After a frustrating evening of getting 0-1 kills in IJN botes yesterday, (The contests make me irrationally upset sometimes.) my first outing of the day in my Isokaze of all ships netted me the 4 kills I needed to get the preview aka the free port slot for the German line. Went towards B in New Dawn, marked the Phoenix who was the lone inhabitant, got nailed by him while the team blasted him to bits, slipped by on the A side, took out a BB with the entire 9 spread who was totally zoom locked, found and killed both enemy carriers, and then blindsided another BB on my way to the NE quad where our CVs were about to get nailed. Then had a whole spread .2 km from one last ship and the match ended. Good times.

The first few are really easy, because you only need like one win each, or two if you happen to lose a match. Once you move up to 3-4 stars needed, it's much more difficult due to occasionally getting a string of moronic teams. I got up to Rank 15 in like 2 days, but have simply been oscillating up and down since - though admittedly I stopped with ranking for ~2 weeks or so. Currently have 1 star in the correct advancement, at least.

Ranked is awful because no one plays it. I'm rank 14 and every time I queue up there are four or five/fourteen queued and I give up after no change for five minutes. I'd like to do it more but the US pop is so low it's pointless.

Can anyone offer some advice for the Iowa because I currently hate this ship. I am under the assumption it must be something I am doing wrong. I loved the North Carolina and figured that when it didn't perform well I was likely to blame. I expected the Iowa to be more of the same in a larger package but it just seems so terrible. It feels like it suffers from poor armor, bad accuracy and penetration, in addition to the long rudder shift time and ship length making torpedoes near impossible to dodge. I should add that I am not in the back trying to snipe, but what can I do to improve?

Are you armor angling? Because if you're not armor angled anything will kill you. This is true for basically all ships at high tier.

Enter your name pilot!

Use only your frontal turrets and keep your nose pointed at the enemy you will bounce shells for days. Those 3 extra guns in the back arent worth showing your broadside for if you can help it. Back when it was bugged I would point my nose at guys and all but stop or go full reverse and just fire away. The Iowa is much too large to be really be avoiding full torpedo salvos, you're fairly likely to be hit by at least one. Make sure you have the rudder shift mod. Really the only ship that can pen you when you've pointed your nose at them is the Yamato or some lucky rear end shot. I did once manage to citadel an Iowa in my Iowa when we were pointing our noses at each other.

It still surprises me that DD captains are willing to drive straight towards me in a Mogami or Cleveland. I figured players would wise up after about tier V but nope. Once they get under 10km im hitting them with like 30-40% of my shots and it just ravages them. And the torpedo spreads are so poorly aimed im almost insulted that they thought it would work. It's almost become my specialty.

The Konigsberg is one of those ships that is great if no one shoots at you. Got a Confederate and six kills in one last night. For a lark I tried using AP with the Ogvenoy's guns and yes you can get citadels on the Konigsberg pretty reliably.

You'd be surprised what you can citadel with the 5 inch guns on ships. Atagos/Mogamis and smaller I can reliably citadel, and basically every US CA can be citadeled, even the magical Cleveland (though its infuriatingly inconsistent). The Ibuki/Zao are a bit harder, but I've gotten cits at point blank. The higher the IJN CA tier, the closer you have to get to land those citadels, in practice. The Pepsicola is swiss cheese for it from basically any range where you get a flat enough angle. T5 and lesser is the same, though your guns may not be 5 inchers (127-130mm) at those tiers, reducing your penetration power.

Yeah, MM is definitely still iffy at high tiers. Just bought my Mogami tonight, and the very first match I got in, we had a division of three Yamatos. The enemy team, well, didn't. They had like a Montana, an Iowa, and I think a few North Carolinas. We generally favorably compared in cruisers too, and there wasn't an aircraft carrier in sight. Let's just say it was rather ugly. Oh, it was on Hotspot too, and all three started together.

My last game was solid, and hopefully the higher tier IJN cruisers are as good a scoring citadels as the furutaka. So far the Aoba is really good at being citadelled.

Iowa is inaccurate. You get 293 m dispersion at 23.3 km which is lot higher than IJN battleships.

Armor is only 307 mm maximum so you will still get wrecked if you don't angle your ship. Even angled some shots may penetrate, so just forget about using rear turret unless you can turn, fire rear turret and turn again to angle the ship before enemy finishes reloading. This isn't impossible, but not recommended unless you have C hull (only hull that offers rudder shift reduction)

As for rudder shift you have to get C hull to decrease it, and even then your turn radius is wide so it will be hard to dodge torpedo. Always vary your vector to throw off torpedo.

