Big boom. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Mount_Hood_(AE-11)#Disaster quote:The largest remaining piece of the hull was found in the trench and measured no bigger than 16 by 10 feet (5 by 3 m). No other remains of Mount Hood were found except fragments of metal which had struck other ships in the harbor and a few tattered pages of a signal notebook found floating in the water several hundred yards away. No human remains were recovered of the 350 men aboard Mount Hood or small boats loading alongside at the time of the explosion.

Just think about the insanity of it, of even being near one outside of combat. An Armistice day thing to think about.

Erm, I found their carriers. ALL their carriers..... This is a bit less prestigious. Truk's airfield is hammered, but the Richelieu is not looking good! At least one carrier can get it's CAP up – there were just to many to shoot! Their air-strikes are ineffective. A strike on Rabaul is deflected. That was an interesting day – but did we get any kills? I'm not sure I believe the CVE, we didn't hit them that hard. Let's have another go!

What's the Truk battery consisted of? 43 hits is quite a lot if they're full 14 or 15 cm coastal guns.

The historical treatises are going to be something, alright. Naval doctrine is going to be focused on battleships forever; as plane ranges get longer they'll just add missile cells or something.

That may well be, but good grief you have to admire the ability of the Mutsu’s crew - not manning the subtlest ship, honestly - to get within punching distance of six light carriers, even at night, without a 1944 US task force presumably fully tooled up with radar cottoning on. Obligatory “how in the hell Grey” reaction goes here!

11 November 1944 Four Japanese destroyers—Hamanami, Naganami, Shimakaze, and Wakatsuki—sunk by carrier aircraft while escorting a troop convoy to Leyte from Manila. Also lost were two minesweepers, W-30 and W-22.

I'm horrifyingly terrified to see if the Alaska class BC's get deployed in numbers here. Also somehow Grey has gotten BB's into carriers again. Words that this world will not blink at saying. ... So, theoretically is the IJA or IJN doing better in this timeline when it comes to being total jerks to one another?

The IJA had an absolutely incredible victory in China that probably exceeds all the naval victories combined.
