Bloody Hedgehog posted:Wait, what did Rossman do? Full Chud conversion? Bumhole toucher? Tore one of those mattress tags off? I have watched very little of him, but I believe it's him being a small business tyrant, constantly complaining about NYC taxes and then during COVID started to do lots of stuff complaining about the homeless in NYC. Also some anti vax stuff and publicly claiming his business wouldn't comply with what he claimed was NYC mandating vaccines for business (?????). Then he moved to NH for his freedoms. Probably full on libertarian brainworms on the treadmill to right wing psycho. Basically he's only right about right to repair issues and I assume everything else he believes is a poo poo show. And even the right to repair stuff is very self centered because he needs a part supply and pairing tools to repair Apples products, what I assume was previously his most profitable repair work. waffle iron fucked around with this message at 02:29 on May 11, 2024 |

I think the things this thread has recently been down on about GN videos are gonna help keep Rossman under control for Asus part 2. Sure, but his opinion, at least in the older videos I’ve seen of his, is that he hates Apple for making his job harder but also is glad they’re so anti-consumers because it gives him an endless supply of customers.

I don't think there's any issue with believing companies should make parts and knowledge available for repair shops or technical consumers while also being thankful that modern popular electronics are so complex that most users don't have the ability or tools to repair them. It's not just Apple products either. Most modern electronics don't have easily serviceable components because consumer expectations for size and performance don't allow them to exist. You want removable cell phone batteries again? Prepare for bulkier phone with lower capacity batteries, and no more wireless charging. You want user replaceable ram in a laptop? It's going to be slower, thicker, and heavier. That's just the reality of modern consumer electronics.

I'd be okay with all of this if in exchange I could just pop over to the best buy and replace the battery of my 5+ year old phone, and probably most people would be too. Very few people care about the thinness of their electronics beyond the initial purchase high of "look how small it is." Rossman's pet issue is an important one, but him championing it is purely in his own self interest. Any time he opens his mouth on any other topic its pure libertarian/socially conservative vomit. Not that any of that will matter in his GN appearance, and because he's the single loudest voice on right to repair and consumer protections in the US there's really no one else to bring on as a topic expert. But every time a youtuber brings him on I know I can skip that video and miss nothing.

The speed impact on ram has only been a problem very recently, and there's a new standard to fix it (LPCAMM2). The companies that don't offer these features really exaggerate the downsides.

MKBHD seems to have hit a bit of a turn starting with some subliminals in his Cybertruck review (implying its design might age like the PT Cruiser is as heavy a shot as he can fire given he's owed a free car from Tesla,) which then amped up into dunks on Fisker and Vinfast, and also on both of the AI pin scams. Add the recent Apple skepticism to the mix and even poking at Google's price tiers for their phones, and well, if only because tech seems to be kind of plateauing and so chasing gimmicks and artificial segmentation, he's getting a bit more of a critical edge. It's a nice development to see.

Oh I didn’t watch his recent car reviews, Vinfast was getting just destroyed by everybody. I like the savagegeese guys for car reviews, they’re a little performance biased but seem to give good reviews to stuff that is decidedly not performance oriented too. It’s funny watching them drive the hell out of things that were never meant to be driven that way.

priznat posted:Oh I didn’t watch his recent car reviews, Vinfast was getting just destroyed by everybody. The fun part with MKBHD's experience with the Fisker and the Vinfast was first he reviews the Fisker, says it's the worst thing he's ever reviewed and the company seemed shady in the way they were dealing with him, wanting him to hold a review until they could do an on site software update. Car heads and Fisker stans in the comments say "nuh uh, the Vinfast is worse," so he gets that on loan, test drives it for a week just like he did with the Fisker, reviews it and basically says "yeah, this is pretty bad too, but Fisker still has the edge for worst thing I've reviewed to date" This then results in a second Fisker review after a software update that had to be done with an on-site technician, and he basically came back with "still bad, too little too late." Now he just seems way more willing to point out when something isn't delivering after all that. Ultraklystron fucked around with this message at 23:23 on May 13, 2024 |

That’s pretty cool, glad he feels he can just stick to his guns. So much of the reviews are totally subjective (the top gear reviews were more entertainment than actual review and they would just trash stuff) and if he had waffled then that’d be it for his car reviews I would think.

Most interesting part of it was that the current version of Unreal Tournament still has 3dfx support for some reason.
