the wiki documents a lot of things to a reasonable extent.

I think sPvP might also be hidden away from free accounts until a certain level, so you might have to bind a key to opening the pvp menu or actually walk to the portal in Lion's Arch to get to the lobby, but otherwise you can jump right in. Both sPvP and WvW have at least some unique skins, and can get you dungeon loot without having to do dungeons as well. You also get level-up consumables from them at a rate that seems quite fast once you get a bit higher level.

Also, as much as people in this thread like to poo poo on sPvP, it's still much much better than WoW pvp.

Wait, hologram? I'd click on the thingy in my inventory, hurriedly close the window, and see one or two red, flickery pom-poms to either side of my character. If those were supposed to be holographic representations of the current beastie, then the Dulfy guide forgot to mention tribbles.

And then it stopped functioning entirely.

It displays tiny models of the creatures to hunt, about the size of minipets. It does not, however, account for the ground, so often they clip through terrain and are unseeable aside from the red cloud effect that is meant to draw your attention.
(As an aside I first activated it right where you get it in the green Wyvern nest terrain and my colorblind eyes could not even pick out the clouds until I tried it a third time over on some rocks).

As for it ceasing to function, there are brief rest periods between each set of huntable creatures.

So... two spots that distract your attention from a third spot on the ground, which may be underground or obscured by your character model.

This is why you don't let the interns do anything player-facing.

That's actually very helpful, thanks. I never would have thought of dicking around with the camera on top of the rest.
