He gutted the entire charging division because the head of the program refused to layoff more than 20% of the program because it wasn't gonna work so he fired her and everyone else That's really it, he's just a petty petulant piece of poo poo

The world is gonna become a proper authoritarian dystopia overnight, the moment these ultra-rich dickhead techbros obsessed with 'AI' become victims of fake porn instead of women. Either that or they'll continue to scream "FAKE NEWS!!!!!" while posting very clearly 'AI' generated pictures of young actresses.

It isn't even rich people poo poo now. It's all quite affordable if you look into it.

Same as I used to build PCs from components off the shelf at Fry's, and same as I used to congratulate myself for getting desktop FreeBSD to work. But (and maybe this is just a me thing) at a certain point things become mass-market and polished enough that I don't care about the thrill of the hunt anymore and I don't care if the hood is welded shut, I just want the lights to turn on. And it sucks when the mass-market stuff is garbage.

Honestly X10 worked pretty well, I had X10 dimmers on all my light switches in my first apartment, it was reliable and worked great for dimming the entire house at one. I left all of them when I moved, 20 years ago and have honestly kind of wondered if they ever bothered replacing them of if someone wonders why the light switches are so weird. This was poo poo that RadioShack sold in the 90s, just like today there are lovely setups but if you just wanted to dim a bunch of lights in an open concept home, it worked fine if you spent the money.

It's the same as it always has been, people buy a bunch of lovely cheap WiFi lightbulbs from some random Chinese white box company, link it to their $20 Echo and wonder why it works like poo poo and everyone is mad at them because they can't use the light switches any longer. There is a reason why a Lutron Caseta light switch costs $60 and a Hue lightbulb starts are like $15, they just loving work. Unless you interacted with one of the touchscreens in our house for some reason, you would have no idea that every light and fan in our house can be controlled by voice, app, or touch screen, everything works exactly as you would expect it to and nothing breaks if you touch the wrong switch.

Do all these home device networks require a server? Does everyone have a box whirring away in a closet? My bulbs all just replace regular bulbs and you control them over WiFi with no server. Am I completely missing something here?

Am I completely missing something here? If you want more info, feel free to check out the Home Automation thread: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3635963 But yeah, you're completely missing something there, which is that Home Assistant is an operating system running on something that acts as a hub that connects to various devices from various vendors and allows them to interact in a way that they can't on their own because they're in walled gardens. The app and subscription to Naba Casa is just an easy way to remotely connect to your Home Assistant server when you're not on the same network (among other things). https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/ Think of Samsung's SmartThings, but more community support and wider vendor compatibility, and prioritizes devices running completely locally first.
