I don't think most people use their ring finger unless they're doing a specific technique. Just do alternate plucking practice with a metronome. First and middle finger, don't worry about the left hand just play one note. Start really slow.

A lot of people use the ringer finger if they're playing stuff at higher tempi. Most finger plucking metal guys for example use the ring finger as well but it's a bit tricky.

Yeah sorry I was probably too broad there, I just meant it's not like the "standard" way to play. When I was a bass noob I also was trying to play everything with the ring finger too before I found out that almost all of the stuff I'm listening to was either played with alternate plucking, a pick, or slap/pop.

I did not. I can play it except a few fills. Which is why its great to me. Its like in "Could ever heaven Be Like This" by Idris Muhammad. Its nothing at all until the eight bars where they show you what the gently caress

I thought I got thread ghosted for being not cool, but here, at the end of time and history, on these dead, gay forums, I shure would like to know wtf is up with those fills with the chromatic sharp slides.

Is replacing the pickups in the $30 Ibanez facebook find worth it? I did a pretty detailed setup on it, new strings, new bridge (old one was rusted out), intonation, pickup height, etc. The pickups are still dead quiet, and the pots are scratchy as all get out. I really like the neck and how the bass feels overall however. In reading about these DXP/DXJ pickups, the general consensus that I've found is that they're not great.

Would it be worth it to spend $150-200 bucks on a nice set of PJ pickups for this cheapo SR300? If so, any suggestions on what to get? I was toying with the idea of the EMG HZ passive set which comes with 2 vol 1 tone pots and would replace everything in the body, currently the pickups are passives, but there is probably room for a battery in the backplate hole. Would that battery being inside there cause interference with stuff?

Are you trying to turn a buck?

Then, no.

Are you trying to turn it into a high quality player?

Also no.

Do you like playing it for whatever reason and don't want to drop for a good bass?

Maybe

Seems legit, so it'd be a better spend putting it toward something else eventually. Sort of what I was thinking as I typed out that novel, thanks! Are neck profiles a thing, or is it all measurement based?

Just as I was typing my response heh. Makes sense that would be the correct path, any recs in the thin neck world or is that something I'd just have to go to sam ash or whatever and get a feel for in person?

I'm a 100% whore for Lakland, so that's gonna be my recommendation. Best necks on the market outside of boutique basses, imo. Even on their lower-end stuff (which will still run you $700-ish)

I got a brubraker last year and it was such a game changer. A high quality bass, like the guy above with Lakeland, once you are along enough to appreciate the difference is profound.

Also, neck measurements are a thing. C or D shaped or a combo like fender does. Then the radii of the cut.

I wish you could play this brubaker neck...it's unreal.

Thanks again for the info, I appreciate it all! I don't think I'm quite ready to drop big bucks quite yet, I mean.. this sr300 feels great, I've got an ear for sound so I can tell it sounds like poo poo, but that's really as far along as I am right now. I'll head into my local shop and see if anything there fits the bill at a few hundred bucks so far as sounding better than this sr300 with the same playability.

What even are the good lower end basses? I jumped right in with a $700 MIM jazz bass because it was the beginning of the pandemic and my birthday and the internet said jazz bass necks are thinner and this added up to gently caress it and clicking order now on sweetwater. Thank god it turned out just fine.

Just got back from the local shop, traded in the $30 special for $120 and a keyboard I had kicking around forever toward an Ibanez SR600E. Should be here in..... June of next year :(

I've never seen a big box music store in such shambles, they had almost nothing on the walls, it was lookin' pretty dull in there.

I have no complaints about my 735a at all. I expect it to be a bit chunkier than many basses, its a Yamaha thing, and I played a friend's 1200S for a while back in the 80's. People do argue about whether the 700 series passive tone is any better than the 400 series passive, I think they're both fine, I don't really hear that much difference unless you want more of a passive tone knob option which admittedly is a little odd on the 700's. That makes the 400 PJ incredible value, if you don't want active tones.

So my step son plays drums in his hs jazz band, and was telling me how their bassist (electric) has a hard time playing bc his action is so high. Told him that if the kid and his parents were ok with it, I'd be happy to run a full setup on his bass.

Holy poo poo... the neck is so bowed you could hunt deer with it. Truss rod had no tension on it whatsoever. Thankfully it engaged in tension after a turn or two.

Already straightened out a good bit overnight. Saddle height doesn't look too bad, hoping the intonation isn't too off either, but not holding my breath.

Yikes, at least the trussrod is functioning. hosed-up saddle screws etc can be replaced without too much trouble or expense, and even the whole bridge can be replaced pretty cheap if needed, but a hosed trussrod usually means the whole neck needs to get replaced (trussrod can be replaced but the minimum price there is at least as much as a whole neck).

Hopefully it holds itself well as you dial it in, there's years of tension being finally offset so it might protest a bit.

James Jamerson played with one finger. But yeah that can really wear you out tho. Big thing with this hobby is to avoid any carpal injuries.

I actually used my ring and pinky for my last gig after playing for 3 hours just to give me a break, but that was a little dangerous too

I think for straight eighths or quarter notes, using one finger gives a more even tone, like this:

There's certainly debate about the topic though.

The Science Goy

IMO the best technique is the one that gives a consistent result without undue stresses on joints (as mentioned, carpal tunnel and other repetitive stress injuries are very possible and effort should be made to mitigate it). That can be a different technique for different people, there's no "right" way and any technique will need to be practiced and refined.

I think two finger plucking is so common because for a lot of people it's a good balance of consistency, ability to play fairly fast, and comfortable to play. All down picking should be pretty consistent too, but can be harder to keep up speed vs alternate picking, and for me it's very tiring but I don't pick often and I'm very notgood at it.

:yeah: @ the above. The checklist should be A) is this causing pain/damage and B) is this technique efficient for what I’m trying to play. Past that it really is all personal. Dogmatic technique purists/people trying to make money teaching (this isn’t bad, but they like to tell you that you MUST do X, etc etc especially on YouTube and such) may tell you otherwise but just have a look at how people playing in bands you like do it and you’ll realize how varied playing styles are.

The Sterling SUB basses are in the $250/$300 range and a joy to play. Neck is very Jazzish (to me). Only complaint the active pickup is very hot and needs to be eq tamed. If not replaced outright. Other than that I love mine.

I was able to get it pretty much to the same relief and action that I play my own with. Intonation wasn't too terribly off, which was nice. I'm always worried that I'm gonna run out of travel in the saddles.

It really isn't a bad sounding/playing bass, hopefully this'll help him progress in his playing.
