Newbie newbness! Two more level 5 heroes. Alarak - Won 3 of the 6 games it took me to get him to level 5. Honestly, I had a tough time with him. His discord strike can definitely hit hard, but I found melee with him to often be a dangerous proposition given his lack of mobility. I am honestly not really sure how to play him well. I mainly picked talents that buffed up discord strike. For the ult I usually went counter-strike, which seemed workable. I haven't really done all that well with any melee assassins, to be honest. Melee seems like a dangerous place to be unless you are very tanky or have reliable escapes. Uther - Won 2 of the 6 games it took me to get to level 5. I seemingly can't win as Uther. I typically picked hammer of justice related talents, since stunning enemies seems like a good thing. I typically went for the divine storm ult, for more stunning. I found everything he did to absolutely suck his mana down like mad though, more than any other character I've played. I was constantly hearthing back for mana, so it is definitely possible I was doing something wrong. Overall, I like that he can stun, but I couldn't really figure out how to play him effectively as a support. I felt like I would just run out of healjuice. I have around half of the cast leveled to 5 at this point. So far, I haven't found myself connecting much with most of the assassins or supports. I like Falstad and Butcher when it comes to assassins, but that is about it. None of the supports have really grabbed my interest too much. Of the supports I've played I probably like Stukov the most, even if I haven't found much success with him. I have enjoyed playing warriors a lot, with Diablo, ETC, and Stitches in the lead. I spent 10,000 gold today buying Cho-Gall, so I could share the fun with another new player friend of a friend. We had some good times tonight. I do love the character, and find it is amusing how games can turn as the levels go up and you get more and more bomb stacks. Runic blast eventually starts chunking enemy heroes, along with the silence. He is definitely one of my absolute favorite characters to play, and Cho is now my second highest leveled character behind Diablo. I will probably spend 7,000 on Falstad tomorrow to add him to my roster, as I would like to keep him even after he leaves the free rotation. Managed to pull out a win on an otherwise lost dragonshire game today with the power of Falstad's mobility. Filthy Monkey fucked around with this message at 09:00 on Dec 31, 2017 |

For Alarak and escapes, his telekinesis works on himself and self-casting it shoves you in the direction you're moving. You're right that he is definitely more of a hit and run character though. As Uther you have to resist the urge to top people off until you finish your level 1 quest and get a big discount on whichever heal. Sindai fucked around with this message at 08:07 on Dec 31, 2017 |

I’ve been playing Alarak a fair bit lately, he’s really fun. Normally you use your Telekinesis to move them into your discord strike, that is his main combo, but TK can be self cast to move you in the direction you are facing as an escape. You can also use it to peel for a team member by shoving enemies away from them, shoving dudes into allied attacks like Mosh Pit or Dragonstrike, shoving yourself into fights if you’re feeling reckless. Alarak snowballs pretty hard as his trait increases his ability damage to enemy heroes, and you can increase Sadism by getting takedowns or through a few of your talents. If you manage to pull off one of your “hit 3” talent quests early you get a mad power spike and can just hard clown during the early game.

I tried out Alarak today and I'm terrible with him. The build I was following favoured his lightning strike, and I never found myself doing much damage with it. I haven't figure out any of the quickcast stuff yet, and found manually aiming his telekinesis during a fight to be very difficult. I guess he is labeled 'hard to play' for a reason for us newbs. I also tried out Tassadar today. I like his shield and his escape. Even when I used a storm focused build I never found it doing much damage. Not too bad for lane clearing though, and not hard to finish the quest to increase its range and power. Archon is pretty cool.

I'm far from an Alarak master so grain of salt and all but you aren't really ever going to do a lot of damage with his lightning strike ability, it's there for long range poke as well as a bit of health return. Like yeah, you can talent into it and get some neat bonuses, but Alarak's main source of damage is going to be his melee-range stuff. The trick with the lightning is you use it to poke when you don't feel like getting up close, and remember that you hit every enemy that the lightning passes "through" which amplifies its healing, so it gives you a nice bit of bonus sustain during fights where people are grouped together like over objectives. Otherwise you really do need to get good with the TK/Discord combo because that's where most of your actual damage is going to come from.

