I have to admit I never really poke my head into this D&B thread, but over in the newly titled UK Bass thread there was talk of this Friday Five thing that sounded interesting, and since I love Jungle I thought why not. I mostly own and like Jungle that was made in 93-94. This was when so much progress was made to the sound. Something from early 93 could sound widely different to summer 93. This was before the influx of so much Ragga Jungle(not that Ragga Jungle was bad, but too often you'd find some quickly knocked up thing with a Ragga star spitting over a chopped Amen. Boring and predictable) and before the mutation into Tech Step and the subsequent deforestation to pave way for the foundations what is now known as modern Drum & Bass. It seems like most people just post a list, but those who've had the misfortune to see my posts elsewhere know I just like to ramble on and on and on so I'm not going to do that. Hope that's okay!

Now to start off I'd present Lennie De Ice. You'll know him - or you should know him, if you don't for shame! - for probably the first proto-Jungle tune We R I.E. But no one really knows him afterwards, were he ran the Armshouse and later Do Or Die labels and put out belters such as this tune - Make A Difference. Samples from We R I.E. float through the track, the Hardcore sound still in the mix with those uplifting digital hoovery organy sounds, but just enough ruffneck samples cut through the track to remind you that you ain't in safe white boi Houseland no more.

Now where would Jungle be without Ibiza Records. This label put out so many good Hardcore tracks during 91-92, but they all had that vibe that would be pivotal in creating the Jungle scene. These tracks and this label, as far as I'm concerned, are endemic to the Jungle scene. Of course they didn't stop in 92, continuing for years and sprouting off labels like 3rd Party and Kemet not to mention pushing far, far too many Potential Bad Boy records. From 1993 I give you DJ Genisis & Kenny X - Wheel The Bass. Again another perfect meld of Hardcore and early Jungle. Pitched up vocals("You abandoned me", pretty much the Jungle scene telling the mainstream folk who said it was poo poo to gently caress off) that suddenly melt into pounding breaks and dark hoovers with Ragga chanting over it.

Time to taste the future with A Guy Called Gerald. Another initial pioneer in the Jungle sound(try and pick up his Sunshine EP released as a white on Columbia shortly before they dropped him). This is one of the guys Goldie loved and tried to emulate, plus I get my username from a track of his so hey! Darker Than I Should Be(also known on his excellent Black Secret Technology album as Alita's Dream) remains one of my favourite tunes of all times. Way too dense Jungle with kicks that just sound like crackling electricity and sonar beeps and bloops that just make the track seem as wide and deep and black as the Atlantic. Jazzy trumpets just round off sheer bliss.

Flytronix - Shadowlands. Hope you've been smoking the crack for this one. As if the Predator 2 samples didn't put you in a dark place, the darkness of the rest of the track will. Deep, haunting, rolling tune with a bass and drumline line only punctuated now and then by beeps, fizzing pads and yet more Predator 2 samples.

Finally I'll chuck in some 4hero for good measure. Talk Around Town is an album track off their second album Parallel Universe, on the mighty, mighty Reinforced Records, one of the premier Jungle labels of the day. Largely picked because I absolutely love 4hero, but also partly to remind folks that no matter what, chances are we'll never be as intricate, jazzy, soulful or skilled in production as these guys. But that's okay, the world needs it's street sweepers and/or warm up acts as well.

His presence here makes me happy as gently caress.

SUBFRIES
Apr 10, 2008

A day late, and a little lean on the content from me, but here's five from me, from the jungle days:

  • Mask - "Square Off" (Dope Dragon)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouerivnZhQI

Horns crew! A bass tone that screams "BRISTOL!" to me! And really fast breaks... I think this tune might be an odd one at 180 BPM.

  • DJ SS & Mental Power - "Black (VIP)" (Formation Records)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1tccJvqcsE

Probably my favorite track on the 'Highly Recommended' LP, first LP I ever bought on vinyl. I didn't even know what the "V V V I I I P, VIP BUSINESS" stuff was about, but my friends and I got so hyper when we'd hear this. Ironically, it was a dubstep remix that Joe Nice used to play (a Mark Omen tune?) that got me more in to dubstep, years ago.

  • Asylum - "Base II Dark" (Metalheadz)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDkIX7Xu7BM

    L Double in top form.

