This is why I prefer Tom Morello's approach to effects. Really amateur player like to wank over all the equipment they use. Morello take pride in how wide a range of sounds he can get from the fewest pedals possible. I think he used 5 pedals total for Battle of Los Angeles, and 2 guitars because a couple songs used an alternate tuning, yet he got crazy loving sound out of it. Ashes in the Fall, for example, or Born As Ghosts have a ton of interesting effects.

I can't find it right now but my favorite Gibson video is from a Japanese guy who apparently never even learned to tune guitars, but he saved up and bought a gold top. So he's in his tiny rear end studio apt somewhere in Japan trying to play along with something on the radio. He balding with a righteous comb-over and he starts sweating while he's playing and the comb-over starts to sag. It's kind of like those "Slash Shreds" videos only not funny except for the hair. It was so bad there were comments from people offering to give the guy lessons over skype for free.

Or start dark and sand with a medium/heavy grit before applying a lighter tint coat as you do with natural wood grain to get tiger stripes on maple. Except in this case you'd end up with neon wood chips floating in an inky sea. http://thecommodorerenos.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/staining-and-varnishing-osb-floor.html

This Hondo is for you then Picked both of these stupid things up today for $40 USD. Epiphone electric acoustic with some terrible setup and an "allegedly" MIJ Hondo Fame. Weird non-locking import Floyd Rose setup. The finest tone glue construction. Cracked trem block too on the thick E string. The pickup was sorta held in. This was also on there Pickup has been taped at some point and there was a pair of soldered connections below the pickup that were just hanging out exposed to the base plate. Mostly cleaned off. New jack plate, jack, brass shaft volume pot. Tossed on a spare Gibson pickup ring on, witch hat knob, and drilled the headstock to accept the larger 2pin Fender tuners I had. It's somewhat stable now with 5 springs, but is a complete time bomb with that pot metal broken trem block. The Epiphone will be a good campfire beater to not worry about but has like lol-classical string height. Upper fret access being a bonus.

^^ Kitty, kitty. Nostalgia. It's a powerful thing, but it can sour. Music stores. Once upon a time any decent-sized city had at least three independent stores, each with their own brand buy-ins so you'd go to one place to check out the really fancy stuff, another to check out MESA/Boogie because they were the only store with new models in stock, a third for their used section. Head to the out-of-the-way hole-in-the-wall place out of town out of curiosity, see if you can get a deal on strings or something. The days before online shopping, before Guitar Center, before MARS Music, etc. My teens. Some things have changed, and others probably won't. Yesterday, due to a simple miscommunication, I arrived to a gig two hours early. It was 90 degrees. I needed something to do and remembered that Guitar Center was just 12 miles (on a 70MPH dual-highway) back the way I came, and it would be cool inside. So I headed back and soon I was sitting alone in the recording room reading mixing tips from famous engineers for an hour. I perused the new amps, looked at the hanging guitars, didn't play anything or spend any money. Despite being 2:30pm on a Saturday, there were more employees than browsers. On my way out I stopped by the restroom and found "the board." Everyone knows "the board." It's a place where one might search, almost always in vain, for talented and reliable musicians to form an ensemble. My phone camera didn't get this as well as I'd like, but I think it's mostly legible. Next time you go by your local stores, snap some pics of the best of the worst of the notices. I think some of them are incredibly funny, even if you can't tell if it's tongue-in-cheek or not. I mention nostalgia because; after not stepping foot into a GC for eight years, I figure I can probably wait another ten before I'd feel like going into one again.

pointlessone posted:Good (bad) news! Guitar center might not be here anymore in a good couple years. I was in one that just did a reset, and it's not looking good. All the gear is flat faced in an effort to hide the lack of stock, there's maybe one to two color variants of models, and they were down to about two shelves of amps while all the bass amps just say on the floor in the back corner where the used gear was. The bass "room" was completely gone, all that was there was about 15 traded in guitars and maybe 10 overpriced used amps covered in dust. The physical stores are aimed squarely at newbs. I guarantee their Line6 and Orange section was fully stocked.

Guitar Center staying around is fine by me. Last weekend, I traded in some gear that I haven't used in a while and got a brand new bass amp for my synth. My trade covered the entire thing, and they even had to pay me $5 after all was said and done. That's pretty rad. I've had good experiences with their trade-ins in the past, too. I don't buy much gear from there, though. I got to bring my synth to the store and try out different bass amps before deciding on one, too, so that was neat. It's cool to have a place to do that. Why do people have such a thing against guitar center anyway? You can actually try stuff out there without the staff giving you the stink-eye. Prices are competitive. Most importantly they have an excellent return policy. Without GC I would be stuck with a loving pile of garbage Casino, instead I got to return 3 of them and end up with a Gretsch. Honestly, I would not like to go back to the days of 'small' shops where you pay $10 for a pack of $5 strings.

My general experience was that the salesmen were always incredibly pushy but completely unknowledgeable about the gear they were trying hock. On top of that, they always talked down to me everytime I ever shopped there. It always seemed like their was always some item of the week that they would try to sell you no matter what you actually came in to look for. Never mind the fact that they never had a viable business strategy, and took out several good shops in my area, despite never having actually turned a profit. And any reputable shop would let you return a guitar, but in all honesty after 2 lovely ones you should have given up on Casinos. Did you not play them in the store before you bought them or something? If someone kept coming into my store, buying the same guitar and returning it 3 days later, I would be pretty justifiably pissed. And as far as $10 strings go, there again, any decent shop won't do that, you just need less lovely shops around you.

Where I am they are not pushy, and pretty much anyplace with retail today is going to be a total dice roll if the salespeople will have experience. Over here I don't think they killed any smaller shops, there is literally nothing for ~30 miles anyway. As far as the Casino, they shipped them to the shop, I inspected them and took them home. The whole lovely line of guitars has a defect with awful pickup mounting, and yes I abandoned them. I liked the idea of the guitar so I was hoping there was a well made one, and I even went to NYC where a really good luthier took a look at one. Either way, literally no one ever gave me an ounce of poo poo for doing that and they applied the discount to my next purchase. The 'small' shops I have been to have salespeople who basically seem personally offended if you touch anything in the store with the added bonus of a 40% markup. I am not saying everyone should love the big soulless chain, but they work out well for me.

I'm not saying that Guitar Center sucks. I am saying that I am an old man who would rather have his gums deep-scaled than hang out for more than ten minutes in a "music store" anymore. I've paid my dues, I once thought it was fun and cool; and now I know better. Also, as mentioned above, good luck finding something you want to play before you buy. They do have a great return policy.
