"Go on until you're stopped."
I mostly wish I could use touch controls to zoom in and out while playing on the Surface. I was unable to form a cult my first go round because the "start a cult" tile appeared offscreen without my realizing it, and the touchpad is imperfect.

This game is basically made to play on a tablet; so I'm surprised that functionality isn't built-in.

I didnt even realize that you could zoom at first (on pc), and I spent an unreasonable amount of time squinting at the tiny text on the screen.

Cultist Simulator is pretty good, it is very much a plate spinning game and if you are playing safe it is a very slow but steady game, but its entertaining for what it is.

I definitely need to write down some of the game logic because there is a whole cycle of transforming stuff into the right kind of stuff by mixing A with B so B can become C and so on.

I think it's deceptive, due to all the timers spinning down around you, because my impression so far is that it's a game about creating a cursed lineage that eventually produces all the conditions needed to lovecraft up the whole world. Is that not your experience? (I only played for an hour last night).

It's kind of hard for me to say because I'm still trying to decode some of the systems. Each new failure/win state does produce more kinds of starting conditions, yes.

I say it's a slow burn because at the start you should be focusing on accumulating the stat cards through work and books, followed by lore. Cultists don't really become useful until you have a good base supply, then you can start really going for it.

A few mechanical tips that are technically spoilers. Most of the game is about discovering this stuff.

- There is a chain of alteration to change your lore into the right lore, write it down. NEVER transform your last lore of a type or you will break this chain.
- Health is the most important stat in the game, hardest to get and the easiest to lose.
- Grab a card to see where it can be put. Click on an empty card space in a window to highlight what cards can go in that slot.
- Use cards in any slot that they fit in. Also try cards in different orders, because sometimes both can fit in a slot but one has to follow the other (for example, play the translate card before the book to translate)
- The type of lore a character has defines their abilities.
- Cults can only use one type of lore, depending on what you start it with.
- A candle below a card window means the card will be consumed.
- Go slow. It's a marathon, not a race. Most negative stats fade over time.

Unfortunately it doesn't do much of the trademark Fallen London speak that is so cool, or at least at the level I have seen.

Which is a big shame! I loved phrases like "we were kind, our knives were sharp" when you ate someone in Sunless Sea or whatever.

I think it's good, but I was also feeling kind of harried by all the counters and the text was so small, so I wasn't able to really concentrate (there is a pause function, as well as a zoom, apparently, that I should be using, so that might change the experience a little).

My favorite theory so far is that I could maybe make an extremely boring man who is really dedicated to his job, is plagued by weird dreams that he ignores, then dies of old age after a lifetime of accumulating wealth.

There is a lot of text on events and cards so it's definitely a good idea to pause the game a lot to read things and plan what to do next.

Another QoL cultist sim tip, dont stack cards that exhaust like stat ones, lay them out in rows. Then when you "collect all" them they will automatically return to the rows without throwing your board into disarray

It's pretty good, but it's hard to recoup resources. I could do most of the individual stories well enough, but trying to do a couple in a run usually ended swiftly after starting the second. Not sure if it's a balancing issue, there were ways to recover I was missing out on or I just needed to git gud, but it was fun for an evening

This actually looks super good. There’s mention that it was playable at PAX and some other smaller cons, will see if I can dig up some impressions of it.

Edit: spoilers for what’s in the pax demo
https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/8ol1rw/comment/e0740ef?st=JI3HADTE&sh=54870b0b

quote:

I played this game at Pax East. Unsure where I was in the demo, but it controls exactly like resident evil 2, similar UI and similar way of looking at points of interest. When a point of interest is nearby, there's sort of bracket crosshairs that zoom in on it. When you look at a point of interest, sometimes its in a first person view like with a puzzle, pushing levers or something. In the demo, I made my way out of a crashed ship. The crew was dead, I played as the girl in the trailer who is an android of some type. After making my way out of the ship I wandered a few screens and there was a cave, so I crawled down into it and inside it had a radio, a desk, a bookshelf, like some sort of secret base or something but with a old timey vibe to it. On the desk was the book "The King in Yellow". I took the book, and then the screen started freaking out (I guess I read the book?) and there was a lot of flickering with words scrawled across the screen. Then, there seemed to be a lot of programming errors and the "system" shut down.

After a few seconds, it rebooted. Basically it looked like you were looking through the eyes of the android person and they suffered a fatal system error and restart. When the character woke back up, was in a different area underground, and things that I read would show their text but after a couple of seconds some of the letters would move almost imperceptibly to the point that the some of the words may have changed, I'm not sure. One of those "out of the corner of your eyes" type of things. From what I could gather walking around the underground bunker, it looked like it was a mining operation, but they discovered something else was deep underground that had been there a long time. They weren't sure. Shortly after, some of the crew started being more aggressive, and there were a lot more arguments. One person was caught stealing, so they put them in the holding cell. Things started to break down, but I don't know anything else about it. I found a few puzzles, and was working on finding a set of key cards to open the next cell block. There were several lovecraftian poem references that I can't recall off the top of my head, but as someone familiar with that sort of thing, nothing that I could recognize offhand.

Game looked pretty cool, I'm a fan of RE2 so yeah. Looks promising.