  • Trace - "Final Chapta (Rollers Mix)" (Dee Jay Recordings)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrY6H0Ub8yg

All about the snare rolls in the main break, and that soundclash sample at the first break, hooks me in.

Everything I want to put for my fifth I'd have to upload myself, but I have to run out.

I know it's not friday or anything today but my five isn't themed like most of the friday fives. I have been lurking this thread for long but a lion's share of the content posted kind of bore me. Especially the older '90s stuff get this reaction out of me. So I decided to post ones that I like and see what you guys think :shobon:

Anyway:

Drifta & Realign the stars - Catch me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u07zreHhLEs

Chase and status - Time (Memro Remix)

Phetsta - From My Eyes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxVT6bZAu4w

Inhaler - Something About You (J Majik & Wickaman Mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaETalAgdDw

They aren't in any particular order. I don't really know how to summarize them but I'd say that they are rather liquid-y.

Well it's midnight here so I might as well throw my 5 together. It's kind of a mish-mash of stuff. I just caught Bailey's show on Radio 1xtra and he dropped some bangers. There's one remix at the beginning that I'd love to post but I can't find a drat thing about it on the internet except for radio one's site, and most of it was from January. Regardless, here are a couple of the other tunes he dropped, and a couple of my own library right now. I think since it's MY Friday it's going to have to be the Friday 6 for me. I pretty much have to share these 6 tunes.

"Diffused" - The Upbeats
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch52Y2eDrFM
This track is so awesome. I am not the biggest Upbeats fan, but I do love Nobody's Out There. They really make a different kind of drum and bass - kind of has a dark feel to it, but not techy or anything. That being said - I wish they would release this track. Heard it a couple times now on Radio 1xtra and I love it every time I hear it.

"Calling" - Smooth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgTYgjMPMNM
This track alone illustrates how amazing the liquid funk that Viper Recordings puts out really is. Smooth is an up and coming guy on their label - not many releases yet, but this one's coming out soon. Really nice guy too - has personally responded to me a couple of times on his Facebook page. One of the great things about drum and bass - the artists and labels will often reply to their fans on stuff like Facebook. That aside - this track is killer. The vocals are perfect and the music is free and fun. Glad to see Smooth getting a little more fame.

"Somebody Stop Me (feat. 3PM)" - State of Mind & Subsonik
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4EiaDS7QIo
This is off of the brand new release by State of Mind. Their latest album is kind of different from their work in the past. About half of the songs have vocals, and they are not something generic like Hospital (though I am not putting Hospital down by any means). This is easily my favorite track off of the album though.

"The Shield & The Sword (Loadstar Remix)" - Clare Maguire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0Dk-lH6EFw
You probably have heard BLVD off of Nightlife 5, or maybe Space Between, which is a lot more mellow and something really new sounding. Both of those are great. But Loadstar has been pumping out some really awesome remixes lately too. Fighting Fire by Breakage comes to mind. This is a pretty new track though that I just heard last week. Has a very solid buildup and is very melodic. These guys haven't produced anything I dislike yet!

"Strength 2 Strength (Smooth Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Mttnb6IEic
I know, Smooth again. This just goes to show how awesome his remixing skills are too though. He takes an already amazing track by Matrix and Futurebound and improves it. I love the original, but this seriously outdoes it in my book. M&F put out a lot of light-sounding and friendly drum and bass on their last album, but this shows just a shade darker side to it I think, and it works for it amazingly.

"Street Dancer (Delta Heavy Remix)" - Avicii
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qU_v0lZ1DA
This track almost makes me want to laugh every time I hear it. Not in a bad way at all - it is just one of the least expected things ever in a drum and bass remix I think. The original song includes the 80's sounds, flute and all, but Delta Heavy improves upon them. I'm kind of a fan for 80's new wave and the like, so this was right up my alley the first time I heard it. As soon as the 80's part drops, the song picks up and kicks it in true Delta Heavy fashion. It twists from some slow retro-tune to an awesome banger of a track. Can't wait for the full version to be released.

Whatever Friday 5

The theme chosen for this week seems to be "do whatever the gently caress you want", so here goes:

1) The Upbeats - Big Skeleton
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUZ0i3zqzMc
The Upbeats make some drat dirty tunes, and this one's a personal favorite of mine. From the album of the same name.

2) London Elektricity - Songs In The Key Of Knife
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMY8Ge0h4tI
A classic, and the tune that put Hospital on the map as a frontrunner for drum & bass.

