How many Championships?
My family (kids age 9,4) and my buddies family (kids age 4,1) have rented a place in Orlando for a week (Nov. 7-14). We were thinking about spending 2 days at Disney at some point (probably a day each at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom). The whole thing is kind of overwhelming to me at this point. Is it possible to have a casual experience at Disney? Since the trip isn't dedicated to Disney is it even worth going? Do you have to basically pre plan everything or can you buy some tickets online and go? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can still go and have fun. Take a look online at what’s at each park - lots of exploration can be done at AK with no real need for prior planning (flight of passage may be out of the question but everything else can be manageable). Go be a kid at Magic Kingdom and just take it all in. You can be casual and it’s still okay.

I'm thinking of planning a trip to orlando early next year to hit up disney world and universal studios. Since I've heard great things about the AKL and love animals in general I want to spend some time there but from the map it looks really out of the way. Would my best bet be to spend a day there, then switch to one of the monorail hotels for the rest of my stay? Or is the distance from AKL to everything else not as bad as it looks?

It's not that bad. An extra five or ten minutes on the bus.

Just got back from our Disney World and Caribbean cruise honeymoon.

It was my wife's first time to Disney World, and my first time in 20+ years (I remember playing Sonic Spinball on Sega Genesis at Innoventions last time I was there; Animal Kingdom and Test Track were still under construction).

Everything was really great. Had some Dole Whip, went to the Be Our Guest dinner, paid too much for bite-sized snacks at the Food & Wine festival. All the things people recommended eight months ago when I came in here clueless. You people know what you're talking about.

The cruise on the Oasis of the Seas that Braksgirl recommended and set up for us was also amazing. It was our first cruise, and we knew it was a big ship, but were both still shocked at just how big it was. We were still finding whole restaurants we hadn't noticed before on the last day of the trip.

It's not so far out of the way to make me not stay there, but if your budget allows for a monorail hotel for the entirety of your stay, I would definitely do that instead. I just really enjoy the convenience of the monorail.

Depends on how much you care about extra bus ride time to Magic Kingdom and using the monorail. If you stay at AKL or Kidani there’s not much reason to use the boats or the monorail.

1) We live in Denmark, so I only own one pair of shorts.
2) I wore the shorts on one day, and it felt like my phone was constantly about to fall out of my pocket.
3) It wasn't particularly hot and we were in air-conditioned buildings fairly often, so I didn't really notice it.

I'd do it again. No regrets.

Fair enough. I’ve worn jeans at Disney in October and immediately regretted it. However, it does get fairly chilly here (50s, maybe 40s) in November and January, so it’s a good idea then.

14 days until I go back! Can’t wait.

Yes, that was the one we were on. Haiti, Jamaica, and Cozumel. We both really liked it. We're considering a Mediterranean or Baltic cruise at some point. I think a week is about max for us, though. We were ready to be done with it by the end.

Where were you guys? We were on deck 8, forward starboard, near the Central Park area.

Hah, we were deck 8 forward starboard too. Small world.

Yeah it didn't help that about day 3 I started getting sick. Definitely put a damper on things. We did the zipline in Haiti, don't feel like I need to do that one again though it was cool. Ocean horseback riding in Jamaica and Chichen Itza in Cozumel were both awesome though. We're getting married in Jamaica in May so it was nice to see the country.

Our biggest thing was remembering not to cut through Deck 4 on the way to dinner to avoid going through the casino. I liked having Central Park right there.

Were you the guy that lost a hat while on the zipline? Because I had been considering going for a walk at just that moment, so I fetched it out of the water and brought it to the bottom of the zipline, but whoever owned it wasn't there, so I just left it on the post by the stairs. Hopefully the hat and owner (possibly you) were reunited.

Nope! We kept all of our hats. No loss, we won them at "Majority Rules".

I'm pumping some of my old Studios friends to see if they've heard anything about JTA. I'm sure they'll be bringing it back in some form, it's insanely popular. I'm just bitter I was too old by the time they came up with it to participate, jerks.

EDIT: It looks like the rep who announced it misspoke, JTA is leaving DLR but not WDW.

How difficult is it to book a split stay between hotels? It seems from the website it isn’t straightforward to do this other than booking two reservations back to back and I might be losing some discounts. Anyone have experience?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but:

You would have to set up two different reservations. You could buy park tickets separately so that you get a discount for buying more days at the park, but you’d be losing out on package discounts, if available( such as the magic your way deal). I don’t think it’s possible in Disney’s system to set up one reservation for two different hotel stays, even if they are back to back.

An observation from this trip: the halloween party nights seem to create pent up demand for non halloween party nights at MK. Yesterday was insane at MK all day. There were 3 or 4 torrential downpours throughout the day, a couple lasted for 20+ minutes but they did nothing to deter the crowds. By 30 minutes before Happily Ever After I overheard cast members saying the hub and main street were at capacity, the only remaining fireworks viewing was in front of the train station. They let us backstage by Casey’s to exit the park/get to fireworks viewing.

This is correct. Split stays are going to be extra complicated come next week. Disney is changing the ticket set up to be date based. So what you would do in the past is set up the first reservation at the first hotel as the package, with your tickets and dining and such, and then the tickets would be good for 14 days from the first day of use. The second reservation would be just a room only, or even a ticketless package with room and dining. But they're changing the tickets come next week so that you'd have to buy tickets based on the days of your room stay and it's all very weird. The tickets will actually expire on a particular date because you have to tell Disney which days you'll be using them. You will no longer be able to buy an open ended ticket.

Is this change going to fix the Throwaway Room loophole people use to get FP+ and Dining Reservations?

Only magic kingdom, but both magic kingdom and Hollywood studios offer an early morning access package on certain days of the week with access to specific rides before the park opens. It also includes breakfast.

I have done After Hours twice, and like Cais said imo its the best money you can spend. I got virtually all rides done by 11:45pm or so. Got more done in 3ish hours than a usual park day. Big Thunder operator let me just stay in my seat for as long as I wanted. The only line I really had was mine train which was maybe 4 minutes. Did mine train 3 times. If you can swing it, make it your MK day if you have been before.
