So barring her taking medications to lower her heart rate (beta blockers), thumbs up to her for being awesome and fit! Caffeine can elevate heart rate, so that's why it goes up a bit after drinking coffee. [/nurse]

Unrelated: my most recent Bonavita kettle croaked. Any better electric kettles with temp control out there? Nothing obscenely expensive, though. I'm not buying an artisanal kettle blessed by the Pope or anything - $100-150 is probably my budget.

If you have a costco membership the Stagg EKG kettles are going for $120 online.

Yeah in know that in principle a low heart rate signifies that it's working strong. I was making the corner half in jest; her heart rate has been so low at times that we were worries, while at the same time she was fighting with exhaustion and mental health. Shotting 20g in the morning really kicks her butt in all the places I wish it'd do for me too (and psychopharmaceuticals also help a bit, I guess).

I do, but it wouldn't arrive for almost 2 weeks. Express shipping puts it up there with Amazon prices.

Doing some cocaine will bump that heart rate up as well

I ended up ordering the OXO last night and somehow it showed up this morning? Good lord.

I'm definitely interested to see what you think of the Stagg when you get it, it's on my watch list now in case the OXO doesn't work.

Does anybody have suggested brew ratios and grind size for a Kyoto drip tower?

I'm doing a swap with my espresso machine for one to tinker with. I'll work on manual lever stuff again in the future but it's very fiddly and messy and I don't have the right space setup for it at the moment, so clearly the answer is a very fragile but nice looking giant coffee tower of glass. I'd like to make coffee in a concentrated form that i can drink over ice diluted with milk or reheated with hot water. I have experience with cold brew from a french press but nothing with this new doohickey.

I've been using Bottomless at the shop for a few years now, because it's crucial that we don't run out; was using Mistobox before that though and was perfectly happy with them.

Edit: My Bottomless referral code, 4 free bags and counting! https://www.bottomless.com/referral/xgirx83o

Bottomless. And, if you decide to do it, get a referral code from one of us here, it'll help you and the subscriber.

They haven't left me without coffee yet, and I have my sub set to freshest beans possible which can cause a day of no beans.

What's your objective for it? If you're looking to discover new coffees, then there are many, but if you're looking for specific things like expanding your palate, then Angel's Cup is good since you do blind taste tests with 3 sets at a time.

Trade has been somewhat hit or miss so I stopped my subscription from it after about half a year but has a nice site.

My very snooty light roast only coffee coworker has been using Mistobox or similar for the super-light roasts.

Personally now, I just use my local roaster's subscription service from Greater Goods. They also send me limited releases from time to time and I like their blends in general.

If you're looking for some kind of specific thing out of a subscription, it all comes down to what you're looking for and then going from there. I think if you don't know what you want yet.

https://www.wired.com/story/best-coffee-subscriptions/

Most, if not all subscriptions will allow for roast and/or grind to order and then ship usually via USPS. This also means fulfilment might be odd since they act as a go-between for their partner roasters and they only roast on certain days.

I've been using Craft Coffee for my subscription for months now and enjoy it a lot. Main reason being it's by far the cheapest at $7 per 12oz bag as long as you buy 4 bags at a time. While I think it's tasty coffee it's not amazing based on the different blends and single origins I tried. It's good coffee for the price. If you plan to try it out I also have a discount code but I think there's a couple other people here that use it too so if they have a code then share that.

What price point did you choose? $14 for the top seems really good. My local roaster just closed so I need something to take their place

Not sure if it was posted in this thread but Scott Rao posted an updated version of his method. It's nothing special but he does provide a decent solution to the draining issues that sometimes occur with a kalita which is to put a fine mesh strainer at the bottom of the brewer, beneath the paper.

We just switched to this and I'm liking it so far: https://cambercoffee.com/product/skyline-espresso/

I don't do the rotating selection any more mostly because I'm too busy at work to spend the time dialing in a new bag every week or so. We find something we like and stick with it until we feel like it's time for a change. Our last selection was something from Convoy; I try to keep it local since there's so much just in the PNW I still haven't tried.

Been using this method for a while now. Basically the same, except I use a V60 instead. Works really well, less time consuming than the 4:6.

Craft coffee

Thanks all! I’ve been exclusively buying beans from my local roaster for over a year, and it’s time to branch out. The roaster (Merit) has great stuff but at this point I’ve cycled through every roast they offer. We’re also expecting a baby within the next month, so a subscription does the dual purpose of expanding my selection of coffees and cuts down on trips out of the house.

My aunt says that she really likes coffee that comes from Peru. She just puts preground coffee in a drip pot and goes about her business. Can anybody recommend anything? I'm tempted to just grab her a local light roast that seems similar to some of the flavor profiles I'm reading about and letting her explore a little, but since it's a gift having the word "Peru" on the label would probably mean more to her.

There’s one at Tony’s Coffee I bought for my wife recently. Came in a bag with the word PERU in big letters. Medium roast, has some almonds to the profile, not a bad coffee for someone who doesn’t care overly about light roasts, but isn’t just a bag of burnt roast. Probably a decent choice for someone who doesn’t get finicky about light roast profiles and tea flavors and stuff.

I've seen whole bean Peruvian at Aldis (yeah I know, boo Aldis) so they might have preground also.

I’m fairly easy to please. Their core Andino (washed Colombian) hits my sweet spot.

Greater Goods looks great, but right now I’m leaning towards a 6-12 month subscription featuring multiple roasters so I can see what all fish are in this coffee sea.

I finally want to get rid of my cheapo 20€ blade "grinder" for a more decent model. I'm mostly using my Bialetti stovetop, but I want to branch out into trying drip and french press coffee. Will the Baratza encore be good enough for all these methods? I understand it doesn't grind espresso level coffee but the Bialetti needs a bit coarser than that no?

Ordered a Bezzera Matrix DE for the shop today; figured after ~10 years with a heavily-modded Silvia it was time for an upgrade. I'm not a big fan of the "giant chrome box with knobs" look that permeates so much of the prosumer world, so the extra bling plus volumetric dosing/pre-infusion and actively heated head instead of the traditional E61/lever combo was a big selling point. We're not currently set up for a plumbed-in machine but it'll be nice to have that option down the line too. We're already feeling the holiday crush so I hope it gets here soon; caffeinated techs are productive techs.