3) Q Project - Champion Sound [Alliance Remix]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd6wlo9Gbkk
This easily could have been on my Jungle 5 for last week had I posted one.

4) Nu:Logic - New Technique
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgiLpht9gWk
Brothers Dan (Nu:Tone) and Matt (Logistics) make up Nu:Logic, and even though they parted ways in like '04, I guess they got back together last year to release an EP with this being the title track. Absolutely massive, and sounds very old school.

5) Aquasky - Orange Dust
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUFOQDt1G_M
Another classic. Pretty sure these guys haven't done much recently, but they used to crank out some absolutely huge tunes.

Some of my all time favorites from the greatest era of DnB DO NOT DISPUTE ME!

Ed Rush & Optical - Kerb Crawler
Slow build up and punchy drums really made this one a favorite of mine. I really like all of Ed and Op's early stuff (maybe better)but this track really said "Ok, we're going to take over in 2000 too". I loved to overlap the bass intro with the previous track and cut it out for the break. Great for live shows. This is, simply, drums and bass.

Bad Company - Planet Dust
Really, if you haven't heard this, go listen to it. One of the best classic tunes from around the 2000 era. Intro is a little weak, but who cares? You're mixing anyway, right? Guaranteed to slay any audience. Got overplayed and lost some ground, now a solid classic. If you can find the vinyl you are lucky, Prototype had few pressings.

Twisted Individual - Rusty Sheriff's Badge
I had a bit of a love/hate with Twisted as his career went one, but everything that came out around his big album release was pretty golden to me. The EPs and singles on grid are classics to me, now. Rusy Sheriff's Badge is probably my favorite song by him. Great build up and drops like a bomb. I was never one to hate on or love 'wobble', but this song does all sorts of right with 'wobble bass'. Made famous in the youtube videos of church members dancing around.

Undercover Agent - Five Tones (Brockie Rmx)
Going older with this one, but one of the first tunes I heard when I went to a 'rave party' in high school. I left early because the people made me sick and the music was pretty rotten, but the small room had some local DnB djs and this is one of the tracks they played. It's always stuck with me and is a decent roller, nothing special except nostalgia. Still, one of my older favs. Still can't find this one on vinyl, either.

Red One - Strangled Duck (Origin Unknown Rmx)
I looked for this vinyl for almost 6 years before I got my hands on the EP. Still a rocking roller from an artist who I never heard much from. One of the early early Ram team, but rarely put out much on the EPs. This one is a classic roller that people never see coming. Drop it live an check out how it goes down, especially after the break.

Five Favourite Tunes From "21" By Marcus Intalex

Celestial Navigation (feat. S.P.Y.) - One of those uplifting feel-good tunes that S.P.Y. is sometimes brilliant at making.
Make Way (feat. DRS) - I always enjoy this type of album closer, a fairly retrospective tune that builds up to a "crescendo".
Dusk - Standard chilled fare. Not on YouTube so hopefully people can make do with SoundCloud. Also not strictly dnb but hey.
Meltdown (feat. Calibre)
Hot Hands
The last two are definitely growers that I have no idea how to describe.

If this was a more general thread I'd have included From The Ashes as well. It's strange really, I don't find it to be a particularly remarkable album (aside from Celestial Navigation) yet I still really like it.

Friday Five tunes from producers you probably don't know.

Rene LaVice - Genesis [Stride Recordings]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V3LhrlvG6k
Stride doesn't get enough love in the DnB community. They're the only exclusive Canadian-only DnB label but they have a great lineup of producers, including Mr LaVice (AKA Vice LaVice).

Sum (AKA Sumone) - Energy Crust [iQ Entertainment]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54_CJUhsxTc
This one might be cheating since I know there's some jungle cats in here, but for the most part Sumone goes pretty unnoticed. Absolutely massive jungle. Snares all up in yo' rear end. He's also local to Indianapolis. :)

Amit - Snake Pit [L Plates]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWqBDg-tTPk
Amit's fairly well known, but I think his work is lost in the newer generation of dnb, which I think qualifies him in this list. This is the definition of a driving bassline.

The Ego & DJ Roots f/ Ill Esha - Universe [Blu Saphir]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJIuhiDRptk
Pure Brazilian liquid DnB. DJ Roots was one of the reasons I got into Drum and Bass in the first place. Alas, he never really followed up his success, but if you can get your hands on one of his releases, DO IT.

