pretty fucking embarrassing to watch

forkboy84 posted:

I sort of have limited sympathy with this view because for years I didn't watch Japanese shows because of the lack of commentary. And having English commentary really helped with letting me know who Goto is and who Ishii is and what they are about so that by the time I got to shows with no commentary or only Japanese commentary and it wasn't a big deal.

But I'm watching a DDT show right now and I'm not a regular DDT viewer so I only know who is who in this tag match because one team has Shinya Aoki on it who I know from MMA and the other has the Masa Takanashi guy I know from Gatoh Move.

So for a dumbo who speaks just one language it's definitely just a bit of familiarity to reduce the intimidation factor a little. I watch Dragon Gate and there can be an awful lot of talking where you are just confused.

But then he uses Stardom as an example and they subtitle the pre-match promos and make it very easy for a new viewer to feel comfortable so loses me there.

I think that's true: but also why English language commentary would only be useful for a limited number of promotions. DDT do some weird stuff so informed commentary might help (or at least cut back on the need to scroll through DDT English Update); Dragon Gate lean into their history a lot and do strange faction stuff so it'd work for them as well. But most Japanese promotions are simple: they tell simple stories with relatively simple characters booked in a sensible way so commentary wouldn't help a great deal. Stardom is a perfect example: every wrestler in Stardom has relatively simple character motivations and the subtitled promos do a great job in conveying it and their stories are mostly told in ring so its relatively obvious to anyone that knows wrestling. The commentary thing also came up for AJPW today and they're the same: simple stories, simple characters, things conveyed more through in-ring storytelling, match results and some physical angles over long promos. Subtitles are always handy; but commentary less so.

I think its because WWE has conditioned a certain group of fans to expect their wrestling to be incredibly complicated and that you need commentary to try and explain it to a sensible level. WWE stories are done through a million promos and anything but in ring and I think that means that people that perhaps aren't used to other forms of wresting and haven't watched wrestling without commentary; they can't get used to it. This isn't helped by people trying to make simple promotions seem more complicated than they are: When people ask "how do I get into Stardom" I still see people recommending starting from the draft which was nine months ago and that's a heck of a backlog to give someone who's not sure if they like a promotion; when for basically every promotion the sensible answer is "start from the next important show; you'll pick it up". Sure the added history between people can add meaning to certain matches but most companies are relatively simple and will explain that if needed; especially Stardom which doesn't really do complicated stories and that's a good thing.

The initial tweet mentioned how following Stardom required "expensive research" and he blocked me when I was like "by extensive research do you mean reading the promos" so its not like this is someone that's open to looking at new ways of doing things.

Tonight was the first night that I think the product would have been better without him. But I was in a really bad mood because of the Nightmare Collective stuff so it might just be me.

It's very fun to watch and they have some of the best strikers in the business. Depends how much you expect to get out of your $10. I generally watch a handful of matches a month but they are all really good. The archive isn't great but should get better.

Take a look at some of the free matches on their YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/user/2010stardom

If you like it, yeah, knock yourself out. It’s a good product for the most part. For a better idea of the pros and cons of STARDOM though, you should come over to the Woman’s Wrestling thread and talk about it there.

There's something happening out here, man. You know something, man? I know something you that you don't know. That's right, Jack. The man is clear in his mind, but his soul is mad. Oh, yeah. He's dying, I think. He hates all this. He hates it! But the man's a... He reads poetry out loud, all right? And a voice... He likes you because you're still alive. He's got plans for you. No, I'm not gonna help you. You're gonna help him, man. You're gonna help him. I mean, what are they gonna say, man, when he's gone? 'Cause he dies when it dies, man! When it dies, he dies! What are they gonna say about him? What? Are they gonna say he was a kind man? He was a wise man? He had plans? He had wisdom? Bullshit, man! And am I gonna be the one that's gonna set them straight? I love how frequently he points out that nobody is "coming at him" and that he can't understand why nobody will debate him on this subject, and mistakes that for people being overwhelmed by his logic and the strength of his position.

New Japan's English commentary has spoiled me, it's excellent, but I do want to branch out someday and get over my fear of watching Japanese promotions without English commentary. It's an incentive to pick up the language, I guess.

I can follow the match fine but when Chris provides extremely helpful context on the wrestlers and the match it really amplifies the product. But my brother showed me a clip of Nagata beating Shibata wherein the Japanese commentator absolutely lost his loving mind at the finish, man I want that kind of raw energy too.

My only regret about watching the English commentary now (which is superb) is that I really do miss the Japanese commentators absolutely losing their loving minds. It was always so great.

I really like rewatching the big NJPW post match angles on Youtube because you get to hear the Japanese team losing their poo poo at say, KENTA stopping the Tokyo Dome roll call, but it's also subtitled so you know what they're saying.

People say this a lot, and I have watched clips and bits and pieces of the JP commentary team doing it, but it's not as if the ENG guys don't freak the gently caress out sometimes as well. The one that jump immediately to mind is Rocky and ELP from BOSJ

I prefer Japanese commentary for New Japan because I've been following them for seven years now so I don't really need context but for something new to me like AJPW/DDT/Stardom it would be nice to have commentary that can give some more context, especially for something like the recent Jake Lee/Kento match where they clearly have history together that's playing into the action.

NJPW's english commentary is very stats heavy, which is nice. Plus you can tell its 3-4 guys that enjoy NJPW wrestling and aren't trying to get themselves over or convince a boss they need a raise.
