The CFR report is so ideological at this point. They did an accounting of the war in february that amounts to fantasy. They list all these appropriations of arms without counts or delivery involved. It's a sliver of a sliver of the overal package, only a portion got to Ukraine, all of it is nearly spent, and whats on the way in no way meets their needs. Yet they conclude we're doing the best, bang up job ever in supporting a war effort and a teensy bit more will slay Ruussia.

Mearshimer had a debate with Dobriansky last week that was just abysmal. Every talking point she made was this wishful thinking. She keeps countering every material weakness on the ground with "but we could send more and close that gap" ignoring the material realities abound.

There is no time, there is no productive capactiy, wishing and hoping time is long gone. If they need 5 million 155mm shells a year to fight Russia, either we deliver 5 million shells now or face the music. There's no tomorrow, but our official policy planning has no urgency. They are looking at it as a long term stalemate still.

Oh man this was as bad as I thought it'd be

The pro-funding side is just the same old talking points, appeals to western "values" that I already know are discarded at the slightest inconvenience. It doesn't help that the event was sponsored by the Council of Foreign Relations lmao and it shows with the audience.

I'm about 2/3rds through but tbh I don't think Mearsheimer is doing that great a job and his partner definitely isn't. Kind of what I was talking about earlier, his approach is ultimately still pro-US and thus still limited. Both are still miles ahead of the pro funding side - those two women barely seem to be paying attention to developments in the war, not even on a month to month basis let alone daily like we do in this topic.

His partner is a cavalryman light colonel and doesn't know how to talk to people in this cultural milieu, is the thing. It doesn't matter if you're right, or if you know the business of the arme blanche that a bunch of educated natsec people, they're going to speak in this mandarin fashion.

Nothing is more common in conversation with an educated liberal than to experience extreme difficulty in ascertaining what he is talking about. At times his remarks appear to consist exclusively of predicates, which are woven together in an intricate manner, the whole mass seeming, like Mohammed's coffin, to hang in the air, attached to nothing whatever.

To the educated liberal any idea whatever comes as a surprise, for which it is by no means certain that he will not be totally unprepared. He does not understand, because he does not expect to understand, and it takes him an appreciable time to get such intellectual forces as he has into a position to be used at all. His mind is like a rusty old smooth-bore cannon mounted on a decrepit carriage, which requires much hauling about before it can be pointed at anything, and then it is sure to miss fire.

A prominent example of intellectual turbidity is the prevalent habit of announcing as a reason for a fact, the fact itself. "Why do you not put salt into Jeni's Ice Cream?" you ask of a liberal cook. "We do not put salt into Ice Cream," is the explanation. "How is it with so much armaments made in your country none of it is stored up for wartime?" "No. We do not store up armaments for wartime in our country." If the Latin poet who observed, "Happy is he who is able to know the
reasons of things," had lived in DC, he might have modified his dictum so as to read "Unhappy is the man who essays to find out the reason of things."

Illustrations of these peculiarities will meet the observant outsider at every turn. "Why did he do so?" you inquire in regard to some preposterous act. "Yes," is the compendious reply.

Under these circumstances, the talk of a liberal will be like the testimony of a witness in an English court, who described a fight in the following terms :
"He'd a stick, and he'd a stick, and he w'acked he, and he w'acked he, and if he'd a w'acked he as hard as he w'acked he, he'd a killed he, and not he he."

The same state of mental confusion leads to a great variety of acts, often embarrassing, and to a well-ordered intellect always irritating. The defence minister makes it a matter of routine practice to use up the last of whatever there may be in his charge, and then serves the next operation minus some invariable concomitant. When asked what he means by it, he answers ingenuously that there was no more. "Then why did you not ask for more in time? I did not ask for any more," is his satisfactory explanation.

its kind of surprising that we don't see more stuff like this. there was that time where Russia loaded up a tank(?) with HE and sent it forward into Ukrainian positions and it seemed really effective

This happened at least twice. Once seemed to be an attack against a trench (protected by a minefield) and I think the second time was just to clear a minefield or maybe just to test it.

Reading articles about this war after they've fallen out of relevance is very strange.

quote:

The attempted VBIED attack underscores the increasing desperation of Russian forces, 16 months after Russia widened its war on Ukraine.

Many tens of thousands of Russia's best troops have been wounded or killed. Russian forces have written off no fewer than 10,000 of their best armored vehicles. The Kremlin's winter offensive was a bust. At the cost of thousands of lives, Russian and allied regiments finally captured the ruins of Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region.

But that pyrrhic victory consumed the people and equipment Moscow should have devoted to shoring up its defensive lines in southern and eastern Ukraine ahead of Ukraine's long-anticipated 2023 counteroffensive.

That operation kicked off on the night of June 4, as several Ukrainian brigades—some of them armed with Western tanks and fighting vehicles—attacked along several axes in Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk Oblasts, as well as on the flanks of Bahkmut. The Ukrainians slowly are advancing in several sectors, steadily erasing the Russians' modest winter gains.

The Russians were running out of modern weaponry long before the current counteroffensive. Now they're running out even faster—and turning to long-stored tanks and fighting vehicles and increasingly bizarre modifications of existing vehicles, including a wheeled BTR armed with rocket pods borrowed from a helicopter.

quote:

After running low on modern T-72B3 and T-90M tanks, the Kremlin began pulling out of storage upgraded T-62s from the 1980s, first-generation T-72s from the 1970s and, most shockingly, basic T-55s and T-54s that rolled off the factory floor probably sometime in the late 1950s.

Those four-person T-54/55s with their thin armor, crude optics and minimally-stabilized 100-millimeter guns are worse than useless in an intensive fight, especially at night. They're deathtraps for their crews.

The Russians know this. They at first deployed the T-54/55s along with slightly newer T-62s as short-range, mobile artillery. But a tank doesn't make a great howitzer: its gun can't angle high enough to shoot a shell more than 10 miles or so, and its optics don't allow for long-range aiming.

It’s slightly better than nothing in an army that's under relentless assault and running low on things with which to fight back, however. That the Russians are turning to vehicle-borne IEDs is symptomatic of this poverty.

The T-54/55 VBIED isn't the only one to roll out from Russian positions in recent days. Russian troops also tried ramming Ukrainian positions with an MT-LB tractor loaded up with explosive mine-clearing line-charges.

An army with adequate supplies of long-range munitions wouldn't bother trying to blow up a Ukrainian position with a radio-controlled tank full of explosives. Especially considering how many anti-tank guided missiles the Ukrainians have.

It is the same as body counts in Vietnam (or any American war) or Israel's obsession about their kill / death ratio. If people are willing to accept those loses and it doesn't actually degrade their ability to fight, it doesn't really change anything. Whatever, you can say that is cope, but ultimately we lost in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq by using k/d as a metric of success.