From what I've seen of good Alarak play, of which I am not capable, he really excels if you can pick a target at 2/3 health and pull them in with E for a combo. His lightning is funny in that it does more damage to enemies between the target you clicked on and you.

On Gazlowe - I just ignore death lazor for the most part, particularly since with robo gob and the upgrade at 20 he auto attacks for 685 iirc and gets up to 50% damage reduction on his r. Early game I just try to hang back by gates, stack the turret quest, and merc when I can (can only do hard camps around 10-13). He gets absurd if the enemy leaves you alone to stack your trait, which seems common at my bad tier. But if they keep rotating on you or if they have a spike mage/nova in lane vs you, it can get immensely frustrating.

This is Grubby’s standard build https://psionic-storm.com/en/calculateur-de-talents/gazlowe/4-1-2-1-3-2-1/ Not sure if a specialist main like Glogan builds differently though.

He's been playing Gazlowe in HL recently with almost that same build but with Grav-O-Bomb for wombo combos. I don't know if the real combo build goes Break It Down at 1 or not but it works still. Goblin repairs is a stand-in for survivability in place of Robo Gobbo. https://clips.twitch.tv/LitigiousPowerfulSnakeShazBotstix

Stitches stitches stitches. When should I be going anything other than full slam? I find that as full slam I actually put a surprising amount of hero damage on the board, thanks to the area. Fishing hook always tempts me, with its wonderful longness, but thus far I have mostly resisted its siren song and stuck with pulverize. When going full tank stitches, what do people think of hungry for more vs dampen magic? I assume the pick is based on the enemy team composition? Tank stitches damage is so bad though. I guess I could take fishing hook without feeling guilty there.

I just had the most hilarious game playing Murky against a team with a Butcher on it, which is always a worst-case scenario for Murky...you have to be extremely conscientious about dying so you don't turbocharge the Butcher early and let him steamroll your team. Normally for Murky I like to go with melee-oriented slime stuff, Time to Krill and Toxic Buildup, but with a Butcher in the mix I went for max kiting with the bubble talents, extra slime radius, and Living the Dream. I actually feel pretty bad that guy because he didn't kill me all game. He tried though, I'll give him that, but every charge got interrupted by a bubble, he got slowed by slime, and then our Kael'thas would rotate down and blow him up.

I had a game like that with a Murky vs Butcher as Chromie; I kept putting time traps between our Murky and their Butcher, and he'd inevitably try to charge one of us and nope, get frozen in time, rear end in a top hat. Murky + Chromie burst is real.

Slam stitches is good because it makes you play up front more and being up front gets the most out of tanking for your team. Stitches is really a hero you have to draft or pick around, because he's best when he's intercepting shots meant for squishies like Kael'thas and isolating individual targets for your team to lock down and blow away, like Kael'thas can do. Stitches and Kael'thas are a really good combo but Kerrigan and Malf/Uther are also good with him.

If it's memory problems (should be easy to tell by looking at task manager while playing) dropping texture quality is more likely to help than rendering resolution, since textures make up the majority of a game's memory usage. Closing web browsers should help even more, of course, since they tend to eat several gigabytes these days.

Yeah, I confirmed RAM is maxed with task manager before I bitched. Before Hanzo patch: lowest settings, stuttered with Blizz launcher up, fine as long as I closed that Now: still lowest settings, stutters every other game even after closing launcher, chrome, Dropbox, other background poo poo. Something changed with the game. Perhaps the camera change tipped the scales but my bottom line is "time to buy new RAM"

I was having random lag spikes and after some googling I found two things that seemed to have helped. 1.) Go to settings in the blizzard client itself, and make sure the streaming option is turned off (apparently this was reenabled in a recent patch). 2.) Go to settings in the blizzard client itself, and under game settings launch the game in 32-bit mode. Doing both of these things has eliminated most of my issues. I do run into the occasional GPU spike...

Funny thing, I can't recall ever having a non-lag-related problem with HotS but at least 1 out of 3 D3 sessions starts memory leaking something fierce.

Uninstalling and reinstalling HOTS can also clean out garbage files that are no longer in use, which can sometimes be erroneously referenced by the game and cause stuttering.

So, now you have an unused firewall exception for every old patch. And for those of us with per-application mouse/keybinds, we have to reset those every patch.