I just play Iowa like fat cruiser with bigger guns. Use concealment to get to 15 km, shoot salvo, angle and maintain 15-18 km range and keep shooting salvo. I wouldn't go inside 10 km unless I am absolutely sure nobody can torp me. I do get hit a lot (rarely die due to angling and turning), but that's what battleships should do anyway.

Awesome thanks for the advise. While I don't often give a completely flat side unless I'm forced to by external factors, (planes, torps, etc.) I may be over angling while trying to get the rear turret engaged. I do run the rudder shift time mod and am on the C hull but for the sake of my health I may need to cut back on rear turret usage. I also need to work in staying in that 15-18km sweet spot. I think I am getting a little too close at times.

Know anything about the penetration of the guns? Perhaps I need to work on my accuracy but I've seen shots fall under the smoke stacks of cruisers and battleships but I am not coming away with citadels as frequently as I felt like I did in the North Carolina.

Second game this morning in the Ibuki had 7 Yamatos in it and a ton of other tier 10 ships (2 gearings and a shimakeze too) and it was...interesting. I feel like tier 6-8 matches are really the sweet spot in this game (not unlike WoT).

Probably because higher tiers have better deck armor, or you're hitting superstructure. Just don't bother hoping for citadel at range with US ships tbh. Wargaming made US guns piss poor compared to IJN guns.

If only Milliband had eaten a vegan sausage roll instead of a bacon sandwich, we wouldn't be in this mess.
Managed to get the Russian destroyer (which feels like a seriesof suicide runs that may or may not come off) in my Omaha and have singularly failed to get the Konigsberg, 3 different '3 kill' matches, with the closest being one where my torps were 2k away from a carrier when someone on my team capped denying me the 4th kill. From what I've seen the Russian DDs look terrible pre Tier 7 and then become completely overpowered stealth-death machines at tier 9.

Yeah, I started reading the preview on Google books. I'm kind of old fashioned for books, so I'm going to order a hard copy.

One of Aslain's mods is to be able to see all of the ships in the game even if they aren't currently available. One ship that's a complete head scratcher is a Cimmaron class fleet oiler.

Not sure what WG plans on using these for, maybe some sort of convoy escort mission.

Didn't get any 4 kill games this weekend. :smith: I came close a few times, but just couldn't get it. I normally score 1-2 kills per game, three is a really good game. I think I've gotten 4 or 5 only a few times; five likely once.

So I don't claim to be great at this game, but something you just have one of those game where everything clicks. Queue 6 or so of our ships up, 1 of theirs left...

I'm a destroyer (Minekaze) sitting in the central cap waiting to win when I see their lone Marblehead round the bend. I know he's going to see me, but I also have 3 ships close enough that no matter what, the win is sealed. So I decide to smoke screen and engine boost with the intention of ramming him. He gets me from full hp to just about 1k before I make contact and end the game in a blaze of glory.

This is the end screen

And this is what I load into.

Some people take this game a bit too serious.

Does IJN destroyer line get any better than Minekaze? I unlocked the Mutsuki but I'm not sure it's worth it to keep going, and the Mini is pretty great.

Minekaze is considered the highlight of the line by most, but I'm still really enjoying the ships after, compared to the US cruiser line IJN DD's stay really fun. Later ships require a more careful approach though. The Mutsuki gets a lot of hate but it has nice concealment, people tend to forget it has guns and the 10km torps work for me. I actually unlocked my Königsberg in one, burning down 3 enemy destroyers with gunfire then suicide torp rushing an Atlanta (ill-advised generally). The Hatsuharu is similar, but guns are nicer still and I only seem to get put into matches where I'm top tier. Really looking forward to the Fubuki!

The Fubuki owns, the Hatsu is ok, the Mutsuki got pretty hardcore buffed so its ok, the Kagero and Shimakaze have the amazing torps that kill nerds.

But after the Minekaze all IJN DDs suffer from a combination of stupid long reload times on torps, coupled with ever increasing dominance from CVs making it harder to stay undetected. Well, that and CAs getting ridiculously laser accurate and able to snipe you when that plane eventually finds you. BB and CV HP and torpedo defense values skyrocket as well, while torpedo damage only gets a little better.

You can still wreck face, but its not quite like the Minekaze or earlier DDs where you can just carry through sheer force of will and volume of torpedoes to dumb pubby faces.