Marginal - Employee of the Month [Broken Audio]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj3EA6y0Ayo
One of the latest artists I've been getting into lately. I like the mixed drum patterns with the simplicity of a minimal tune. Real nice growly bassline on this one as well.

Friday 5: Choose your own Adventure Edition

I chose the "Hot New poo poo" adventure.

"Louder (Drumsound & Bassline Smith Remix)" - DJ Fresh feat. Sian Evans. (Heard this on the last couple Drum & Bass Arena Podcasts and it's definitely worthy of "Banger" status! Excellent Remix right here!)

"War Machine" - Reso. (Motherfuckin' RESO! Homeboy definitely stepped his Drum & Bass game up...especially since I thought his other one, "Mindgames" was lacking.)

"Tap Ho" - TC. (Heard this on the most recent Drum & Bass Arena Podcast...definitely hits the spot.)

"Beautiful" - Brookes Brothers feat. Robert Owens. (This is definitely gonna be a new "windows down, music up, sun shinin'" anthem for me. Holy poo poo, this is so smooth!)

"Lie & Blood" - Freqax. (Sorry it's a clip from the latest Barcode Filthcast, but it's the only upload for it, and it's a heavy hitter for sure!)

Mix of old and new for me

Vertigo - The Drained
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH5x1wNAdHM
This is my favorite dnb tune. The bass is massive and those bleeps get me everytime.

Source Direct - Black Domina
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZswz4mmusw
I'm one of those weird idiots who likes Source Direct more than Photek, this tune is why.

Fracture & Neptune - Tape Frog
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tzu2LMpG7R8
Simple breaks and mashed up 808 kicks, wins every time.

System - Observation Point
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2MslMzUdpY
One of my favorites for a while. Minimal roller with a growling bassline. The drums in this are just amazing.

Alix Perez - The Observer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Opl1MKr6HWc
My favorite Alix Perez tune. The sub is just too deep. I love the dreary techno atmosphere of most of his recent stuff.

Friday Five: tunes what i have just got.

Connecta & DNK - Wolves
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuRgpkq1FaA&feature=related
Not usually into jump up at all, but this sounded great on the system in the shop so I grabbed the 12", the intro does sound like hes just jammed a load of movie samples in it though.

Serum & Bladerunner - Gunshots
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ashITTREG9A
Big, Big tune. Probably not new at all but ive only just found it, nice driving bassline on this one, this was the flip to Snakefist, which is good aswell, really dark sounding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhjGw4H-17M&feature=related

S.P.Y. - A.S.B.O.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jnl_EumKXX4
S.P.Y. has tunes for days, and this one is no different.

Commix - Belleview (dBridge Belle-Reviewed Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYoKmAu9bhU
Stunning production on this one, as always from dbridge. The synth that comes in after the second drop just completes it.

Alix Perez - Forsaken (feat Peven Everett and Spectrasoul)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj9sJarhkeU
Finally got around to listening to 1984 and I'm pretty glad that I did, this is by far my favorite from the album.

Just to clarify for everyone, each vinyl release comes with a food recipe written by the artists who made the tracks. Haha I'm gonna try and make skeptical's tuna steak & herb mash at some point...

Yeah theyve got a compilation called "Ingredients Recipe Book Volume 1" coming out on the 6th of june, I think theres 15 tracks on the CD and they're doing 4 seperate 1x12" releases for the LP. There are some awesome tracks on there, will definitely feature a couple in my five!

As a taster this is the A side of the first 1x12"

Wow, ok. You can have it. (I would have put it a little earlier)

Haha, it doesn't matter if we overlap a bit. Feel free to put in a few tunes from any era, showcasing more music can't be a bad thing! :)

Out of curiosity, when would you have put the turning point? X-Ray for me heralded more synthy stuff and less rollery stuff.

Ram is without a doubt the best around in my book. But Viper Recordings is right up there with it. The fact is that they just produce quite different Drum and Bass. Sub Focus is probably one of my favorite producers, but he does different work from people like Matrix & Futurebound.

If I don't let you guys down with Viper, then you guys can't let me down on Ram. :)

I'd put it around the time they started releasing the new Ram Raiders EPs. The 4, 5 an 6 ones, or maybe the new singles like Beastman and Huggy Bear. That was the big turning point for me, but it's all relative.
