Sony's film division is a comedy of errors. I even liked the new Ghostbusters, but they're hitting singles when they need a home run.

I thought it was ok when I saw it. I believe I remember saying that of the five movies I had seen so far that year it was solid at number 3.

I'm not making any comments about the film's actual quality, but it did not do nearly as well as expected, and Sony was pinning all their hopes on it. They wanted this to be the new franchise that rivals the MCU or whatever. Paul Feige said in an interview that the movie needed to make at least 500 million to break even, because of high marketing costs. It obviously did not.

Sockser posted:More than halfway through 2015, Sony barely is hanging on at the box office. The studio has fallen to seventh place in domestic market share — behind the five other majors and Lionsgate — with a mere $247 million in grosses, just 3.74 percent of the total pie. Globally, Sony has made a weak $564 million. (By comparison, leader Universal Pictures has pulled in $1.8 billion domestically and more than $5 billion worldwide.) As its peers all have released at least one film that has earned $300 million worldwide, Sony’s highest-grossing movie, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, topped out at only $104 million. Its latest attempt to create a homegrown tentpole, Adam Sandler's Pixels, isn’t reversing that downward trajectory. And unfortunately, Sandler bolted on Sony and is now inflicting himself on our Netflix accounts.

According to Netflix, those Sandler movies are some of their most popular content. So if idiots with terrible taste want to subsidize my Marvel shows for wise people with impeccable taste, hell I'm fer it.

Iron Fist wasn't godawful, but it was definitely flawed and easily the worst of the Netflix shows. I'd like to think it's salvageable and will get a good second season.

Just got back from seeing it and I can say with a straight face this is one of the best superhero movies I've seen. You shouldn't expect it to introduce anything new to the genre, but do expect it to be a extremely well put together movie, great pacing, spot on casting and full of WW just wrecking the poo poo out of dudes. There's just so much to say about how well constructed this movie is compared to a lot of other superhero movies but something that needs emphasizing is just how little "stupidity" occurs in this movie. You know the thing where your yelling at people on screen to not do something, wondering why they're doing something, or unnecessary drama ala "THERE'S NO TIME TO EXPLAIN", nope little to non of that here. In this the plot flows naturally from the situation, people are reasonable, good guys are reasonable, even government idiots are relatively reasonable. And something else that was nice was that there wasn't any of the eye rolling "I'm a girl, we're strong too" Black Widow moments. WW just shows up and just kicks everyone's rear end and guys go oh poo poo she crazy, then done, no dwelling by the characters on how it's a girl doing this. The action is also tight and weighty, with very visceral punches even with the CGI mixed in. I'm honestly not doing a good job at describing the movie cause I suck at it but I can answer questions if you guys have any.

Bah, my local (good*) cinema doesn't have any showings at a convenient time until the Saturday. *I actually have a cinema right across the road from where I work but it's so loving terrible I wouldn't go there if it was free, hell I probably wouldn't go if they paid me. Next nearest cinema I actually want to visit is about an hour away, where I actually do have free tickets, but that's beside the point.

Not entirely (this 'fresh' review, for example, doesn't really come over as a ringing endorsement - "Wonder Woman is a decent but bland addition to the genre that truly shines only in comparison to the rotten DCEU movies so far") but in the main there's certainly more than enough grounds to be feeling optimistic. And the dude who wrote theGrauniad's review seemed mostly put out because he finds the idea of a superhero film set in WWI distasteful so eh.
